Consortium News Editor-in-Chief Joe Lauria presented the 2020 Gary Webb Freedom of the Press Award to WikiLeaks Editor-in-Chief Kristinn Hrafnsson on behalf of Julian Assange after a rally for Assange in Parliament Square in London.
Consortium News has presented the 2020 Gary Webb Freedom of the Press Award to Kristinn Hrafnsson, WikiLeaks editor-in-chief, following a march and rally at Parliament Square in London on Saturday.
The award reads: “For bravery in the face of a grave threat to Freedom of the Press and for journalistic accomplishments in revealing crimes of the state.”
You can watch the presentation here:
Next stop the Nobel Peace Prize.
It would make a change if the prize was given to somebody who had made a real effort to promote peace rather than people like Obama.

Yes, Assange, Manning, and Snowden are already nominated:
“Dear Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee,
“We wish to nominate Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, in honour of their unparalleled contributions to the pursuit of peace, and their immense personal sacrifices to promote peace for all.”
— 17 Members of the German Bundestag, January 31, 2020

Thank you, Julian Assange, you are one of the great heroes of our time. You deserve this award and many others. May you soon walk free among us!
Thank you Consortium News for keeping my father’s name alive and honoring those who deserve it.
I have great respect for your father. He was a REPORTER
Great to hear from you Ian Webb. Your Father will be recognized some day as a major Journalist…
Ian, I am so sorry about what happened to your dad. He did not deserve to be treated so badly and we will always remember his great contributions to noble journalism, not the trash journalism we see today in the mainstream press. I bet you are very, very proud of your father. What a great man.
Ian,
I echo your sentiments, and I would ditto what Cal, Bob and ML wrote.
Thank you for your good work on behalf of Julian Assange.
Please ask the lawyers to hold an emergency bail hearing so Assange does not end up like Webb. Reports from his father indicate that he was harassed in his prison cell before meeting with his father today. That’s quite obviously torture and don’t think the UK can’t do an Epstein if they want to.
Try to get him out now.
Yes, I’m glad you gave this award to him. He certainly earned it.
Julian Assange certainly deserves the award, and we may hope that Parliament acts if the UK judiciary does not, in view of the threat to freedom of the press. I shall despair of the UK if they extradite Mr. Assange against the will of the People.
The UK/US press should be shamed for failure to speak out on this matter about (1) the legality of the secrets, (2) the constitutional imperative that wars be only defensive, and started only by Congress, (3) the collapse of safeguards against excessive surveillance, (4) the takeover of mass media by money power and secret agencies, (5) the loss of democracy to money power. Let us hope that future crises reveal the truth to a People unhappy enough to dump mass media for the alternatives, enough to start thinking about domestic issues if not foreign policy.
I tend not to describe people as hero’s but Gary Webb and Robert Parry come as close as anyone.
Assange has been burning on a stake as a result of inhumane acts by authoritarian political monsters.
Assange and Manning should be freed, immediately. And Snowden should be hailed a hero.
I have began to wonder, is it possible that Vladimir Putin might be more humane than Donald Trump and his cult zombies.
Thanks, CN!
CN also deserves prize for Best Independent Journalism!
Absolutely
Thank you Joe Lauria, thank you Kristinn Hraffnson for what you are doing for Julian Assange.
