Will Ferrell returned to his familiar role last weekend as George W. Bush on Saturday Night Live, doing a bit on the recent news that the 43rd US president is now enjoying soaring popularity among Democrats.
It was a funny bit, I guess. Ferrell reminded the SNL audience how “historically not good” Dubya was, joked about thrown shoes and how Dick Cheney’s heart is made of Legos now, and of course snuck in the obligatory comment about Russia rigging America’s elections as though that’s a real thing.
The majority of the skit was built around a refrain you’re hearing more and more from Democratic pundits who haven’t quite lost their minds yet, reminding viewers that as bad as Trump is, he still hasn’t done anything remotely as bad as Bush’s full-scale ground invasions of nations where US troops are still involved.
Anyone with even a drop of self-awareness knows that the cuddly wuddly new image Dubya is enjoying in mainstream America is taking Trump hysteria a bridge too far. Even MSNBC stooge Chris Hayes said not long ago that “The Iraq War was worse than anything Donald Trump has done (so far).”
Yeah, they like to say that. What they never, ever like to do is acknowledge the far more uncomfortable fact that as bad as Trump is, he also still hasn’t done anything as bad as what the Obama administration did to Libya.
It’s true, though. For all the many, many, many evil things that this administration is guilty of, none of them come anywhere close to the destruction of an entire nation killing tens of thousands of people and creating a failed state where people are now sold as slaves. The destruction of Libya and attempted destruction of Syria that the Obama administration is guilty of have caused far more death and suffering than Trump has at this point in the game.
So I don’t think it’s accurate to suggest, as Ferrell’s Dubya character does, that Bush’s newfound popularity among Democrats is due solely to comparisons between the current Republican president and the last one. It’s impossible to hold Bush as the horribly evil butcher that he unquestionably was while cheering on his successor for eight years who only continued and expanded those same bloodthirsty agendas. In order to support Obama, you necessarily had to compartmentalize away from the horrors of the Bush administration.
But I think there’s an even more important factor at play here, and it’s this: Democrats spent 2016 gaslighting themselves into believing that a warmongering neocon who supported the Iraq invasion would make a fantastic president.
Time and time again in the lead-up to the 2016 primary and general elections I debated Hillary Clinton supporters from the perspective that her support for the Iraq invasion utterly disqualified her for the role of Commander-in-Chief of the most powerful military force in the history of civilization. And they argued right back, often on the grounds that the Iraq invasion wasn’t as bad as I was making it out to be.
Conversations and debates like this would have been happening all across the country that entire year, and Clinton supporters on that side of the debate would have to have found a way to contort their sense of reality into making Bush’s barbarism seem understandable and acceptable. They had to psych themselves into supporting their candidate.
The more rank-and-file Democrats have been forced to find a way to get okay with the idea of warmongering neocon presidents, the more they’re going to get okay with Bush.
And this is why members of the so-called “Resistance” would rather spend time drawing pictures of Robert Mueller riding on a shark than on trying to curb Trump’s Orwellian surveillance powers and unconstitutional war powers: those are Bush’s policies, and Democrats have been forced to gaslight themselves into falling in love with Bush.
Democrats are Bush now. Everything they once opposed they have now been manipulated into supporting, and the smiling, blood-soaked face of establishment politics is allowed to lull us all deeper and deeper into insanity.
Wake up. For God’s sake, wake up.

This site is a perfect vehicle for your unbought, unsold, clear-minded analyses of the American political scene — as this piece so clearly demonstrates. Your followup article on Bernie Sanders’ Russiagate promotion is also a much needed criticism, but I hope you will try to keep the level of your discourse closer to this one. Off-color language, when engaged in too heavily, may increase the entertainment value of an essay, but imo it weakens the arguments and alienates some readers.
You have the writing chops to say what you want to say, and say it beautifully, without a heavy reliance on profanity.

The one thing the Democrats seem not to hate Trump for, even to applaud, is when he speaks of our list of enemy nations and how we must be strong militarily to confront their evil intentions and doings. Watching the Trump State of the Union address on most matters the Democrats sat unmoving and stoney-faced with occasional smirks, but when the flag was waved and Iran, Russia etc was mentioned, they were on their feet. It was at that point I stopped watching Il Duce and maybe I missed moments when they didn’t cheer Trump’s bellicose remarks about our “enemies”. but I doubt it.
As the Ms. Johnstone notes, Trump is following the same script of as Bush and Obama (reallysince the end of World War II) and elevating Bush is just a way of covering their own behinds while taking yet another swipe at Trump.
To be fair ,Trump did try to work with Russia and not have WW3 as Hillary planned.
Remember Gen Flynn?…….what was his crime?……talking to Russia.

Nary a peep,except in Febuary 2003 when millions protested across the world, in more than 600 cities against the Iraq war, which hadn’t even started yet. many of them were Americans-I would guess 250k in Washington DC based alone simply on my personal estimate-and that was after an “electrical glitch” caused trains serving routes between the north east and DC mysteriously stopped running that day. It was the biggest anti war protest history had ever seen,despite the press failing for the most part to mention it.
I think people would peep all the time but the people who run the asylum are very good at presenting the illusion that those potential (and actual) peepers are more alone and isolated than they actually are. I often reflect on whether protest in the street could ever be as effective as if the mass of people who believe war is wrong would simply refuse to buy or pay for anything for a period of time….or fail to file their taxes, or suddenly take 30 withholdings on their W2.

You’re right–his “blackness” was his biggest asset. It allowed him to literally get away with murder and still be loved and revered by stupid liberals. They overlook the fact that he is half white and certainly represented (rich) white interests far more than black.
In a real world of diversification and equality, the race of any president shouldn’t matter. If this were held to it’s objective of all things being equal, where race, ethnicity, and religious beliefs, were not the deciding factors of any decision made, then why would it matter to be critical of a president no matter what their origins? Plus, if you strive to be the boss, then you need to develop the wherewithal to take the heat.
I don’t think Obama would mind the criticism so much, but his supporters being what they are, are another thing to deal with. Funny, if you only liked Obama for his being black, then what does that make you? I understand Black people loving him, as he is the first Black American President, but seriously shouldn’t our expectations be based more upon the quality of their proposed policies, or should we grade them on skin color and hair cuts? You tell me, because I just want an honest and good president, plus I want the whole of DC to wake up and take care of the people who put them all there.

I’m glad to see Caitlin Johnstone joining the Consortiumnews list of published authors. It is, as she indicates, profoundly disappointing to see Sanders swallow the Russiagate kool-aid. It is obvious to anybody not fully relying on the power structure’s media for information that the story is a total fraud, and it is disappointing that Sanders would be taken in. Anybody blindly accepting this story has jumped the shark and is following policies which are a threat to our survival.

I totally agree that Trump has done far fewer dives into the deep end of militaristic adventures than Hillary would have dived into. You have to be a little bit cautious about a candidate on a mission to obliterate our enemies or our perceived enemies or some folks that the deep state just declared as our enemies like the Russians. After all this is a woman who had Al Qaeda staff members in her employment. In fact whole families of them.

Everything in modern day American politics is built upon the commercial entertainment business models way of promoting, and protecting a star. A bad PR incident is handled with clever surgical care, as there is a process on how to recover your celebrity status, after a hot scandal. Now, I’m not sure how this works, but also in modern day America we know all about this business, because of the show ‘Scandal’ which is about the real life scandal recovery artist Judy Smith. Again I stress there even is a process for when a high ranking person screws up.
But while I’m sneaking a powered sugar donut and feeling guilty about it, only to look up at the kitchen tv screen to see George W Bush being all warm and cuddly with comedian Ellen DeGeneres, and before I smile I ponder to myself why ain’t this guy in jail, only reminds me once again to what an unaccountable world it is we live in.
The Clinton’s have to hold somekind of record for their scandal record. The Obama years are littered with distracting speeches, only to hide the nasty deed. This seems reasonable to me as a partial explanation. Another factor is that GWB is now “old news”. Lots of us tend to focus on “now” to the exclusion of things past.
Finally, I’m rather doubtful about those poll numbers. In the first place, the polling company was founded by some conservative types. In the second, not only must we accept that Democrats now embrace Dumbya at the rate of 14% + 37%, but Black American support for the bastard is now 13% + 33%. In the case of the Blacks, that’s a jump of 14% since 2003. Even odder was how the 2003 Hispanic Love of the Codpiece Commander (67%) took a dive of 27% to 15% + 35%. It’s just hard to understand why post-Katrina Blacks and Hispanics had such substantial changes in their attitudes.

The growing “popularity” of Gerge W. amongst Democrats merely reflects the DEMOCRATS’ love of INITIATING endless wars.
Saddam Hussein’s Iraq of 2003 neither posed nor voiced a threat to the United States. Iraq was dramatically weakened by the Gulf War and another decade of intermittent bombings plus sanctions and was effectively under the “control” of no-fly zones in the north and south. Weapons inspectors established the fact that even if Saddam had wanted to bite, he was toothless. And Iraq played absolutely no part in the crimes of 9/11.
How does one rationalize the destruction of civil infrastructure, shocking and aweing the hell out of a nation’s densely populated capital, and the disestablishment of a nation’s legal and political frameworks in order to privatize resources and set up contracts that redound to foreigners rather than citizens? How does one rationalize the use of depleted uranium and the kicking in of doors, and arbitrary detention, and militarized occupation and Fallujah–my God Fallujah! And all these years later Mosul–my God Mosul!
How does one rationalize fostering sectarian divides (you know Condi) through terrorist incitements to further the chaos and “justify” more war (surge away Petraeus)– and then using the “failed state” (in conjunction with a similar fate for Libya) to mount a dirty war of terror on the people of Syria?
It can’t be rationalized–it is beyond reproach and stinks to high heaven. Bush, Cheney, Obama, Clinton, Biden, Kerry, Republican, Democrat, conservative, liberal, neocon, neoliberal–I don’t care what face or name you put upon it, it’s dead wrong. Let’s not contort reality in order to play partisan politics in the good ole usa. Face up to it Democrats–when push comes to shove turns out you have become “Bush”– just like Caitlin says.

The onset of the Obama administration coincided with the release of brain-shrinking toxins into the nation’s drinking water supply. Or with the introduction of a secret program using cel phones to release brain-shrinking vapours. I’m not sure which, or know if either actually happened – but how else to explain the disintegration of critical thinking skills amongst so many otherwise intelligent progressive-leaning persons?
Most people just want things to return to being “normal”, but there has been no normal since the Supreme Court put W in the White House 17 long years ago. “Normal” is not coming back either, one reason why critical thinking skills are vital in this moment. Avoid the MSM.
Good advice. Particularly, those outlets the supposedly educated, liberal class likes to point to, such as PBS, NPR, the New York Times and the Washington Post. They are muddling people’s minds every day to the point where it’s almost impossible to have a rational conversation with many of them.

Oh, so true, and I’ve seen it first hand. I’ve seen democrats, even before Trump was elected, excuse Bush by saying there were weapons of mass destruction and the reason we couldn’t find them was Saddam got them out of the country before they could be found. Educated people rewriting such recent history in their heads was at first surprising, but no more, and the argument that he wasn’t the horror he was is indeed a way of justifying Obama and Clinton’s militarism. It makes perfect sense.

Really not so much truth as an opinion. Truth comes with citations and links. Sure we get a single poll…but didn’t all kinds of polls all tell us Hillary would be the first women president? I get around some and I really don’t know anyone who has decided to give Bush a pass on Iraq,even now that Trumpkin is president.
