Worldwide Human Rights Day Rallies for Assange

Rallies for Julian Assange in front of British embassies and consulates from Rome to New York and other cities around the world will be held on Saturday, Human Rights Day.

Supporters of imprisoned WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange are using the occasion of Human Rights Day this Saturday to demand that the British government refuse to extradite him to the United States. 

A rally organized by NYC Free Assange and Assange Countdown to Freedom is planned for 1 pm EST in front of the British consulate and U.N. mission at Second Avenue, between 47th and 48th Streets in New York. Among the speakers will be rock legend Roger Waters; comic and activist Randy Credico; radio host Garland Nixon; lawyer Margaret Kuntsler; Ben Cohen, activist of Ben & Jerry’s; journalist Max Blumenthal and CN Editor Joe Lauria. 

Assange is waiting on his application for appeal before the High Court of England and Wales against the home secretary’s decision to send him to the U.S. where he faces 175 years in prison for publishing truthful information about U.S. crimes and corruption. 

Supporters will gather in London on Saturday for a vigil at 2 pm GMT  in front of high-security Belmarsh Prison, where Assange has been languishing for nearly four years on remand.

A rally will take place in Washington in front of the British Embassy from 1 to 3 pm EST at 3100 Massachusetts Ave. NW. 

In Sydney, Australia, supporters will come together in front of the office of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at 334a Marrickville Rd.

Actions in the U.S. are also taking place in Boston,  Seattle and Denver.  In Seattle at Greenlake by Boathouse at 2 pm. Supporters will gather in the Boston area at the British Consulate (Galaxy Park), Main & 3rd Streets, in Cambridge, from 4 to 5 pm.

A rally beginning at 10 am in Toronto will be held opposite the U.S. Consulate, 360 University Ave. In Wellington, New Zealand, people will gather at Cuba/Left Bank at 3 pm. In Rio, Brazil at the U.S. Consulate, 12 noon on Av. Pres. Wilson, 147.  For other venues click here.
