A People’s War in East Ukraine

Ukraine’s Western-backed coup regime in Kiev has launched an offensive against ethnic Russians in the east while a pro-regime mob used fire to kill some 31 anti-regime protesters in Odessa. Virtually all U.S. pundits favor the coup regime, but Daniel Patrick Welch offers a different view of the conflict

By Daniel Patrick Welch

As the fog of war descends on Ukraine, it is important to shout a few main points from the rooftops before they get lost in the details. A coup-appointed junta in Kiev, designed, engineered and controlled from Washington, has begun a massive armed assault on its citizens in the east.

This war crime is no longer in doubt. Nor can there be any more doubt about who is pulling the strings. The illegitimate junta has done what its International Monetary Fund masters demanded it do just the other day. Pointedly and tellingly the Washington-based IMF, the mafia enforcer of western capital, issued a statement saying that the crushing austerity agreement — already a death sentence for many Ukrainians living at subsistence levels — might have to be “revised” if the chosen cabal in Kiev could not control the rebellious and resource-rich eastern regions, the grand prize in the whole “democracy” charade.

The junta, using a rump military and fascist shock troops, has dutifully complied, a shameful and disgusting moment in world history. It is also, however, a moment that I think will be transformative in ways we can’t even yet understand.

For a moment, I was afraid that in a fully militarized phase the resistance would be less able to access its chief asset — the people. When war breaks out, soldiers are not forced to confront the humanity of their opponents, and we would no longer see scenes like cordons of ordinary people trying to stop tanks with their bare hands. I was wrong again, I fully admit. The struggle, like life, teaches me something new every day. The people’s resilience is love itself, and I am in awe of their courage; I wake up every morning glad to be alive because I’m glad they are still alive.

And a giant middle finger to the “peace” community in the West, these apologists of the war machine, and especially liberals and elements of the First-World Left who are always the last to see that their purist intellectual detachment is always — always — suspiciously close to empire’s agenda, who watch (and cheerlead!) while the U.S. and its proxies slaughter innocents and thwart the will of the people from Afghanistan to Zaporizhia, a city in southeastern Ukraine.

The United Nations has exposed itself as an eager and unabashed tool of western supremacy and apologist for the crimes of empire. It will be discarded along with the other detritus of the old world as UNjust,  UNequal and UNwilling to break the yoke of the western paradigm. I think the organization is much worse than useless.

I actually think this conflict in Ukraine is the death knell for the UN, along with the IMF/EU/NATO and all the other western organizations which act in concert to try to force billions of people to believe that 2 + 2 = 5. They are the problem, and they have no solutions. As it should be — for as Eduardo Galleano gently reminded us, “it would be strange if the remedy should come from the United States, the same place which brings us the disease.”

Amid the lies and distortions of a bought-and-sold press and a government propaganda machine, we can still cut through the bullshit and see the hustlers for what they are: pitchmen of a war machine hell bent on selling us more death and destruction. We all have it within us to refuse the pitch.

Each of us has the ability to grasp a Michael Corleone moment, in that scene from “The Godfather” in Havana in 1959, when he knew instinctively that he was right and Hyman Roth was wrong. Though no fan of the revolution, he saw that it was a bad investment when Castro’s revolutionaries would rather kill themselves than be captured.

The current crisis presents many such opportunities, not the least of which are those stories and images of people stopping tanks with their own bodies. One moment of particular clarity for me came in an absolutely stunning interview by Graham Phillips of a man on the street in Kramatorsk, who condensed what it’s all about for the people of East Ukraine in two and a half minutes. Eloquent, impassioned and clear, it still brings a lump to my throat.

“Furthermore, the Banderites who have now come here and want to impose their ideology on us have given us a precious gift because they have awakened for us in East Ukraine our patriotism, which had been dormant for many years.” (“Banderites” is a name for the neo-Nazi militants who spearheaded the Feb. 22 coup which ousted Ukraine’s elected President Viktor Yanukovych. They are proud followers of Stepan Bandera, who led Ukrainian forces in World War II that collaborated with the Nazis in the extermination of Jews and Poles in pursuit of a racially pure Ukraine. The Banderites are contemptuous of the ethnic Russians of eastern Ukraine whom they considered inferior, if not sub-human.)

The man continued: “This happened because people [in East Ukraine] had forgotten more or less who they used to be, who they had become. The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 led to a kind of depression. People saw this event, the collapse of the Soviet Union, as a kind of natural disaster. The Soviet Union fell apart, and the rain came. People didn’t understand what had happened — they were demoralized, they used to believe in their leaders.

“Now people understand that it is not necessary to believe in leaders. We don’t need to believe in any Yanukovich, we don’t need to believe in a Party of Regions. We need to organize ourselves by ourselves– and to remember our own history, remember our own culture. That is our foundation.

“So thank you to all the Banderites who have come into Kiev, and who have made people remember who they are, who they are in the world, and above all why they are here on this earth.”

Filter this in among the ludicrous and increasingly obvious slanders about “pro-Russian separatists,” “pro-Russian Russians” and other ill-fitting and deliberately vilifying terms to synch up with the ginned-up Russophobia now polluting virtually all western airwaves. One might consider the similarly bizarre yet more honest term “pro-self selves,” or “pro-self humans.” Or simply, “People who object to being killed.”

As the helicopters and missiles start flying, you can feel the desperation of a people under attack, as in this more pointed “Letter from East Ukraine,” from those whose grandparents fought and died to defeat fascism:

“Each Banderite scum, each rat of the National Guard and other gangs must know this: you came to our land with weapons! You’ve come to kill us in our land! So don’t expect any mercy from us! You will find only grim death! Because you have not yet tasted Slavic-Russian anger! But it will overwhelm you in a severe, violent flame! Do you think we are afraid? We, Russians in the South-East afraid? You are very, very deeply mistaken. And not many of you will be able to understand, as few of you will get to return from the South-East.

“So ask your parents, wives, sisters, from the heart to prepare coffins for their husbands, sons and brothers. Or at least a place in the cemetery, as most of the bodies may be hard to find.

“We have nowhere to retreat and we are Russians, though for a while yet with Ukrainian passports. We are Russians, who never give up! We will defend ourselves to the last bullet, the last grenade, to our last breath! And if we die, we die for the glory of the Russian land! We will never be under the Banderite fascist scum!

“Brothers, Slavs, Russians, if we perish, avenge us. Death to fascism!”

Even more astonishing, beyond geography and cultural ties, an experiment in western Ukraine is quite eye-opening. Ukrainian TV in the central-western town of Zhytomir sent Maidan activists posing as armed southeastern rebels (opposed to the Kiev regime) to the town center of Zhytomir asking for directions. The pretend rebels were apparently quite surprised that local residents willingly helped them, even giving details on how to avoid police checkpoints. Then, armed, they stood for a time by the local police station, and no one paid them any attention.

In other words, the mask is off, and the junta is done. Massive, suppressive violence is the only way for the western puppet junta to maintain power. They will kill a good number of people, but their deaths will be avenged, and the world will be transformed. It is an amazing moment.

I often dig into my repertoire of Irish Republican songs, a wellspring of sentiment that defines moments like these, encapsulating the often vulgar determination of a people with their backs to the wall:

Go on home, British soldiers, go on home
Have you got no fucking homes of your own?
For eight hundred years we have fought you without fear
And we’ll fight you for eight hundred more

A new world is arising right before our eyes, and those who still don’t see it will be consigned to the dustbin of history. Are you ready? Do you hear the people sing? The heroic people of southeast Ukraine are taking a stand for us all, on behalf of the peoples of the world and against the sick and sorry world the Washington consensus wants to sell us.

It is developing and unfolding now, and we can’t quite predict its course. We do, however, have the power to choose whether we want to be on the right side of history. In the words of the old gospel spiritual:

Get on board, little children
Get on board, little children
Get on board, little children
The ark is a gonna move!

It is so amusing when foreigners argue on a quantitative ratio of Russians and Ukrainians in the Southeast of Ukraine, on a dialect, on Russian… And so I will tell you that we had no special distributions, everyone lived as lived… until rigid promotion of Ukrainians against Russians began.
Now the most part of people in Ukraine wants one, unity and the peace sky over the head, only they can’t agree among themselves. And without unity it is impossible to reject pressure of the self-proclaimed power of Kiev.

I’m from Russia. I’m glad to see so many freely conceiving english speakers here. I tell over all russians and think that it’s an opinion of the majority: russia no one occupied – it’s true. And Putin don’t want war anywhere – it’s true too. Our history teach us to bee strong, we almost forgot about it – and it’s all right – only what we always want – it’s a peace. But seems for peace in whole world, we must fight again and again.

And this is you call journalism? No facts, no analythis, some reference to Don Carleone and Internet info. Opinionated (which journalism is not supposed to be) and emotions driven.

I am deeply saddened with violence in Ukraine and hope the conflict will be soon resolved. But I believe the words nacism and fascism are overused and exploited in this situation. I am trying to keep up with news (in Russian, Ukrainian and English) from both sides and figure out what is really going on. This piece of writing is very much distorted.

Read your article. Read the news that Putin was invited to the celebration of the anniversary of the landing of Allied troops in Normandy (the opening of the Second Front) … and was born “bad joke” – but do not mention whether this event was “a friendly tank mileage of the world” and with the former allies celebrate, right on the hot, from the bright sun Norman, tank armor … The historical process is not possible to reverse – slow down, yes, but to turn – no! There are people who believe that it is possible – we see it all over the recent period, especially after the corporation crossed national borders. It had to happen – it’s the same historical process. But the consciousness of these people has not changed – they did not take into account the new realities of life. And if they become, only that their it personally does not concern them, “or anything personal.” But the fruit of the tree of their illusions the rest of us reap. Will do this for a long time. That “do not pull the cat’s tail” – these people in a beautiful country America to overcome internal crisis needs a “war” where and how it is not important, the main thing – now and not on the mainland, probably so as not to spoil the view from the window ! And she does not want competition. This “original” interpretation of the economic theory of competition! In the Ukrainian crisis only win THESE! More will be no winners! As African-American president of this country, unless you want to be once again to substitute someone as these people are doing now with President Abama, but was also a Clinton, but remember Abama be “on.” While the power of money is not “pervert” people’s consciousness towards universal values, not on paper, but in practice. It is a long process. And we do not last forever, unlike the collective human memory. Of course, if hey this is not periodically remind you – the things that must be remembered always. Everything. Of the historical process that can not be changed. And that happiness around the world is not worth a tear not cheek child (not my phrase). Thank you.

It is not about nationality: Ukrainian or Russian. It is about fascism. Thank God US do not know anything about fascism. But Europe do know what it is. And the former U.S.S.R. countries know. And maybe better than any other peoples in the world. It is really strange Europe follow the US in their rethoric. I always wonder what kind of lever of pressure the US use on Europe. What is their secret ‘weapon’. Why Europe is so blind and submit to the US propaganda, though rather unwillingly. We, on this side of the Atlantic seem so perfectly disconnected with the US. Why Europe follow and support the US interests and obstruct Russia, their closest neighbour. What kind of interest US may have in this part of the world at all??? Only military bases and world supremacy. So tired of this ‘big brother’ attitude and their constantly being ‘on the watch’. It would be OK, if it only were the ‘watch’. But they act: disturb, quarrel, throw together, they preach and lie. Who are they (meaning the US) to tell the other what to do. Feeling of superiority fosters fascism. US are supporting fascism in Ukraine with the tacit approval of Europe. How difficult it must be for Frau Merkel to balance between the interests of her own country and the orders from Washington, swim between two waters. What she said the other day about sanctions? Something about that this burden must be distributed evently between all European countries. Germany supplies to Russia VW’s and BMW’s, and say, the Netherlands supply fruit and vegetable. So let the sanction be that Germany stops supplying to Russia fruit and vegetable, and Netherlands, automobiles. Isn’t it funny?

Some time ago I was under the impression that people in the West are totally misled or deceived or zombied – as you like, but this article, for one, shows I was – luckily – wrong. I wonder how much the team of ConsortiumNews can do to influence awareness of americans and others about what’s happening in the Ukraine, Syria and so on? The picture the official US media draw is so totally different and make me think they are scums. I understand they do what they are told to do, though there may be some people among them who don’t care a fig about democracy, human rights and so on, especially when it comes to some distant land, and they have some sort of other values like ‘some are more equal than other’. Still, these are a minority, I guess. So we must somehow educate those normal people who a misled. This portal is a good tool for this, though reading comments I gather there are not so many american making posts here.

Simon, zombying is taking place, I would imagine, almost anywhere nowadays. Just like you, I was overjoyed at finding like-minded people across the ocean, and I believe that we should unite our efforts in making this a more just world. Let’s spread the word as far and wide as we are only capable of, and, may be, share resources which unite people maintaining views similar to ours. Our, let’s say, opponents are united, and they are trans-national in nature, time has come for us to unite as well, I reckon.

This is the way Mr D. P. Welch sees the conflict. I, nonetheless, believe no people in the world are to “sheeply” accept what an insane “giant” decides to impose on them. Ukraine has the right to dream of being free and fighting for this dream. This means no other nation (including the US) is entitled to interfere with Ukraine’s destiny.

    • Sorru de Ternalpa
      May 11, 2014 at 23:37

I agree with Rogerio, but in a different sense. “No one should accept what an insane “giant” decides to impose on you.” Yes. Particularly when every time the giant gives a reason to support one side within your country, either native or created, but always lavishly funded by the giant, the reason is later discovered to be a lie. Since 1898, at the very least, every US American intervention abroad has been following the exclusive interest of the US, and all and every one of them have been grounded on lies to dupe the US American people into a war that serves only the US American ruling cliques. Has anyone seen the so vaunted 8,000 corpses of Srebrenica yet? No. Has anyone seen the WMD in Iraq yet? No. Has anyone witnessed a clearly defined attack of the Syrian government against its own people yet? No. Because none of these actually existed, not in the way they were presented at least. Once the confrontation in Ukraine wins, and if (and this is a hard if to believe in) the Ukrainian people are crushed by the Quisling group that took power under US and EU auspices, nobody will see the “freedom lovers” in power. What we shall see there is Neo Nazis deciding over the fate of the whole country, which hates them to the guts but is fearing for its life, except in South Eastern Ukraine. Ukraine has every right to be free from the impositions by others. And the ones who impose things on the Ukrainians are not the Russians, in fact. On the contrary, they kept (up to now, and this has been too long) feeding gas to the country which spits on Russia, and they had offered that country a financial settlement that would have set it free from the IMF. Is that an imposition? Shame on those who prefer to believe the lies of the US of America. As a Latin American I know them too well. The lies and the consequences of the lies.

I never cease to be amazed at the naiveté of the American cloudcuckooland! Kramatorsk is a city of 173 000 people, 70% of whom are Ukrainian and 26% Russian. What are the chances that anybody speaks English as perfectly as in the “letter”? Ditto for this Graham Phillips that I’ve never heard of. How likely is it that he would find someone who spoke such perfect English in such a remote place? And since the Ukrainians are in a substantial majority in Kramatorsk, claiming that the Ukrainian forces are some sort of foreign army invading mainly Russian-inhabited territory is just silly. Thus, the Russian presence in eastern Ukraine is in fact the result of colonisation and may be compared to the Plantation of Ulster.

    • Rynex
      May 4, 2014 at 16:32

Ukrainians in the east are Russian-speakers and do not want to be forced to speak in western Ukrainian dialect only. But the most important they do not want the government supporting fascists who their grandfathers were fighting against during WW2. As for the language – did you hear of translators at all?
And who should speak of colonisation here? Brits or Americans may be???

For Russian and Ukrainians no difference what nationality people. Before the Kiev Junta they all lived in harmony. Also in the passport nationality often posed by place of birth . But it was never a factor for some hostility or some exaltation nationality .. I was born in Ukraine , but after the collapse of the Soviet Union live in Russia . All my relatives live in Ukraine. Among them Ukrainians and Russian . All of them against Kiev Junta . Are you surprised that Kramators’k called Russian city. Probably due to traditions . Because the major cities of eastern Ukraine were built Russian government in the 1700s . Regardless of nationality when registering obtained a passport in the areas of these cities have survived Russian tradition.
I am glad that in America there are highly moral people who understand what’s really going on.

As the Ukrainian, I can explain to you, than Ukrainian differs from Russian. Approximately, as the American language from the Australian language. Genetically, externally, Russians and Ukrainians it is one people. I know, you have a bad education. Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, is mother of the cities of Russians, there is such old proverb. The Slavs living in the territory of Kievan Rus’, became ancestors of Russians and Ukrainians. Ukrainians, it is artificial the nation thought up by the Austrians.

“remote place”? Who do you think you are? A God? Do you really think that people who live far from you are all monkeys? As for language: English is a compulsory subject in Ukraine. Of course not everybody knows it well, but at least in every school or university (yes, yes, not only you but they also have schools) you’ll find a number of fluent speakers of English.

    Thank you Daniel.

For those interested in actual footage from South-East of Ukraine as well as from Syria, you’re welcome here: http://www.youtube.com/user/newsanna/playlists?view=1&shelf_id=1&sort=dd — most Syrian videos come with English subtitles (have to catch up with the latest ones though), and I would accept help with preparing subs for Ukrainian footage too — it suddenly turned out to be unbearable for me, a Russian who’s lived most of his life in Kiev…

Here is another video (very poor quality, didn’t take the cam with me for a reason) that I have filmed on February 18, 2013: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUPNZDnvbSg

In Odessa, killing about 46 people. Approximately 30% of the dead have bullet wounds. When these people burned alive, they tried to leave the building through the windows. Fired on them. Government forces fired. Members of the Government of Ukraine received a standing ovation.
In Syria, the U.S. supplied weapons cannibals. In Ukraine, the United States supported the Nazis. U.S. = Fascism?

Were is no an analytic, really. Author just declare: Western world must die, because it is bad. I agree it is bad, but what will come instead? Muslim world? Russian world?
I could guess author is’t familiar enough with the alternatives.

The US-NATO-IMF alliance will always use fascist shock troops to achieve their goals, at any cost really. The fascist-in-practice shock troops of Islamic jihadists are used this way by “The West”. This has been true throughout Latin America, Africa, and Europe as well, now and historically.

Thank you for your position and objectivity. I look Russian and Ukrainian news – these are two different realities. It is a pity that there is no foreign journalists freedom of speech in Russia. Yes, you do not seem) We have a public, independent and even opposition TV channels. Civil war had a crazy policy, and simple people of Russia, Ukraine, Europe and the United States are affected.

What depth should reach the mountain of despair , pain, hatred, fear and indifference to the lives of others , strangers, faceless people , for all who see them flour and pain?
Where it is, what makes animals us humans ?
How should be the other great despair of flesh and blood , loving and dreaming , have children in the throes of agony and then lulls them burned , torn and riddled bodies with knives ?
We are all children to their mothers , all.
Chapel where indifference and the first stab of pain in someone else’s life , the pain and fear of women, children , old and young ?
And I ‘ll tell you all the truth. With each demand and each measure, as well as his legacy .
How many people should eat and how much to corrupt and deaden Moloch , push on momentary recklessness in restless confusion and horror hidden ?
      Do not succumb .
You answer , only you and your flesh and blood. Which animals and crave the Pentagona.
Do not be stupid and overcome .
