Winning a Battle Over Control of Our Site

Three days after a massive attack on Consortium News we are back online after winning the battle. But this is a war.

Consortium News has defeated an attack on America’s oldest independent news site. For now.

After being completely taken over for nearly 72 hours, CN was able to wrest back control of our site from the attackers and resume our ability to publish again.

Our victory was just one battle in an escalating war against a free press, however, which has included recent arrests, interrogations and home raids against journalists both in Britain and the U.S.

Now that we are back online we are focusing on trying to uncover who did this to us. Unfortunately we think we know why. Someone was so upset with what we write and say that they committed a crime to try to stop us.

We thank all of our readers and viewers for their patience while we were taken over and for their continued support.

The corporate press is continuously demonstrating that they work for enemies of America. For example, the PBS “Newshour” has recently had two “reports” on Elon Musk and X/Twiter. Neither said one word about the massive censorship operation at Twitter being run by the FBI. (This included censorship directed by the Ukraine government, who maintains a kill list containing American reporters.) They made no mention of Musk ending this government-directed censorship.

Instead they made ominous insinuations that Musk was sowing misinformation damaging to America! The PBS “Newshour” is a fully censored, fully controlled tentacle of the unseen empire of finance that has infiltrated and captured our government and corporate media. They are brazenly deceiving their viewers, betraying journalism and the Bill of Rights, and sabotaging democracy.

I talked with a guy who checked both MSNBC and ABC and believed he was doing due diligence. I explained the problem and told him about Consortium News.

You were very supportive of Julian Assange through the hardest times of his life. Perhaps he might have some ideas on how to locate the entity/ies who did this.

Doesn’t this put into perspective the hypocrisy involved in cries about democracy being threatened.
Given the media’s similar adherence to Germany’s adherence to an approved line of thought, the hypocrisy is now getting deeper and deeper.

    Hello,

it’s very good to know that you are in the process of regaining control of your website. We still have very limited access, but hope that it will soon be fully restored. Some parts of the website we can see are old, and with others we only get the blank page. But we can (today, 1.11.24) see the Commentary section and also the Israel section.

All good wishes for the future from Wales

Like all your readers, I’m glad you’re back. But is there some reason why you won’t tell us what happened??? You say it was a battle. A battle with who? I have questions about what apparently happened; why are you so coy about it that you won’t tell us who did it and why?

    • Consortiumnews.com
      November 1, 2024 at 12:03

Because we don’t know yet who did it and we may never know. We are investigating. Whoever it is, is at war with us and we won this first battle.

Great to see you in email. However, I am still unable to access CN site via Google, DuckDuckGo, or even YANDEX (although YANDEX worked a few days ago). I fervently hope this can be remedied. Fortunately, CN articles I had linked to in written pieces show up again after being blocked. Whew! Someone needs to inform Antiwar.com that CN is not (completely) back up. btw: According to Nafeez Ahmed, Dem party honchos were intimately involved in the founding of Google. Rooting for CN in every way I can.

I first started reading CN during the year prior to the invasion of Iraq. At the time the narrative from the MSM and government seemed phony, and I was desperate for better information. I came across CN, as well as Lobelog, Antiwar.com, Electronic Intifada and a few others. They did not help maintain the facade but looked behind it to provide much needed reality. 20 years later they still fulfill that role and are still under attack. So glad to see the site back.

All dictatorships begin by outlawing & criminalising speech. First they come for the journalists. Look what is happening! In Australia they are very close to passing a new law to silence debate” Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2024 [Provisions]” hxxps://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/Senate/Environment_and_Communications/MisandDisinfobill
Not about silencing “Misinformation” at all, it is about silencing truth & debate.
    _____
Another little doozie is Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth)
    What does the law say?
Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act makes it unlawful for someone to do an act that is reasonably likely to “offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate” someone because of their race or ethnicity.

A very famous Australian Journalist Mary Kostakidis (SBS News anchor for 20yrs) is currently defending herself from this Gov funded monster & its process due to a complaint by The Zionist Federation of Australia for writing a Journalistic article re the Gazza/Israel situation.
Might send her bankrupt to defend herself.
Laws that allow “Race/religion” groups to claim “offence”…really…& the costs of process is the “punishment” along with I guess “damages”…boy oh boy. Put simply its all about silencing truth & dissent.
We ALL have to fight the ignorance in any way we can…with word of mouth EVERYWHERE we can….or go down the “Bolsheviks” tricks way again.

Oct 31…logged in on my tablet using Brave. Brave also works on my phone.

But it didn’t work a couple of days ago. Came within half a second of deleting the CN icon from my home page but then realized, given your content, the problem had to be some kind of DOS attack so I waited. I fear many may not have.

This speaks to the need for some kind of banner on your site to alert particularly new readers about the possibility of this happening and your plan B if/when it does happen again. Email newsletter perhaps? This is the approach taken by Vigilant Fox. Everything on their website is in their newsletter so no issues with DOS attacks.

The podcasts were available the whole time, so that might be a good place for a notice of attack and/or some sort of site mirror. Having two complete URLs might be pricey, but a security measure. CN would be sadly missed, so I hope you can improve your security somehow.

I cleared the cache on my phone and computer. It works now, thanks to CN for the heads up and fighting the good fight.

When I first discovered that the website was hijacked, I became very angry, but then after I thought about it, I was not surprised.

The US is an authoritarian oligarchy, with “unlimited political bribery” as Jimmy Carter said after the Citizens United decision formalized it. The oligarchy – both corporations and govt. agencies – break laws with impunity, the Bill of Rights has been made a mockery of. The Rule of Law has also been made a mockery of. The TBTF banks are above the law, corporations are above the law, and the US gov is above the law.

We will have to resist the authoritarian crackdown and further monopolization of media at all costs. Otherwise, we will continue to descend into a Neo-Feudal, Techno-Totalitarian dystopia. Thanks again to CN for being part of the resistance.

Good to Consortium News back in action, reporting the Truth as always, in the never-ending media corruption by the powerful ruling-elite using government agencies and large media giants to suppress and distort the news. November 1, 2024 at 14:24

Dianne, you and I share the exact same constellation of problems, except that I use a desk top model computer (acquired in 2019 because the crooks said that Windows 7 was being removed post-haste from all service. Surprise, now they say that Windows 10 is being dumped and you MUST adopt Windows11 (which they will probably soon abandon, but not before our generation is comfortably dead. )

Frankly (and with all due respect to CN), when I go to the top of THIS page I see no such instructions for fixing the problem. I cannot get to MOST other pages using a normal log-on procedure. Only the “Etudes” (yeah, “lessons for us all!”) screen invariably appears.

But then, I’m so uneducated in cyber matters, and unmotivated at age 77 to learn the massive technical foundation underlying it all, that I basically end up locked out of any and every site that requires a “username,” passwords and multiple-level identity checks–especially when the sites unilaterally change such things out from under me simply because I haven’t used their services for a prolonged period. Then I am instructed to plead “forgot password,” when I have NOT forgotten anything and, in fact, have it written down on paper right in front of me! This includes critical things like medical services, in addition to simple straightforward communication (chatting), which I do little of.

I find myself agreeing with Paul Craig Roberts who recently proclaimed that the digital age was totally embraced far too early, before humans were ready for it (or it was ready for humans), when using it (as our business and political leadership dogmatically decided to do come hell or highwater) even when far less efficient and far more troublesome than the old ways of no more than a decade ago. If this is not true, why do we all inevitably lose our minds and decry the madness that ensues when we try to communicate with the robots that they put before us, even to impede the simplest, most trivial of matters? Why must it now take days rather than minutes to refill our medical prescriptions if my assertion is not true? Or how about being blocked from scheduling an office visit with my doctor when I inevitably forget the appropriate passwords? When and why did a simple “DOB” proclamation go from being the keys to the kingdom to probable cause for an identify theft? By how much am I shortening my lifespan by having to scream at these robots before they will put an actually conversant human being on the line, preferably one who speaks English that can be understood through the seemingly required heavy foreign accent? If AI can make Mohammed Ali sound exactly like Winston Churchill why is it not being employed in this context? Is the added drama to make our lives more exciting, or what? Personally, I am NOT being entertained.

“how come they leave this source of reliable information

I an appalled at this apparent political attack, but not surprised.
The hackers were likely cutouts aligned with secret agencies or a political party.
The FBI is well known to harass those who observe their abuses of public office.
The zionists are among the most likely suspects in motive and practices.
It would be a top story to identify the hackers!

Yes, everyday I receive spam emails claiming to be from Russia and using Cyrillic type.
The spam sources were traced to Texas, where the abusers had shell corporations as a cover.
When I sued the FBI for political corruption these “Russia” spams jumped to 196 per day.
When the DC District court claimed the FBI has IMMUNITY for political racketeering crime,
an absurd and grossly anti-Constitutional perjury of law, the emails decreased to almost zero.

There are few sources of news that one can rely on in this day and age. As much as I dislike Trump and have some huge doubts, I fear the party now in the White House even more for all the lies and disinformation and their attack on free speech and the integrity media/press along with the wars and their obvious lack of concern for their own nation. It is truly their own fault that people are voting for Trump. X is looking into some shenanigans because Harris is not being fact-checked on many of her comments in Community Notes in which you can do that. X kicked me off some time ago permanently and glad to know I’m in good company with the likes of Nathan Robinson. Did not vote for either of these pretenders.

I obviously don’t know squat about computer coding, except that the hackers permanently installed some kind of virus that can’t be removed or even detected–at least on Windows 10. Next they’ll be demanding beaucoup bucks to cage their little monster. I fear this is just a preview for a full scale EMP event, permanently shutting down most national power grids, and the “worldwide web,” by one of our exquisitely cultivated enemies or an out-of-control “friend.”

There is no evidence that this was a malware attack, so virus removal won’t help. This was a cyberattack according to our web host and we are working on identifying the culprit. Please see the article we just published at the top of the page on how to clear your cache, which should allow you to gain access to the site.

Thank goodness you’re back! Thank you so much for all your hard work. No question, we’re in 1984 territory. This attack was retaliation for telling the truth and fighting the censors.

Glad to see you successfully wrested your site back. These Mossad/CIA goons will never stop truth (I hope they’re reading all these comments btw, and if they are – my message to them is Go fuck yourselves you Fascist murderous scum),

I also noticed this morning my Rumble App (used to watch RT) was having difficulty loading content. Seems you’re not alone

Keep up the great work! We journalists and supporters of a free press are always behind you!! Chins up, fight on!

Mossad or CIA? Is there a difference? Does it matter? The barbarism in the Middle East is at a level not seen since the genocide in Eastern Europe. Prior to Operation Barbarossa in 1941, the invasion of the Soviet Union, it was explicit policy to starve THIRTY MILLION Russians to death. The Soviet Union suffered between TWENTY AND TWENTY SEVEN MILLION victims. IDF or WAFFEN SS, EINSATZ GRUPPEN or ISRAELI AIRFORCE. What’s the difference? CN is crucial to talk about this reality. I hope that readers are reading Al Jazeera daily to keep up with the level of daily massacres largely ignored by the entire Western Press.

Hang in there guys – you’re the best there ever was, and I’ve missed you. BUT I knew I’d see you again soon, Whew!

    My guess is AIPAC!

Thank goodness! well done, and congratulations for ‘winning the battle’ on this occasion. Obviously the credibility of your reporting has drawn the ire of those managing the ‘mind-space’, and you are over too many targets!
CN is a primary trusted news source for me.

So pleased you are back online… And very curious to know who was the culprit! This attack on your excellent journalism was doomed to backfire: So why go ahead with the plan and risk being uncovered?
Is the rot in the Empire so deep that they don’t care anymore about appearances and are into naked intimidation?

Holy Cow! I didn’t know what was going on only that I couldn’t get into CN – I just kept getting some stupid blog page set up which wouldn’t let me go any farther. I’m so glad you are back up and running! CN is definitely my go to source for truth, honesty and integrity. I’m sure the US government and western cronies were responsible – who else would be capable of doing this dastardly deed? I’m so glad you are back up and running – I’m amazed at how much I missed you these past few days!

USGov & Western Cronies? Hell, they’ve got full support from the guy who created Google, hangs around Silicon Valley, hates Putin and has the initials “SB.” Don’t know if he keeps a special list like Zelensky does.

    If there were water
    And no rock
    If there were rock
    And also water
    And water
    A spring
    A pool among the rock
If there were the sound of water only
    Not the cicada
    And dry grass singing
But sound of water over a rock
Where the hermit-thrush sings in the pine trees
Drip drop drip drop drop drop drop
    But there is no water

Beautiful…..thank you. Brings me back to my youth when I had all of Waste Land and half of Four Quartets memorized. Elliot’s lines have enriched my mind all these decades, but I never run into them in the mind space I live in now.

I sincerely hope you are able to track down the culprit(s). They need to be exposed and face legal consequences. I also wouldn’t be surprised to learn it was our own government which is eager to shut down any and all independent thought. This is not only a fight to retain the right to speak and publish, but the right to think for ourselves.

He has Kennedy and Gabbard behind him. No censorship in his administration. Yes, he says off the wall things, but if you vote Harris the First Amendmentis the first thing to go…She says it’s “dangerous.”

      • Rob Roy
        October 31, 2024 at 15:40

Harris’s first order is to get rid of the First Amendment, which she and Walz say is “dangerous.” Yes, Trump says off the wall things, but censorship will not be in his administration. He will have Kennedy and Gabbard in his administration, not the warmongers who’ve gone over to the Dems and were greeted with joy and open arms for their endorsement.

Welcome Back CN! You are my number one news source.

At the same time as CN went off line DW News (Germany) reported that both political campaigns had their telecom services hacked. The FBI report suggested that China was responsible….. Yeah, sure.

At this stage Washington and Israel are one single entity under AIPAC. That would be my guess.

Yes…it is obviously the NSA et al.
Hence the party in power is probably responsible.
The Republicans would not be able to pull this off.
