For me, the big red flag went up when Obama came to power.
The Cheney/Bush mass surveilence program was awful. When Obama came to power, there was at least an opportunity for the proclaimed ‘constitutional scholar’ to kill that program. Obama obviously did nothing. Which clearly said that he saw this as a cool toy that he could put to use. And of course, the biggest danger to a democracy is when the officials in power start spying on what should be private political conversations. Anyone of Obama’s generation knew all about J. Edgar Hoover’s infamous file cabinets.
