Are We Worth It?

By Robert Parry
December 22, 2007

Like millions of Americans, we’ll be traveling some before Christmas, so we’ll probably not be posting as many stories as usual. But we are leaving up on the home page the stories from the past six or seven weeks for you to review while making an assessment of whether we’re worth it.

That’s because you – our readers – are the ones who will decide whether we can continue as a source of independent news. Either we make it with your financial support – through donations and book sales – or we don’t.

I wish there were a financial angel or big foundation that could make all this easier, but we haven’t found one.

So, with that in mind, I wanted to point out some of our recent work that you might have missed or might want to read again.

Then, if you have a moment, please send us an e-mail or make a blog posting on the question: “Are we worth it?”

On our home page, you’ll find stories that criticized the congressional Democrats and others who failed to stand up to President Bush. See, for instance, “Democrats’ Year of Living Fecklessly,” “Why the Democrats Could Lose,” and “Are Americans ‘Better Than That?’.”

We’ve also continued our long pattern of confronting Bush over his lies and executive abuses. See “Bush’s Favorite Lie.” “Bush’s Clever Cognitive Dissonance,” “The Bush Rules of Evidence,” and “Bush Spins Iran’s Centrifuges.”

Even as the major U.S. news media again went mushy on the ongoing tragedy in the Middle East, we offered a critical perspective. See “Iraq’s Laboratory of Repression,” “The Triumphant Neocons,” “A Miracle: Honest Intel on Iran,” “Neocons Down, Not Out,” and “Mobile Labs to Target Iraqis for Death.”

We provided some reminders about important chapters of recent history. See “Six Years After ‘Gore’s Victory’,” “The Man Who Bombed Hiroshima,” “The Truth About Colin Powell,” “Gary Webb’s Enduring Legacy,” and “Henry Hyde: Mr. Cover-up.”

With the upcoming election year, we also turned to the 2008 campaign. See “WPost Buys into Anti-Obama Bigotry,” “Huckabee’s Chairman Hid Payoff Secret,” “Is Hillary or Barack More Vulnerable,” and “Huckabee & the Persecuted Christians.”

There also have been some great guest essays. See “Needed Now: Spirit of the Sixties,” “Bush’s Torture Policy Is a Cancer,” “America as a Prisoner of Primacy,” “The Poodles of the U.S. News Media,” and more.

So take some time over the holidays to review this work – and give us your opinion.

If you think we are worth it and want to support what we do, please consider a tax-deductible donation to help us reach our bare-bones goal of $50,000 by the end of the year.

You can donate either by credit card at the Web site or by check mailed to:

Consortium for Independent Journalism; Suite 102-231; 2200 Wilson Blvd.; Arlington, VA 22201.

You can also contribute by PayPal to our account which is named after our e-mail address: “[email protected].”

For donations of $100 or more, we will send you an autographed gift copy of either our new book, Neck Deep, (in paperback) or, if you prefer, one of my earlier books, Lost History or Secrecy & Privilege.

For donations of $150 or more, you can get a signed copy of Neck Deep in hard cover.

If you have contributed already, you have our undying thanks.

Happy Holidays.

Robert Parry, Editor

Robert Parry broke many of the Iran-Contra stories in the 1980s for the Associated Press and Newsweek. His latest book, Neck Deep: The Disastrous Presidency of George W. Bush, was written with two of his sons, Sam and Nat, and can be ordered at neckdeepbook.com.
