Craig Murray: Losing My Religion

The institutions of international law have failed, as deeply shocking things have happened these past three years as conscious acts of western governments acting in unison. The Genocide in Gaza is only the most obvious.

I have lost faith both in Western social democracy, and in the institutions of international law. As both have been fundamental to the work of my life, this is rather a blow as I approach 70.

A number of deeply shocking things have happened this past three years, not as extraneous events, but as conscious acts of western governments acting in unison. The Genocide in Gaza has been the most obvious.

When social media started to show us relentless imagery of shredded children and human suffering beyond belief, it was astonishing to me that the governments of the western social democracies almost unanimously continued to support Israel. The U.K. is actively complicit in the genocide, providing weaponry, aerial surveillance, intelligence cooperation and vital diplomatic and political support to Israel.

Somehow, I thought this would all stop. Equilibrium would be restored, the innate decency of the British people would prevail, and the support for Israel would be reversed. Indeed, I reasoned, in the long term this could break the hold of the Zionist donor network on British politicians, so deep was the popular revulsion at the most public and vicious genocide imaginable.

None of this happened. Instead the more indefensible Israel’s actions have become, the more the U.K.’s political and media establishment have rallied to Israel. In the U.K. as throughout the world, our rulers have responded to dissent over Israel with harsh repression of their own people.

To see Andy Burnham, the British prime minister, stand at the podium of the U.N. General Assembly in New York and declare the U.K.’s support for Israel, while the genocide continues and Israel is relentlessly destroying southern Lebanon and is occupying southern Syria, was instructive.

His tactical change of tone to notice Israeli crimes has no practical effect. The U.K. implements new sanctions on Russia within 48 hours of announcement, or even less. The “sanctions” on Israeli illegal settlements are going to take a year to design and implement, to make certain they don’t work.

When they proscribed as “terrorist” a civil disobedience group and police started arresting little old ladies as terrorists for protesting about it, I thought this too was a temporary madness which would pass. I witnessed outside the Royal Courts of Justice the police lifting up elderly people in wheelchairs to arrest them for holding a sign, and I thought ultimately the system will repudiate this madness.

It has not repudiated the madness. It turns out that policemen are happy to arrest octogenarian priests for expressing the wrong thoughts, and judges are prepared to impose vicious “terrorist connection” prison terms for property damage by persons seeking to hinder a genocide. The English Court of Appeal stated coldly:

“The vast majority of those arrested had chosen to hold signs which read, “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action”. We attach little weight to this when it comes to assessing the extent of the interference with Convention rights in this case. All those holding such signs either did or ought to have realised that what they were doing was showing support for Palestine Action.

It is one thing for people voluntarily to hold a placard supporting Palestine Action which they know to be a proscribed organisation. That is a criminal act.”

‘Nazi Justice’

Imperial Court Building, Leipzig, Germany, which served from 1895 to 1945, as seat of the Imperial Court. The Third Reich Prosecutor’s Office was headquartered there, 2024. (Von Tobias, Own Work, CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia)

I have mentioned this to you before but I was very struck when I read Irmtrud Wojak’s book on the life of Fritz Bauer by the continuity of individual judges and lawyers, who served on with equanimity under the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and West Germany without evidence of guilt and remorse. About 70 percent of West German judges had been Nazi judges administering “Nazi justice.”

Fritz Bauer, a radical German Jewish prosecutor, was continually blocked in his heroic efforts to bring some justice. The book held me so strongly because it is the granular narration of the banality of evil, in its tale after tale of Nazi criminals protected by compromised judges.

The realisation that the law is nothing to do with justice, and that courts are imposing the power of the state rather than seeking some higher ideal, came home to me on Friday as we sat through the expedited hearing of our appeal at the Court of Session in Edinburgh, where we are trying to make the Scottish judicial review of the proscription of Palestine Action actually happen.

This was our sixth or seventh time in court and we have spent about £250,000 trying to protect the liberties of people in Scotland from oppression. Very decent people are being branded as terrorists, with potentially life-changing consequences, for merely holding a placard or wearing a T-shirt.

I met one person in Glasgow whose home and vehicle insurance had increased by over £600 as a result of a terrorism charge for a T-shirt. Others have been debanked. International travel is restricted. The jail sentences are still to come.

Secret Evidence and ‘National Security’

Appeal hearing of the Palestine Action case, Craig Murray for judicial review of the Terrorism Act 2000 (Proscribed Organisations) (Amendment), Order 2025. (Screenshot via CraigMurray.org.uk)

The Court of Appeal of England and Wales has ruled all this as proportionate in the interests of “National Security,” to protect the nation from those who would disrupt the Israeli weapons supply chain. Our effort to challenge it in Scotland has met with delay after delay, and a blistering exhibition of trench lawfare by the U.K. government.

I don’t think the judges of the Inner House of the Court of Session who heard us on Friday could have been less engaged. Aidan O’Neill KC spoke for us for over an hour about the constitutional right of Scots to have their liberties protected by a Scottish court, about the lack of any provision in Court Rules for suspending – “sisting” – a judicial review as this one had been – about the perverse decision to grant the Review and then continually suspend it, causing us great expense.

What he did not talk about – because this was a purely procedural hearing – was the arrests and lives in turmoil in Scotland, still less the lives destroyed in Gaza.

The three judges sat making notes but did not engage with Aidan, asking almost no questions.

This was entirely different when the U.K. Government lawyer, Mark Lindsay KC, addressed the court very briefly. The judges engaged with him constantly, to reinforce his points or to suggest additional helpful points he might have missed.

Lord Pentland, the Lord President of the Court of Session (and former Tory parliamentary candidate) got most animated when discussing the secret closed court sessions where secret intelligence evidence is heard that we are never told about.

Pentland seemed extremely pleased with the notion that these are difficult and time consuming and there could not be enough time for them before the U.K. Supreme Court hears the English appeal on November 4.

Mark Lindsay added here the incredible point that the judgement in the judicial review must be cleared with the security services, which would take at least five days. He explained that one reason it takes so long is that it needs to be typed on special secure laptops.

So that is where we are in 2026. Courts hearing secret evidence from the security services that the petitioner in the case will never see, and the security services vetting the judgement of the court.

The other reasons Lindsay advanced for not having a judicial review were equally jaw dropping. It would cost money, and use judicial resources that might be better deployed on something else. It would simply be too expensive for Scotland. Best just follow whatever England said.

I have to say I left court deeply depressed. Judgement is reserved – itself significant when we were arguing for the judicial review to proceed urgently before the Supreme Court meets.

Currently the full video of the hearing is still available here.

UN Debased and Courts Under Attack

If that was not miserable enough, we also had to endure the U.N. General Assembly being treated, not as a meeting point for nations to speak peace and reach agreement, but as a rostrum for crazed fascism.

We had Donald Trump threatening to annihilate Iran and destroy Iranian culture. We had I.C.C.-wanted war criminal Netanyahu waving around pagers to glory in terrorism while taunting the world.

Both spoke from a position of confidence in military power enabling them to defy and humiliate the world community. It may be hubris, but it is currently in the ascendant. China shows no interest in countering it and nobody else really can.

Neither China nor Russia were strong in condemnation of Israel over Gaza – they did not speak the language of war crimes at the General Assembly, let alone genocide. Both made anodyne remarks about a two-state solution and said that Israeli actions were endangering its viability.

As it is blindingly obvious that a two-state solution is now impossible, this was pathetic. Remember – and this is key to understanding the world today – neither Russia nor China vetoed the U.N. Security Council resolution endorsing Trump’s Board of Peace and giving it a firm right in international law to control the destiny of Gaza.

The European powers used the U.N. podium to spout Russophobia and amplify the demand for war with Russia.

I despair for the United Nations. I despair for the International Criminal Court (I.C.C.), which seems fatally undermined. Its arrest warrant for Netanyahu is ignored by the Western powers. Three E.U. states allowed his plane to overfly their airspace en route to New York.

Karim Khan was ousted as Chief Prosecutor for obtaining the warrant against Netanyahu, on flimsy sexual abuse allegations for which an inquiry by three judges found no firm evidence. The Western powers led a fierce campaign for his dismissal by the member states.

The judges themselves have been subject to U.S. sanctions and debanking. I had always hoped – and believed – the I.C.C. would develop beyond a role of punishing the West’s designated enemies and keeping Africa in line. I did not realise that as soon as the I.C.C. did this, the Western powers would move to destroy the I.C.C.

The venerable International Court of Justice (I.C.J.) is also creaking. I had expected it would take three years or so for it to reach a decision in the South Africa vs. Israel genocide case. That timetable now looks more like eight years.

In part it seems that South Africa may have blinked. It was South Africa which requested an extraordinary 18 months to reply to Israel’s response to their petition. The Court had already granted Israel two lengthy postponements of their reply. The Israelis will then get to reply again and a further 18 months. I suspect South Africa is going along with kicking the can down the road under pressure, and the new timetable will take us beyond Trump.

It is however not a good look for the Court to take so long in deciding on a case over a convention which is supposed to prevent genocide, not to punish it. It is also notable that Israel has entirely ignored the interim orders the Court gave two years ago, and ignored the separate judgement on the status of the Occupied Territories.

The truth is the Court has no armies, and as the Western powers are actively abetting Israel in its actions the I.C.J. is, sadly, a dead letter.

The U.K. is now going to ignore the I.C.J. decision on the Chagos Islands. The court ruled that the U.K. must give them back to Mauritius. The U.S. airbase on Diego Garcia is irrelevant to that I.C.J. decision. The U.K. has now decided to defy the I.C.J. because the U.S. has declined to pay for the lease of the airbase from Mauritius.

That in no way negates the duty to return the islands. But the U.K. media have reported Defence Secretary Wes Streeting’s decision to cancel the return of the islands with, so far as I have seen, no reference to the I.C.J. at all.

It is not just that the institutions of law, both domestically and internationally, in which I have lost belief. The social contract of Western nations, in which the government provides for the welfare of the population in return for their loyalty and taxes, appears to have broken down.

The trend towards greater wealth inequality in late-stage capitalism is incredibly, exponentially rapid. Living standards for ordinary people have been static for two decades and, whatever official statistics may say, to many it feels their standard of living has declined. Social mobility is gone. Graduates are stacking shelves and delivering pizzas. Heating and fuel costs are extraordinary. So is rent, and landlordism is rampant.

It is impossible to look at social media without hitting the stark reality that Islamophobia and racism are now deeply seated in a large proportion of the population. The propaganda model has been reinforced by the billionaire capture of all the major social media gatekeeper apps.

Rather than being a possible solution to state and billionaire propaganda, social media has become a major part of the problem. It appears particularly effective in amplifying and spreading racism.

We are now faced with a Ministry of Truth in the U.K. to enforce state propaganda narratives – like the ridiculous Skripal story, the ambulances false flag or the Fairford farrago. The one thing we know for certain about “R.A.F.” – truly U.S.A.F. – Fairford is that hundreds of tonnes of high explosive have been dropped from Fairford on Iran.

The notion of “defensive bombing” – parroted by the entire media – is an Orwellian symptom of what we have become.

There is no escaping the fact that large numbers of people are very susceptible to the propaganda. I know well-meaning left-wing people who believe that Iran machine gunned 50,000 dissidents and that nothing significant happened in Ukraine before 2022.

The focus of hate away from the billionaire class who are enslaving society, and towards immigrants, is most worrying of all.

It of course feeds both domestic and foreign policy views – there are vast numbers of people delighted at the mass murder of Iranians, Palestinians, Lebanese or Yemenis because they are brown or Muslim. The same people think that immigrants in small boats are responsible for the decline in standard of living of working people in the U.K.

Western social democracy is dying.

The democracy bit offers no meaningful choice at election in terms of wealth distribution or the structure of capitalist society. It offers no significant variation on the increasingly authoritarian nature of the state. It certainly offers no choice in foreign or defence policy. It really only offers a bit more or a bit less racism in immigration and welfare policies.

The social bit is decaying even faster. The very fabric of our cities is visibly crumbling. In the U.K. the health service is strained beyond utility in a great many cases. State pensions are miserly and insufficient. Many young people have no prospect but to pay rent to landlords for poor quality housing their whole life. Many graduates will never find meaningful or satisfactory employment. All of this is getting palpably worse year by year.

I feel that the rather pleasant world I grew up in has been replaced by something much nastier and more raw. Literally dozens of my friends have been arrested these last three years, simply for what they say and think.

The problem with losing faith is how you replace it.

Trank you so much, dear Mr Murray. You certainly know William Butler Yeats ‘The second coming’.
” Turning and turning in the widening gyre the falcon cannot hear the falconer. Things fall apart the centre cannot hold. Mere anarchy is loosed upon the World. The blood-dimmed Tide is loosed and everywhere the ceremony of innocence is drowned. The best lack conviction while the worst are full of passionate intensity. ”
I think that we, the ordinary working class people could be the falcon and our inherent reason, our compassion, our intrinsic sense for right and wrong and the love we feel for our children is the falconer we cannot hear at the moment. Empire noise, the wicked voices of warmongers and their foul propaganda blocks us from hearing the voice of that falconer who resides in us not outside. The falconer’s voice is wise and meek. The gyre – the Empire noise -wants to devour our souls, wants us to lose our sense of gravity, of reality, of empathy and leave us as empty husks devoid of any moral compass. I still have hope that we will hear the voice of that falconer again because I still believe that voice is our true core.

About the why and how come-

the ‘epstein files’ likely explain a lot as soon as they are published unredacted.

Apart from “ordinary” corruption and blackmailing.

Plus, it is very possible that the greedy zionists (not to be confused with truly Jewish people!) of what is still called ‘israel’ are threatening every major capital with their (secret) nukes, should the zionists go down for any reason while mass murdering and robbing the people of Palestine, and others.

A Twinge of Anger: Once Upon a Crime

Are you kidding “…the innate decency of the British people…?” opposing all the other formerly, lesser regarded human beings; the Scots and Irish, of erstwhile historical days; lest we omit and forget the off-color subjugated Indian masses of Asia?

Cognitive dissonance, like any other affliction is not contained within geographic boundaries.

What of the Arab peoples of the Levant and Southwestern Asia?
May as well throw in European Jewry into the smelter as well.

Apparently, the entire African continent still remains bogged down the drain, in the clogged quagmire brought to the continent at the time of the civilizing deeds of innate European decency; imposed upon the entirety of indigenous souls.

Fool me once, fool me twice, or incessantly, as you see fit to treat those of us regarded as the unfit dregs of Western civilization.

Apparently Imperial Western decency still selectively sees fit to divide humanity into gods and dogs, without the blink of an eye!

It appears because the nations that the West depended on for their standard of living especially those of the capitalist wealthy class, are claiming their sovereignty and independence from Western control that the west will stop at nothing, including genocide of its own people and of others. People will wake up when it hurts bad enough and probably when its too late. The world is dying and these dysfunctional leaders know of no other way than war to survive by gathering, thru proxies like Israel or Ukraine control of as much of the earth’s remaining resources as they are able for themselves. It’s a suicide mission in which no one will win and all will suffer. The lack of intelligent diplomacy is mind blowing. Only Neanderthal intelligence seems to rule. What do we blame it on? The lead and other toxins in our air, water and food, the fluoride in our water, or just plain idiocy. Israel and CIA killed all the leaders in USA in the 60s and prior to, across the world that would have taken the world in a different direction. Mark my words; we won’t survive this all out assault on humanity.

When supposedly enlightened societies intellectually and socio-economically engineer the programmed sophisticated undermining of faith and religion across the world over the decades it is only “natural” that they modernize and “progress” into delighting in “creative” mass murders and choreographing genocides ! It is tragic that the “allegedly” God-choosen people are incorrigibly thriving at perpetuating it from every nodule of modern life. Craig might have noticed that Russia and China have learned to take these on their strides as they go about planning their own”progresses”. What a world we are heading into !

A rising hope to regain global law and order (enforceable world law) comes from the Earth Constitution/Earth Federation Movement. Peace and human rights activists are working towards “retiring” the failed UN Security Council and fatally flawed UN Charter with a ready to go world constitution. We cannot fix the world until we replace the UN Charter. The Earth Constitution is our guide, authority and model for democratic world federal government — the only way to end war, eliminate nukes, and better protect human and environmental rights.

We envision the illegitimate UN Security Council replaced by the UN General Assembly becoming part of a World Parliament under the Earth Constitution. Join us! (Contact me.) Our strategy is to replace the undemocratic UNSC with a World Parliament birthed our of the UNGA.

Reads like a plausible initiative, certainly. But given the less than desirable track records, of upper classes captured most national parliaments the world over, on issues such as mitigating socio-economic justice, wider distribution of equity, pursuing truly national development, reducing destructive armaments in favour of increasing socio-civilizational uplift, and cooperative execution of world environmental and climate health if not also global peace ; what guarantee is there that a world parliament too would not be variously hogged by the privileged, if not also incompetent, elites to the continued misery of the global population at large ? Can totally brainwashed and highly miseducated elites long committed to a radical DEPOPULATION agenda in favour of a tactically nurtured “Golden Billion” be entrusted with the future of a DIVINELY-ORDAINED enlarging humanity to partake in the bounties of a vast UNIVERSE ? Or should the universe be left to the semian antics of the Epstein class and their bootlickers to GREEDILY pollute ?

Craig Murray is absolutely right. It is shameful to see how the European countries are bending their head towards Israel and accepting all the horrors it does towards the Palestinians. Furthermore they tend to forget that that their leaders were terrorsists for the British

I find it astonishing that you believed any of these criminal acts would pass as some sort of temporary flareup, soon to be forgotten. It is most astonishing for a former diplomat to be so easily fooled. Because others are under the same delusion is the reason the genocide continues, the reason protesters are arrested, and the government doubles down on absurd lies, such as the recent arrest an release of “terrorists” at Fairford airbase. You of all people, Craig, should have realized exactly what you say you have only now, all of a sudden, realized. You are “losing your religion”? The religion of U.S. imperialism?

Craig Murray says, “Western social democracy is dying.” With respect, however, to a world majority under duress, so-called Western social democracy did not do much good even when it was alive and well.

Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, famously said world leaders must stop invoking the “rules-based international order” as if it functions as advertised.

If the West ever did anything meaningful for its own citizenry, it was when challenged by a formidable peer competitor—the Soviet Union—after its Second World War victory. The West was forced to invent Cold War One to manage and control the Soviet rise. Part of that management involved looking after its own people, and it was largely successful.

However, as the world enters the US-made Cold War Two, evidence shows that this time, unlike Cold War One, the US will not succeed in containing China’s rise as the new world leader. The Western neoliberal/globalized economic model is fast declining, and the West seems unable to revive it. A combination of Western economic decline, China’s emergence as a great economic power, and the US attempt to contain China seems to be driving the chaos and wars inflicted upon the world. This chaos extends from so-called Western social democracy to the institutions of international law and the main choke points of the world economy and geopolitics.

When the leader of the country representing the world’s most important emerging economy no longer attends the UN meeting, that signals chaos and the decline of the institutions that symbolized international law.

This is only the beginning. We are at the start of Cold War Two and the birth of a new world order. Ensuing wars and chaos are inevitable, and these will include Craig Murray’s social democracy

A fantastic reading of near modern and current histories ! The differentiation of both Cold Wars is superbly apt. Cold War one, whoever were the real architects, was clearly altruistic if not also entirely benign ; but Cold War two, its obvious architects being Zio-Cons with extremely reliable Indo-Chinese Banana drafttsmen combo, has been and am afraid would continue to be, highly malignant and mainly destructive if not also apocalyptic !

Canadian here. “Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, famously said world leaders must stop invoking the “rules-based international order” as if it functions as advertised.”

Mark Carney, our PM Goldman Sachs is one of the stars of the kabuki theatre we are witnessing produced and starring the leaders of all western nations. His remarks at Davos ring hollow when Canada continues to be one of the most loyalist of lap dogs to the US empire, and solidly supports Israel. His government is moving in the direction of Britain and the EU in creating laws to make criticism of and protest against Israel and Zionism a crime in Canada. All the while the homeless population increases across the country, the average Canadian struggles to put healthy food on the table, young people can’t find meaningful and decent paying work, and our public health care system is on death’s door, as Carney further reduces taxes on corporations and the his rich friends, is accelerating fossil fuel extraction and is putting an un-precedented amount of money into the military. It’s depressing. We really have no “left” party in Canada to fight any of this. The New Democratic Party (NDP) with a leader now that has firmly come out against Israel (he is Jewish) and has recently been threatened with violence in one of Canada’s biggest news outlets by the Zionist Jewish lobby in this country, has done little to critique our economic system and our foreign policy.

I am deeply saddened by your loss of faith in democratic institutions. What I seek to understand is what happened inside the person who once valued “the law”- seeing it as mark of being civilized – to separating it from justice in order to put people righteously appealing for mercy and justice for scapegoated bloodied Palestinians into degraded straits themselves because of their compassion for the downtrodden . These members of the managerial class (judges no less?) show a rift has happened inside them between their “managing” and their authentic “relating” with caring and heart.”managing “ deals with objects”and is intellectual and power driven; relating/caring involves heart and recognition of shared human-hood, an emotional sensitivity to our commonality as mortals. Wollin says inverted totalianism is a managed democracy marked by citizen apathy. Corporations view everything as “object”, stripping away relatedness and heart. A split in the psyche. Modern Western society has been soaked in corporate attitude/ethic. The infamous models for it are those psycho-and sociopaths , inhabiting the Epstein Fraternity. The metaphor. Young girls are stolen, used/exploited/terribly wounded, then thrown away.Isn’t this “corporate” – objectify, excavate-penetrate-commodify- use-sell- throw away to maximize self aggrandizing profit and power? A new form of the patriarchy where feeling values are denigrated. The feminine-relating, loving, tenderness, nourishing, vulnerability, mercy, compassion- whether in woman or man – becomes “a use-able, co-optable, Sellable, buy-able thing for power and profit. Is “Rape. ” Authentic caring, respect, communion, compassion, affection, mutual trust and regard, even cherishing – twisted, hollowed out, deadened to the bottomless craving of the “Epstein Fraternity” to own. You. Me. Them. And so Control and Dominate. Where there is only Power there is no Love.

Yes. Heartbreaking. Despite the complete self-serving incompetence of the current Western political class, “Epstein class” seems a more appropriate description, I blame the traitorous mainstream media. When media forgoes its role as the “fourth estate,” holding power to account, it inevitably becomes a “fifth column” that betrays the public for vested interests. IMO, mainstream media is now the mortal enemy of the public. Just like the American government that is owned by Zionists, the MSM, too, is irredeemable.

Unfortunately, besides the Anglo-Saxon world primarily, that also applies right across most of the First World and also liberally within the “West” in the Rest. The betrayal that you alluded to is not confined to just the various media but also extends into various technocratic and professional sectors, otherwise men-made crises and false-flags would be impossible to easily pull off !

I have the deepest sympathy with Craig’s feelings of dejection and of being let down by authorities who otherwise claim to be trustworthy and fair-minded.
All I can say is that we must make every attempt to go to the bottom of how these disgraceful decisions came to be made. This applies especially to those taken by prominent left-wing politicians, like the leader of the Labour Party. Exactly who influenced whom? And what threats were made, explicitly or implicitly?
Surely it can hardly be all that easy to “lean on” public figures so that their reputation for honesty and decent behavior is destroyed so radically and seemingly in one go. Where are the fearless whistleblowers who know exactly what’s going on and who should be prepared to spread their information far and wide?

You have succinctly and brilliantly expressed exactly how I feel. After having devoted the last 25 years of my life to peace-justice activism, highlighted by a trip to the Hague in 2018 to deliver a Green Party petition to investigate Israeli war crimes, I now give up. I am sustained by the goodness, kindness, beauty and spirituality in this world that still exists.

Indeed, I appreciate your thoughtful article. “BigLie Media” [K. Sanchez] must be boycotted; when the steady stream of lies and prevarications is broken, heads will begin to clear. Any disappointment that I might have concerning the actions, and inactions of Russia and China are set aside after I remember that this entire catastrophe is the purposeful product of Western states. Surprisingly, clear thinking results –not from intelligence– but from courage, as Thomas Szasz pointed out. And, as liberals seem wedded to the former, and disinclined to the latter, liberals will not be our allies as they were in 1933.
