Shaky truces are in place in Lebanon and Iran as the belligerents plot their next moves. Can an uncertain war become a certain peace? Ray McGovern and Scott Ritter this week on The World This Week. Watch the replay.
Guests: Ray McGovern and Scott Ritter. Interviewer: Joe Lauria. Producer: Cathy Vogan.
Just two days after Iran responded to a ceasefire in Lebanon by “completely” opening the Strait of Hormuz – prompting Donald Trump to declare the war all but over and himself luicrously as the victor – Iran’s military said today they are reimposing control over the strait until the U.S. ends its blockade of Iranian ports, as ineffective as it may be.
What happens now in this uncertain war? (apologies to Tacitus) Benjamin Netanyahu is unhappy with both ceasefires and the Israeli public is behind him. They want more war.
Trump is acting all tough with the Netanyahu. On social media. He wrote: “Israel will not be bombing Lebanon any longer. They are PROHIBITED from doing so by the U.S.A. Enough is enough!!! Thank you! President DJT.”
But what is his word worth when he faces Netanyahu behind closed doors?
It seems unlikely more war will produce a better result for Trump and Netanyahu.
An objective assessment shows that none of Trump’s and Netanyahu’s war aims were met in 40 days of war: the Iranian government was not overthrown, its ballistic missiles are still intact, Tehran maintains relationships with its regional allies, it continues to enrich uranium and still maintains its 6o percent stockpile.
This unnecessary, unprovoked war of aggression may come down to whether the U.S. and Israel can find a way to gracefully accept defeat. Otherwise we may just see a total war of revenge for losing.

I find myself deeply troubled toward the end of this exchange and the power that Trump is believed to have that would be such that accommodation must be made in order to avoid causing Trump to face defeat. I am reminded of a child who uses a temper tantrum in order to get its way.
Have you forgotten that Trump, by himself, could not possibly bring about the horrors we witness nor those we fear. It is all who have cooperated with him.
Is it not time to bring all of them to account? We cannot magically bring them before the Haugue, but we can bring them before the public tribunal.
Who cares about this analysisi of Trump? Is it not more important to publicly try all who support him? They make Trump possible.
Not only that. It is estimated because of climate chaos/climate change/global warming, whatever you prefer to call it, that within 60 years, the Gulf region will be uninhabitable. (At least outdoors.)
I read today that Iran have warned this next round will become a global war.
Perhaps the other superpowers have finally had enough of tolerating being bullied, mocked and blocked by a pack of braying imbeciles obedient only to their own desires.
Why has Trump changed his mind about attacking Iran?
It is quite obvious, that mossad have the black on Trump, videos photos tapes emails etc. if these became public ,not only would he have to resign his presidency,he could be jailed.
Scott’s remarks about the demise of the Gulf states reminded me of this quote, apparently from Rashin bin Saeed Al Mahtoum: “My grandfather rode a camel, my father rode a camel, I drive a Mercedes, my sone drives a Land Rover, his sone will drive a Land Rover, but his son will ride a camel.”
I have also seen a shorter version of this: “My father rode a camel. I drive a car. My son flies a jet airplane. His son will ride a camel.”
It reflects a concern over the reality that one day oil production rates will go into irreversible decline and the key source of wealth in the region will then wither way. The US-Israel/Iran war, as Scott underscores, may bring this about much more quickly than anticipated, as in the second version listed above.
Who ever heard of a triple tag-team? Well, I just did. Thank you. Great work, sirs. Have to listen to this one again.
The true goal is stopping the flow of oil to China. They’ve already negotiated with Indonesia for permission to blockade the strait of Malacca. All this other stuff is misdirection and a successful attempt to shift the blame to Israel.
There are too many goals to count: forestalling Adolf Netanyahu from releasing the Epstein videos of Trump; whipsawing the stock market for massive profits; justification for massive increases in war dept spending and increasing profits for the MIC; supplanting the global energy market with US oil and fracked gas; distraction from collapsing American economy and society; justification to increase surveillance and monitoring of citizens; attempt to derail BRICS; attempt to throttle China; etc., etc.
Before blaming all this on Conigula remember the Project for a New American Century, Wesley Clark warning of the plan to take 7 countries, Obama’s “pivot to Asia”, etc. Current events are the result of plans made decades ago and faithfully followed by all Oval Office and congressional puppets.
Great show Joe, Ray and Scott. Thank you for being here.
Peace.

Grace?
They wouldn’t know it from a crater in the ground.
I’d love to see Russia’s and Iran’s demands merged into one document and then become a principle that is somehow made enforcable at the UN for all countries.
Western privilege is long past is best before date, if it ever had one, and its underhanded and destructive antics have to be stopped.
We need a level global playing field. No more wars, sanctions, coups, kidnapping of countries’ leaders, assassinations and the like.
