The Fifth Online Vigil for Julian Assange

As the crisis over Julian Assange continues to mount, the fifth online vigil for Assange was broadcast live on Saturday by Consortium News. You can watch the entire event here.

The isolation of Julian Assange, publisher of WikiLeaks, continues unabated as his lawyers and the former president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, warn of deepening crisis for the imperiled asylee. These warnings come on the heel of the appointment of renowned Icelandic journalist Kristinn Hrafnsson as the new editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks – itself an indication of the dire circumstances at hand.

Assange’s most high-profile supporters mobilized for the fifth #Unity4J online vigil on Saturday  in solidarity with the silenced journalist. Guests included the CIA anti-torture whistleblower John Kiriakou, ex-U.S. House of Representatives member Cynthia McKinney, progressive comedian Graham Elwood and ACLU Board member and Radio Host Garland Nixon. You can watch the entire event here.

One thing we can do to help Julian Assange’s cause is donate to Consortium’s fund drive, now going on. What would I do without this wonderful source of real, true, and important news? And I still miss Robert Parry, may he be resting in peace, and if possible send us his help and inspiration from “Above?” !!! And God bless all the readers and supporters of Consortium!

We are so thankful for you. You have paid such a price. I pray we get some kind of Corbyn-type in office in the U.S. and that the threat of arrest melts away. We must evolve.

    So much gratitude and love…

Any trial against Assange in the U.S. will be closed to the public because of “national security” concerns and reported on only by the parrots of the mainstream media reprinting government press releases as if they were articles. I would hate it for my country to have even more innocent blood on its hands, especially that of a hero such as Assange.

I take comfort from the fact Assange’s work will never fade if people keep it alive through history. No one who has read Wikileaks documents can ever forget how little respect our governments have for us and for each other. And everyone can see proof of how bad Obama and Clinton are. (It goes without saying that Trump and his unindicted co-conspirators, the Republicans in Congress and on the Court, represent America at its worst.) Reading what is in Wikileaks also has one love more such leaders as FDR, who with all his faults and preserving of a rotten system, did a lot out of real care for the American people.

I expect a lot of people tuned in to the vigil but if they hit the techno”music” they tuned out.

    I sure did.

It is a bit discouraging to see relatively few comments on the “Support Assange” vigil thread.

It may be true that Assange’s best bet is to give himself up and stand trial.
Support and donations to his legal fund would pour in and his tormentors would be left with egg on their faces.
The danger is that he might simply be transferred to UK or USA solitary detention.
A la the Skripals (where *are* they?) and Chelsea Manning.

Our heroes and voices of conscience are exiled, in prison, or dead. Julian Assange should rightly be hailed a human being who stood up to the Death Star of the National Security State. We are all indebted to his courage, intelligence, and persistence in the face of overwhelming odds. Ditto for Edward Snowden.
I salute you Julian – and send my love and profound respect for what you have done for the sake of humanity!

    1. The USA is being and has been run by War Criminals since the Assaination of JFK and really since it’s Founding Myth. Rebel against the constant barrage of Media lies. Thank you Mr. Assange hope for the best, but there just seems to be to many zombie sheeple in this media circus of divide and conquer orchestrated by the Ruling class Fascists.

Where is his support here? OK, So Julian knows he has to leave and will be arrested sooner or later. If I was Julian I would voluntarily give up asylum and prove innocence by trial in England or the US.
He will be surprised with the support he will get from the constitution of laws for freedom of the press. What laws has he broken?

I think they are playing on his fears of Western powers and could be bluffing because a trial will show he is a hero of freedom of the press and the people’s right to know what governments are doing against the people’s freedom of the press. Asylum by now has become hiding and he needs to fight for his innocence.

Assange might be better of in a US court disproving their case. He wasn’t a US Govt. employee or bound by a secrecy contract.

    • Jörgen Hassler
      October 8, 2018 at 10:55

He’ll face a secret military tribunal. If he survives the tripp — he is in poor health, and accidents happen, you know.

      October 9, 2018 at 08:14

Even though Julian Assange is technically a “publisher” and not a “whistle-blower”, consider how the trial went for Sybil Edmonds. All about “State Secrets Privelege”.

They will know prior to the gavel starting the trial that he is “guilty” and he will not even be allowed a proper defense.

And this is the country our soldiers have “fought and died for”?

Julian Assange is a journalist and a truth-teller. There are not many journalists left — and published truth is vanishingly rare. I consider him a hero — this persecution of him, while sadly not surprising, is a travesty.

Truth is not moderated by patriotic fervor or by political or economic advantage. Julian and Wikileaks have offered a window on a path a little closer to truth, and to the peace and justice that can not exist without it. I hope he knows how much this means.

    Free Julian.

We are serving somebody else interests, not ours.
It is imposing on us by manipulating us.
Manipulation is done by information management.

Julian Assange is acting to expose the “hidden” information and bring it to our conscious.

        October 8, 2018 at 12:28

        Excellent reply Yoav.
Yes, Julian ¨is acting to expose the hidden information¨ – the truth – that would bring the cabal down were there a true justice apparatus. We must not abate from tirelessly carrying this truth onward. Hopefully, enough will join the demand for truth to exact change.

  21. October 6, 2018 at 15:01

Assange has done an enormous service to the world public getting the truth and for that giant gift the whole
world needs to be grateful and give its full support.

Great program. Julian Assange deserves our support on behalf of an independent media to counter the (CIA’s) “Mighty Wurlitzer” propaganda machine which appears to continue to be in operation. From a world citizen’s point of view, I don’t think the USA can be considered a “legitimate” nation because of its open rejection of international law for itself. Bolton and Trump essentially informing the world that the US is “above the law.” The American citizenry are stuck with a government that is openly criminal on the global stage, and declares itself to have impunity even when its leaders are responsible for world crimes (eg, invading Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya; drone assassinations without due process; covert operations to overthrow other even democratically elected governments; etc.)

I’d like to see American activists reach out more to other nations for help to reign in the out of control US government/Deep State. Earth Federation activists are calling for a “new UN” with a new world charter/constitution (Earth Constitution) which includes a democratic voice in global affairs and a well designed World Judiciary with enforcement. There’s no sheriff in town at the global level and as a result the UN’s P-5 and their proxy allies ignore international law at will. This is unacceptable. It’s time for a “new UN” given the tools it needs to put an end to war crimes and crimes against humanity, etc. The most obvious examples that come to mind is the US/NATO invasion of Iraq, and the rountine Israeli crimes against the Palestinians. Of course, there are other nations who commit crimes that the UN cannot prevent since it lacks an adequate judiciary system. Democratic World Federalists are calling for a review of the UN Charter. The Charter needs to be replaced.

I like the concept but the reality is that International law is toothless against the powerful and will remain so until power has been decentralised and diluted.

Watching from Sau Paulo, doing gigs here and all over S.America for the next two months. One of the messages I display during my intermission is, “Resist the attempted silencing of Julian Assange. Julian believes the truth will set us free! He is right. Let him go on being a good journalist.” People like you and John Pilger have kept the flame of hope burning in my breast all these years.

      G’day Roger. ??
I’m hoping to coordinate a series of concerts in association with #Unity4J and #FreeAssange to support Julian, educate and garner support for his freedom.
Is this something you would be interested in participating in?
      My email is [email protected]
Ideally concerts should occur on all cities participating in FreeAssange and Unity events, but certainly, concerts in England, Australia, Ecuador and the USA are paramount.
Of course I understand you are terribly busy and likely booked a year in advance of any concert dates I might propose, however, even a virtual appearance by video-link would be incredibly supportive and powerful.
I will hope to hear from you.
Love all you do. Much Kudos mate.

I don’t think that was rap, just syncopated techno. It had a sort of a countdown feel to it, which is appropriate even if a little annoying.
