Why Democrats Love Bush Now

The renewed popularity of George W. Bush among Democrats may reflect a growing tolerance of war among American voters, notes Caitlin Johnstone.

By Caitlin Johnstone

Will Ferrell returned to his familiar role last weekend as George W. Bush on Saturday Night Live, doing a bit on the recent news that the 43rd US president is now enjoying soaring popularity among Democrats.

It was a funny bit, I guess. Ferrell reminded the SNL audience how “historically not good” Dubya was, joked about thrown shoes and how Dick Cheney’s heart is made of Legos now, and of course snuck in the obligatory comment about Russia rigging America’s elections as though that’s a real thing.

The majority of the skit was built around a refrain you’re hearing more and more from Democratic pundits who haven’t quite lost their minds yet, reminding viewers that as bad as Trump is, he still hasn’t done anything remotely as bad as Bush’s full-scale ground invasions of nations where US troops are still involved.

Anyone with even a drop of self-awareness knows that the cuddly wuddly new image Dubya is enjoying in mainstream America is taking Trump hysteria a bridge too far. Even MSNBC stooge Chris Hayes said not long ago that “The Iraq War was worse than anything Donald Trump has done (so far).”

Yeah, they like to say that. What they never, ever like to do is acknowledge the far more uncomfortable fact that as bad as Trump is, he also still hasn’t done anything as bad as what the Obama administration did to Libya.

It’s true, though. For all the manymanymany evil things that this administration is guilty of, none of them come anywhere close to the destruction of an entire nation killing tens of thousands of people and creating a failed state where people are now sold as slaves. The destruction of Libya and attempted destruction of Syria that the Obama administration is guilty of have caused far more death and suffering than Trump has at this point in the game.

So I don’t think it’s accurate to suggest, as Ferrell’s Dubya character does, that Bush’s newfound popularity among Democrats is due solely to comparisons between the current Republican president and the last one. It’s impossible to hold Bush as the horribly evil butcher that he unquestionably was while cheering on his successor for eight years who only continued and expanded those same bloodthirsty agendas. In order to support Obama, you necessarily had to compartmentalize away from the horrors of the Bush administration.

But I think there’s an even more important factor at play here, and it’s this: Democrats spent 2016 gaslighting themselves into believing that a warmongering neocon who supported the Iraq invasion would make a fantastic president.

Time and time again in the lead-up to the 2016 primary and general elections I debated Hillary Clinton supporters from the perspective that her support for the Iraq invasion utterly disqualified her for the role of Commander-in-Chief of the most powerful military force in the history of civilization. And they argued right back, often on the grounds that the Iraq invasion wasn’t as bad as I was making it out to be.

Conversations and debates like this would have been happening all across the country that entire year, and Clinton supporters on that side of the debate would have to have found a way to contort their sense of reality into making Bush’s barbarism seem understandable and acceptable. They had to psych themselves into supporting their candidate.

The more rank-and-file Democrats have been forced to find a way to get okay with the idea of warmongering neocon presidents, the more they’re going to get okay with Bush.

And this is why members of the so-called “Resistance” would rather spend time drawing pictures of Robert Mueller riding on a shark than on trying to curb Trump’s Orwellian surveillance powers and unconstitutional war powers: those are Bush’s policies, and Democrats have been forced to gaslight themselves into falling in love with Bush.

Democrats are Bush now. Everything they once opposed they have now been manipulated into supporting, and the smiling, blood-soaked face of establishment politics is allowed to lull us all deeper and deeper into insanity.

Wake up. For God’s sake, wake up.

When it comes to foreign policy let’s face it, the Rs and Ds are on the same page. Now Trump is deploying special ops into the far reaches of Africa to do what exactly? Kill some local terrorists in some dusty godforsaken “shithole”? Okaaay. Bush- Iraq, Obama- Drone King, Trump – Black ops in shitholeland.

It is so good to see you on Consortiumnews, Caitlin. This site is a perfect vehicle for your unbought, unsold, clear-minded analyses of the American political scene — as this piece so clearly demonstrates. Your followup article on Bernie Sanders’ Russiagate promotion is also a much needed criticism, but I hope you will try to keep the level of your discourse closer to this one. Off-color language, when engaged in too heavily, may increase the entertainment value of an essay, but imo it weakens the arguments and alienates some readers.

You have the writing chops to say what you want to say, and say it beautifully, without a heavy reliance on profanity.

The one thing the Democrats seem not to hate Trump for, even to applaud, is when he speaks of our list of enemy nations and how we must be strong militarily to confront their evil intentions and doings. Watching the Trump State of the Union address on most matters the Democrats sat unmoving and stoney-faced with occasional smirks, but when the flag was waved and Iran, Russia etc was mentioned, they were on their feet. It was at that point I stopped watching Il Duce and maybe I missed moments when they didn’t cheer Trump’s bellicose remarks about our “enemies”. but I doubt it.

As the Ms. Johnstone notes, Trump is following the same script of as Bush and Obama (reallysince the end of World War II) and elevating Bush is just a way of covering their own behinds while taking yet another swipe at Trump.

To be fair ,Trump did try to work with Russia and not have WW3 as Hillary planned.

With a Democratic majority in Congress during H.W. ‘ s term the people had the sob’ s cornered into supporting healthcare reform and blocking NAFTA. In order to block healthcare reform and get NAFTA passed H.W. had to step aside and a stooge Democrat had to be elected.

No war. No war. No war. I do not know why you think there is tolerance for war among US citizens. I do not know one person who wants a war; most people want jobs that pay well.

“Most people want jobs that pay well.” Right, and those well-paying jobs generate tax liabilities
which go to fund . . . wars. With nary a peep from the people earning/paying those taxes.

      • February 6, 2018 at 10:32

Nary a peep, except in Febuary 2003 when millions protested across the world, in more than 600 cities against the Iraq war, which hadn’t even started yet. many of them were Americans-I would guess 250k in Washington DC based alone simply on my personal estimate-and that was after an “electrical glitch” caused trains serving routes between the north east and DC mysteriously stopped running that day. It was the biggest anti war protest history had ever seen, despite the press failing for the most part to mention it.

I think people would peep all the time but the people who run the asylum are very good at presenting the illusion that those potential (and actual) peepers are more alone and isolated than they actually are. I often reflect on whether protest in the street could ever be as effective as if the mass of people who believe war is wrong would simply refuse to buy or pay for anything for a period of time….or fail to file their taxes, or suddenly take 30 withholdings on their W2.

Thanks for this article and the interesting posts as always. In Germany Obama was and still is a saint. I’ve never understood that.I think it’s mainly because he’s black. The Germans would’ve preferred HRC to become president because mainly she’s a woman. Most people here have no idea what Obama really did and what was Hillary up to if she’d won the presidency.Wasn’t Trump right when he said that NATO in the present shape was obsolete.

You’re right–his “blackness” was his biggest asset. It allowed him to literally get away with murder and still be loved and revered by stupid liberals. They overlook the fact that he is half white and certainly represented (rich) white interests far more than black.

In a real world of diversification and equality, the race of any president shouldn’t matter. If this were held to it’s objective of all things being equal, where race, ethnicity, and religious beliefs, were not the deciding factors of any decision made, then why would it matter to be critical of a president no matter what their origins? Plus, if you strive to be the boss, then you need to develop the wherewithal to take the heat.

I don’t think Obama would mind the criticism so much, but his supporters being what they are, are another thing to deal with. Funny, if you only liked Obama for his being black, then what does that make you? I understand Black people loving him, as he is the first Black American President, but seriously shouldn’t our expectations be based more upon the quality of their proposed policies, or should we grade them on skin color and hair cuts? You tell me, because I just want an honest and good president, plus I want the whole of DC to wake up and take care of the people who put them all there.

I agree with you Nancy, hope my comment helps prop up your opinion. Joe

Who, which president from which party, escalated the Vietnam war into a nightmare for humanity? Who, which president created the “Great Society” – a program which deliberately created inner city bantustans of segregation?

Except on the margins there is no difference between the political parties.

Democrat or Republican “Global full spectrum domination.” is the overriding policy and goal. Serve and support the oligarchy, expand its monopoly power to the entire globe and kill or crush any opposition.

There are no “progressives” no “liberals” there are only servants to the oligarchy under a Neo-feudal system.

That Lyndon Johnson, with all his talk about his “Great Society” was the real enemy, that the Democratic Party itself voted for and supported the Vietnam slaughter of 4 million people just goes unnoticed by people calling themselves by these phony labels. The killing of Glass Steagall not by a Republican but by Bill Clinton.

The goals of the US Empire are clear and supported widely within the political class including Bernie Sanders.

The single minded pursuit of Neo-feudalism in the form of Neoliberalism, and Global full spectrum domination are the goals and morality of the elites who rule the US – ALL OF THEM – there are no innocents, human life and even nature itself are secondary to the goals.

I’m glad to see Caitlin Johnstone joining the Consortiumnews list of published authors. It is, as she indicates, profoundly disappointing to see Sanders swallow the Russiagate kool-aid. It is obvious to anybody not fully relying on the power structure’s media for information that the story is a total fraud, and it is disappointing that Sanders would be taken in. Anybody blindly accepting this story has jumped the shark and is following policies which are a threat to our survival.

The article states: “Democrats spent 2016 gaslighting themselves into believing that a warmongering neocon who supported the Iraq invasion would make a fantastic president.”

Her husband spends his time selling the same BS.

Former president Obama sold the same BS.

I totally agree that Trump has done far fewer dives into the deep end of militaristic adventures than Hillary would have dived into. You have to be a little bit cautious about a candidate on a mission to obliterate our enemies or our perceived enemies or some folks that the deep state just declared as our enemies like the Russians. After all this is a woman who had Al Qaeda staff members in her employment. In fact whole families of them.

I can rest knowing that delusional HRC is out of power. Delusional because she was going to save the world by going to war with it. What an utter absurdity. Bush was the same dupester going to war with the world as Cheney whipped his bottom side if he did not comply with the neocon requirement that the USA should launch a bunch of wars and destroy our “enemies”.

Of course we need a strong defense but we should always walk quietly around the World while carrying a big stick.

Our National interests are not served by beating up other countries with a big stick while engaging in paranoid fantasies about how this nation or that nation is involved in a conspiracy to foment terrorism. Such is the fodder for defense contractors and the Military Industrial Complex.

We need to have a leader brave enough to face the threat of war from within. A leader who will forge economic ties with former enemies and create a new world economy not based on war but based on trade.

Hillary was absolutely not the candidate to do that.

She was a shoe in for the establishment and a sucker for the paranoid fantasies of the right. She would have played into their soap opera fantasies and gone whole hog against phantom menaces to the delight of the MIC.

So good riddance to Hillary and good riddance to the Dems who were aligned with the dooms day war machine.

As long as Trump does not beat the war drums although he is constantly being poked to do by every entity in the media and our government intelligence agencies he has my support.

Everything in modern day American politics is built upon the commercial entertainment business models way of promoting, and protecting a star. A bad PR incident is handled with clever surgical care, as there is a process on how to recover your celebrity status, after a hot scandal. Now, I’m not sure how this works, but also in modern day America we know all about this business, because of the show ‘Scandal’ which is about the real life scandal recovery artist Judy Smith. Again I stress there even is a process for when a high ranking person screws up.

But while I’m sneaking a powered sugar donut and feeling guilty about it, only to look up at the kitchen tv screen to see George W Bush being all warm and cuddly with comedian Ellen DeGeneres, and before I smile I ponder to myself why ain’t this guy in jail, only reminds me once again to what an unaccountable world it is we live in.

The Clinton’s have to hold somekind of record for their scandal record. The Obama years are littered with distracting speeches, only to hide the nasty deed. With this in mind, ask yourself, have we Americans been conditioned by all of this, as to our continued support of these people goes unhindered? I would say that’s exactly what has happened, and warn you that it ain’t over yet.

Accountability is what our nation needs.

    • CitizenOne
      February 1, 2018 at 00:35

      Joe,

Accountability is what our nation needs.

It reminds me of an episode of South Park “About Last Night” where Obama and McCain were members of the “Presidential Crime Syndicate” and were conspiring to steal the Hope Diamond. The whole election was designed to commit the crime with McCain and Obama in league to commit the crime

At one point a White House Staffer says “You mean to tell me that the whole purpose of the election was to steal The Hope Diamond”

The answer was “Yes it was”

There is a lot of truth to that. Politics is an insiders game and every politician wants to be on the winning side. It is an insiders game too because the actions by presidents are about as lost in history as if they stole the Hope Diamond and were never accountable for it.

    • Bob Van Noy

But I think there’s an even more important factor at play here, and it’s this: Democrats spent 2016 gaslighting themselves into believing that a warmongering neocon who supported the Iraq invasion would make a fantastic president.

This seems reasonable to me as a partial explanation. Another factor is that GWB is now “old news”. Lots of us tend to focus on “now” to the exclusion of things past.

Finally, I’m rather doubtful about those poll numbers. In the first place, the polling company was founded by some conservative types. In the second, not only must we accept that Democrats now embrace Dumbya at the rate of 14% + 37%, but Black American support for the bastard is now 13% + 33%. In the case of the Blacks, that’s a jump of 14% since 2003. Even odder was how the 2003 Hispanic Love of the Codpiece Commander (67%) took a dive of 27% to 15% + 35%. It’s just hard to understand why post-Katrina Blacks and Hispanics had such substantial changes in their attitudes.

Saddam Hussein’s Iraq of 2003 neither posed nor voiced a threat to the United States. Iraq was dramatically weakened by the Gulf War and another decade of intermittent bombings plus sanctions and was effectively under the “control” of no-fly zones in the north and south. Weapons inspectors established the fact that even if Saddam had wanted to bite, he was toothless. And Iraq played absolutely no part in the crimes of 9/11.

How does one rationalize the destruction of civil infrastructure, shocking and aweing the hell out of a nation’s densely populated capital, and the disestablishment of a nation’s legal and political frameworks in order to privatize resources and set up contracts that redound to foreigners rather than citizens? How does one rationalize the use of depleted uranium and the kicking in of doors, and arbitrary detention, and militarized occupation and Fallujah–my God Fallujah! And all these years later Mosul–my God Mosul!

How does one rationalize fostering sectarian divides (you know Condi) through terrorist incitements to further the chaos and “justify” more war (surge away Petraeus)– and then using the “failed state” (in conjunction with a similar fate for Libya) to mount a dirty war of terror on the people of Syria?

It can’t be rationalized–it is beyond reproach and stinks to high heaven. Bush, Cheney, Obama, Clinton, Biden, Kerry, Republican, Democrat, conservative, liberal, neocon, neoliberal–I don’t care what face or name you put upon it, it’s dead wrong. Let’s not contort reality in order to play partisan politics in the good ole usa. Face up to it Democrats–when push comes to shove turns out you have become “Bush”– just like Caitlin says.

Is there a principled politician in the house? The silence is deafening…and all too deadly.

From Caitlin’s article: “And they argued right back, often on the grounds that the Iraq invasion wasn’t as bad as I was making it out to be.” That kinda set me off Bob. From the perspective of a mother who suffered a child dying in agony from severe shrapnel wounds or women giving birth to severely deformed babies from the effects of depleted uranium…and so on…it was very bad and very tragic. We must fight to expose the nefarious reasons for these wars (and the lies used for their “justification”) while never losing sight of the very real human consequences and sufferings they entail.
Our foremost concern at CN should be to give America and the world a robust antiwar movement…to carry a torch for Robert Parry who hated war and gave his life to the pursuit of truth and justice.

The onset of the Obama administration coincided with the release of brain-shrinking toxins into the nation’s drinking water supply. Or with the introduction of a secret program using cel phones to release brain-shrinking vapours. I’m not sure which, or know if either actually happened – but how else to explain the disintegration of critical thinking skills amongst so many otherwise intelligent progressive-leaning persons?

Most people just want things to return to being “normal”, but there has been no normal since the Supreme Court put W in the White House 17 long years ago. “Normal” is not coming back either, one reason why critical thinking skills are vital in this moment. Avoid the MSM.

at how hard the instructor (he’s excellent) has to work to draw any sort of “why ?”
questions out of the students. (The course is on Russian Economic Geography,
so at least it’s a good thing that young people are taking it !)

I’m a little baffled by all of these people and this Russian thing, even more so when Kennedy did hs after the SOTU speech, Has he forgotten that his Dad was caught Red-handed passing notes to the former KGB asking for their help to prevent Reagan from being elected?.

Being a republican or a democrat is equivalent to wearing a stupidity badge.

Oh, so true, and I’ve seen it first hand. I’ve seen democrats, even before Trump was elected, excuse Bush by saying there were weapons of mass destruction and the reason we couldn’t find them was Saddam got them out of the country before they could be found. Educated people rewriting such recent history in their heads was at first surprising, but no more, and the argument that he wasn’t the horror he was is indeed a way of justifying Obama and Clinton’s militarism. It makes perfect sense.

Having Caitlin Johnstone contribute to ‘the Consortium’ is a breath of happiness to a Legendary Truth Teller’s honorable legacy, as to rival the MSM narrative to bring the finale of a story to it’s honest end.

“What they never, ever like to do is acknowledge the far more uncomfortable fact that as bad as Trump is, he also still hasn’t done anything as bad as what the Obama administration did to Libya.”

Bingo Ms. Johnstone. I see your political thoughts and musings are always right on target, as usual.

Thank you so much for ascertaining the truth and putting it out there for all to see.

    • February 4, 2018 at 09:57

Really not so much truth as an opinion. Truth comes with citations and links. Sure we get a single poll…but didn’t all kinds of polls all tell us Hillary would be the first women president? I get around some and I really don’t know anyone who has decided to give Bush a pass on Iraq, even now that Trumpkin is president. I have heard people say “you know, Bush’s paintings arent nearly as bad as you’d think” and of course the same people who used to joke about missing Nixon during the Bush years have joked that they miss bush- this is black humor because since millions were killed in SE Asia,Nixon nearly nuked Hanoi, he ran Cointelpro with Pine Ridge and Fred Hampton ect ect. People who say that Trumpkin makes them miss Bush are only talking about the more superficial aspects of our current administration…the (certainly artificial) appearance of rationality.

I voted for Clinton because Trump threatened a war against Iran. If you think he’s not in the process of carrying out that threat, you”re not as woke as you pretend to be.

Hillary threatened to “obliterate” Iran. What’s the difference?

The difference is the nuclear agreement with Iran, which Clinton supported and Trump threatened to break. He’s carrying out that threat.

Sorry Robert, that’s not good enough.

HIlary threatened Iran with violence, in a vile and terrifying manner. Trump is using nonviolent means (ostensibly) to prevent Iran from acquiring Nukes. Hilary is worse.

          • February 4, 2018 at 09:16

Sorry Pumpkin, but thats’ not good enough. Trumpkin threatened North Korea with Nuclear weapons. Trumpkin is worse because he’s actual;y president while Hillary now hawks her maudlin memoir.

And please – Robert & all the rest of the Hillary apologists, do NOT forget what she did (with Obama’s subservience) to HONDURAS. The democratically-elected Zelaya administration was regime-changed by Hillary & the CFR. They installed their pal, bankster-ghoul Porfirio Lobo ‘Pepe’ Sosa:

            http://a54.idata.over-blog.com/2/48/74/19/Porfirio-Lobo-et-Hilary-Clinton.jpg

And the CIA death squads got busy – resulting in the cold-blooded murder, at night, in-her-bed, of Honduran patriot Berta Cáceres.

Trumpkins is hideous but nothing compared to blood-dripping-from-fangs Killary and her CIA/CFR overlords.

      January 31, 2018 at 18:31

      Nice try.

Killary would have obliterated Tehran within the first year of her warmongering administration. She was totally in bed with the Zionist power configuration and sociopathic militarists. During the televised debates she actually advocated for a no-fly zone in Syria! This of course would have put Washington on the brink of nuclear war with Russia.

Trump’s awful (I voted for Jill Stein) but he hasn’t reached the malevolence of outright invading and annihilating an entire country like Bush jr did to Iraq and Obama/Killary did to Libya. Could Trump reach this level, perhaps, we’ll see. But with Killary, Tehran would be a wasteland right now, with Trump the anti-war movement might have a small chance. With Killary much of the anti-war movement would have been co-opted and barely would have raised a peep when the first woman president decided to commit a war crime in the service of the Saudi-Zio Terror Network.

Yes, there’s a good chance Trump destroys the Persian state, but we have a chance to stop it. With Killary the destruction would have been done by now.

Maybe Clinton would have been have been as bloody in Yemen as Trump has been. But it is sickening that these so-called “anti-war” people, can pretend that what we are doing in Yemen is not happening,. . . ” The destruction of an entire nation killing tens of thousands of people and creating a failed state” is precisely what is happening there.

Hillary did the same, plus more, like Syria, Yemen and others.
And he actually went through with sick stuff like that before and then acted as if its something to be proud of.

I dont know where you get your “facts”, but you have been fooled massively.

    • February 1, 2018 at 16:12

Hillary wanted to impose a no fly zone in Syria which Joint chief of Staff at the time General Joseph Dunford stated in response to a republican neocon congressmen’s question on why not impose a no fly zone ” Imposing a no fly zone would entail going to war against Russia and Syria. I am not prepared to make that decision.” Her pick for national security advisor a fella by the name of Morrill quoted in an interview that “Our armed servicemen should be killing Russians just don’t let the Russians know we are going to attack them.” Clinton also was reported to be in favor of choosing Victoria Nuland the neocon brain child behind the Ukraine Coup as her secretary of state. Trump at least campaigned on ending regime change wars and colaborating with Russia and China where our shared interests align. By the way I voted for Jill Stein who many HRC supporters now call a Putin apologist.

      • February 4, 2018 at 09:31

Freedom lover: can you find that quote by “Morrill for me? My admittedly short google search has come up empty;perhaps you have misspelled?.

          • February 5, 2018 at 15:10

Thanks I had his name spelled wrong

          • February 6, 2018 at 10:10

But Morells didn’t say our service men should be killing Russians, did he? he said we should give arms to Syrians and let them kill Russians, right? it’s a small difference if you’re the ones being killed, but a big one in terms of what Freedom Lover is trying to say here. When we armed the Mujadeen, no one said that was going to start WW3, nor did we threaten WW3 when Russians and Chinese armed South East Asians (and perhaps some Central Asians more recently) to kill American troops. Proxy wars are shitty, but try to be clear in what you’re saying or people (not many here apparently) will suspect that you’re a troll with some sort of agenda
