Israel Clears the Bench in Iran Fight

Exclusive: Israel in its desperation to kill the Iran nuclear deal is exposing its often-denied influence over the U.S. political/media process. Israeli officials are even using football analogies to rally U.S. lawmakers while emptying the bench of friendly “experts” to mount a goal-line stand, writes Robert Parry.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer, acting like the coach of a football team, instructed congressional Republicans to “leave everything on the field” in the fight to defeat the international agreement with Iran over its nuclear energy program, a sign of how openly Israel now feels it controls the GOP.

Israel wants the Iran deal killed so it can keep open options for bombing Iran and imposing “regime change.” And, immediately after Dermer’s locker-room-style pep talk, Republican members of Congress began falling into line, lashing out at Secretary of State John Kerry and other senior officials who negotiated the agreement reached earlier this month between six world powers and Iran.

House Speaker John Boehner announced that he would “do everything possible to stop” the deal. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker told Kerry that he’d been “fleeced.” Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican candidate for president, said the next president presumably meaning himself if he’s successful could overturn the deal because it’s not a binding treaty.

All this was remarkable even to The New York Times, which usually looks the other way when Israel flexes its muscles in Official Washington. A Times article by Jonathan Weisman noted the extraordinary image of the Israeli ambassador using sports analogies to rile up Republican congressmen to overturn a key foreign policy initiative of the U.S. president.

“Mr. Dermer’s plea, which is widely expected to be followed by a mail, television and radio assault in Democratic districts during the August recess, demonstrates the power that the Israeli government and supportive interest groups in Washington maintain over congressional Republicans,” Weisman wrote.

Obviously, some of this Republican opposition is driven by a deep-seated animus toward President Barack Obama, but the confidence that Dermer, a onetime aide to former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich, showed in rallying Republicans to Israel’s foreign policy priority of hostility toward Iran reveals the degree to which the GOP as a party now ties its agenda in the Mideast to Israel.

Connections between Republicans and right-wing Israelis have grown tighter since the presidency of George W. Bush who began implementing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s strategy of “regime change” against countries on his enemies list, starting with Iraq in 2003. Since then, wealthy Israeli backers, such as casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, have funneled huge sums of money into Republican campaigns. In 2012, Netanyahu virtually endorsed GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney. And, on March 3, House Speaker Boehner invited Netanyahu to deliver a speech to a joint session of Congress that was remarkable in its overt appeal to American lawmakers to embrace Israel’s foreign policy regarding Iran over the head of the sitting U.S. president.

Clearing the Bench

In its current pull-out-all-the-stops to show who controls the U.S. political/media process, Israel also is throwing other key assets into this high-stakes fight. For instance, Steven Emerson, who has long posed as a professional journalist and then as a terrorism expert, was a featured speaker at a Times Square rally urging not only death to the nuclear deal but death to Iran.

“So now we have the situation that unless Congress acts, I believe ultimately, it’s going to be left up to a military strike to take out the Iranian capabilities to take out the world,” Emerson told a cheering crowd of a couple of thousand. “If we don’t take out Iran, they will take out us. Because if you don’t your children will never forgive you never forgive you for not protecting this country from a holocaust. For not protecting the state of Israel from a holocaust that will occur assuredly just as it did 70 years ago.

“Rarely in our lives do we have an opportunity to change history. Now is the time to do it, and it’s your responsibility all of ours, to go do it.”

Earlier this year, Emerson, who has longstanding close ties to right-wing Israeli officials, was caught in a blatant falsehood and slur about British Muslims. Appearing on Fox News as a “terrorism expert,” he claimed that Birmingham, England, is now a “Muslim-only city” and that in parts of London “Muslim religious police beat and actually wound seriously anyone who doesn’t dress according to religious Muslim attire.”

Emerson asserted that Muslim areas have become “no-go zones” for non-Muslims and cited as an example “actual cities like Birmingham that are totally Muslim, where non-Muslims just simply don’t go in.” Yet, Birmingham, Great Britain’s second-largest city of more than one million people, is nearly half Christian, with the Muslim population less than one-quarter and with significant numbers of Sikhs, Hindus, Jews and non-religious.

As Emerson’s Muslim-bashing remarks drew criticism from the media watchdog group FAIR and ridicule across the United Kingdom, he acknowledged that his “comments about Birmingham were totally in error” and vowed not to blame someone else for his slander.

“I do not intend to justify or mitigate my mistake by stating that I had relied on other sources because I should have been much more careful,” Emerson said in an apparent attempt to do exactly that, shift the blame to some unnamed source for supposedly misleading him. The heated debate over the Iran nuclear deal is bringing out of the woodwork other longstanding alarmists about Iran’s nuclear program, which has not produced a single bomb, even as some of these same “experts” have studiously ignored the reality of Israel’s rogue nuclear arsenal.

For instance, David Albright, the president of the Institute for Science and International Security (with the now unfortunate acronym ISIS), is back in the pages of the mainstream media warning about possible gaps in the Iranian nuclear deal.

Albright was sought out for comment by the Times’ neocon national security writer Michael R. Gordon, who co-authored the infamous “aluminum tube” story in 2002 that was used to frighten Americans about “mushroom clouds” if they didn’t support an invasion of Iraq. On Thursday, Gordon’s latest story quoting Albright was entitled, online, “Verification Process in Iran Deal Is Questioned by Some Experts.”

An Iraq War Reunion

At times, this Israeli-driven battle to stop the Iran deal almost seems like a reunion of discredited journalists and “experts” who helped guide the United States into the disastrous Iraq War. In 2002, around the same time Gordon, along with Judith Miller, was penning his “aluminum tube” story, Albright and his ISIS were key figures in stoking the hysteria for invading Iraq around other false allegations of its WMD program.

At the end of summer 2002, as Bush was beginning his advertising roll-out for the Iraq invasion and dispatching his top aides to the Sunday talk shows to cite Gordon’s “aluminum tube” article and warn about “smoking guns” and “mushroom clouds,” Albright co-authored a Sept. 10, 2002, article entitled “Is the Activity at Al Qaim Related to Nuclear Efforts?” which declared:

“High-resolution commercial satellite imagery shows an apparently operational facility at the site of Iraq’s al Qaim phosphate plant and uranium extraction facility This site was where Iraq extracted uranium for its nuclear weapons program in the 1980s. This image raises questions about whether Iraq has rebuilt a uranium extraction facility at the site, possibly even underground. The uranium could be used in a clandestine nuclear weapons effort.”

Albright’s alarming allegations fit neatly with Bush’s propaganda barrage, although as the months wore on with Bush’s warnings about aluminum tubes and yellowcake from Africa growing more outlandish Albright did display more skepticism about the existence of a revived Iraqi nuclear program. Still, he remained a “go-to” expert on other Iraqi purported WMD, such as chemical and biological weapons. In a typical quote on Oct. 5, 2002, Albright told CNN: “In terms of the chemical and biological weapons, Iraq has those now.”

After Bush launched the Iraq invasion in March 2003 and Iraq’s secret WMD caches didn’t materialize, Albright admitted that he had been conned, explaining to the Los Angeles Times: “If there are no weapons of mass destruction, I’ll be mad as hell. I certainly accepted the administration claims on chemical and biological weapons. I figured they were telling the truth. If there is no [unconventional weapons program], I will feel taken, because they asserted these things with such assurance.” [See FAIR’s “The Great WMD Hunt,”]

Albright may have been “mad as hell” for being “taken” but he suffered little, especially compared to the nearly 4,500 U.S. soldiers who died in Iraq and the hundreds of thousands of slain Iraqis, not to mention the millions of others who have suffered from the chaos that the likes of Emerson, Gordon and Albright helped unleash across the Middle East.

In recent years, Albright and his institute have adopted a similarly alarmist role regarding Iran and its purported pursuit of a nuclear weapon, even though U.S. intelligence agencies say Iran terminated that weapons project in 2003.

Nevertheless, Albright transformed his organization into a sparkplug for a new confrontation with Iran. Though Albright insists that he is an objective professional, his ISIS has published hundreds of articles about Iran, which has not produced a single nuclear bomb, while barely mentioning Israel’s hundreds of bombs.

An examination of the ISIS Web site reveals only a few technical articles relating to Israel’s nukes while Albright’s ISIS expanded its coverage of Iran’s nuclear program so much that it was moved onto a separate Web site. The articles have not only hyped developments in Iran but also have attacked U.S. media critics who questioned the fear-mongering about Iran.

A couple of years ago when a non-mainstream journalist confronted Albright about the disparity between his institute’s concentration on Iran and de minimis coverage of Israel, he angrily responded that he was working on a report about Israel’s nuclear program. But there is still no substantive assessment of Israel’s large nuclear arsenal on the ISIS Web site, which goes back to 1993.

Despite this evidence of bias, mainstream U.S. news outlets typically present Albright as a neutral analyst. They also ignore his checkered past, including his prominent role in promoting President Bush’s pre-invasion case that Iraq possessed stockpiles of WMD.

However, since Albright and these other propagandists/operatives were never held accountable for the Iraq catastrophe, they are now rushing back into the game to try to block the Iran nuclear deal and potentially turn the ball over in pursuit of another Mideast war. Netanyahu and his team appear to be clearing the bench for a goal-line stand.

    The consequences of a bad deal with Iran

    If diplomacy and sanctions have failed to stop Iran, diplomacy alone will fail worse. Like it or not, we now face this unpleasant reality: Iran probably will violate the deal; it may not be detected doing so and if detected, it will not be deterred by “snapback” sanctions. So we return to the hard question: Are we prepared to do what will be necessary to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons?

    Obama most certainly is not, which means the spotlight today is on Israel.

    If Israel strikes, there will be no general Middle East war, despite fears to the contrary. We know this because no general war broke out when Israel attacked Saddam Hussein’s Osirak reactor in 1981, or when it attacked the North Korean-built Syrian reactor in 2007. Neither Saudi Arabia nor other oil-producing monarchies wanted those regimes to have nuclear weapons, and they certainly do not want Iran to have them today.

    However, Iran may well retaliate. At that point, Washington must be ready to immediately resupply Israel for losses incurred by its armed forces in the initial attack, so that Israel will still be able to effectively counter Tehran’s proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah, which will be its vehicles for retaliation. The United States must also provide muscular political support, explaining that Israel legitimately exercised its inherent right of self-defense. Whatever Obama’s view, public and congressional support for Israel will be overwhelming.

    American weakness has brought us to this difficult moment. While we obsessed about its economic discomfort, Iran wore its duress with pride. It was never an even match. We now have to rely on a tiny ally to do the job for us. But unless we are ready to accept a nuclear Iran (and, in relatively short order, several other nuclear Middle Eastern states), get ready. The easy ways out disappeared long ago.

    Back in January, Glick was on Netanyahu’s short list for a Likud Knesset seat. Apparently sober heads prevailed, understanding that such an appointment would have made it awkward for Glick to instruct US lawmakers.

    Glick is the Senior Fellow for Middle East Affairs of the Center for Security Policy, Washington, DC-based run by the delusional Frank Gaffney. Gaffney held the position of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear Forces and Arms Control Policy in the Reagan Administration, serving under Richard Perle. In April 1987, Gaffney was nominated to the position of US Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy. He served as the acting Assistant Secretary for seven months, though his confirmation was ultimately blocked by the United States Senate.

    “Bibi’s brain” Ron Dermer knows all about Republican and Likud (is there really any difference?) right-wing political playbooks.

    In 1994, Dermer took a job under Frank Luntz, a pollster best known for developing Republican and pro-Israel talking points, to help design Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America.

    In 1995, Dermer helped manage Natan Sharansky’s Yisrael b’Aliyah 1996 Knesset election campaign. In 1996 Dermer moved to Israel, and in 1997, he began the process of becoming an Israeli citizen.

    Dermer worked as a political consultant for Sharansky’s 1999 campaign, and from January 2001 for nearly three years he wrote a column “The Numbers Game” for The Jerusalem Post.

    In 2004, Dermer and Sharansky co-wrote the best-selling book The Case For Democracy: The Power of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny and Terror, famously endorsed by then US-President George W. Bush. At that time, Sharansky was chair of a secret committee that approved the confiscation of East Jerusalem property of West Bank Palestinians. This decision was reversed after an outcry from the Israeli left and the international community. resigned from the cabinet in April 2005 to protest plans to withdraw Israeli settlements from the Gaza Strip and northern West Bank.

    In 2005, while Benjamin Netanyahu served as Finance Minister under Ariel Sharon, Dermer was appointed economic envoy at the Israeli embassy in Washington, a post for which he had to give up his American citizenship.

    In 2008, after his return to Israel, Dermer became adviser to Netanyahu, who became Israel’s prime minister in April 2009.

    Dermer is considered Netanyahu’s closest adviser and strategic consultant. According to The Jerusalem Post, he “runs much of the interference with the White House, and is intimately involved in the diplomatic process with the Palestinians, [… and] writes many of Netanyahu’s speeches”.

    Israeli newspaper Makor Rishon reported on December 28, 2012 that Dermer’s name was being floated as a potential replacement for Michael Oren, Israel’s Ambassador to the United States. The Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment on the report and the Embassy of Israel in Washington spokesman called the report “baseless.”

    In March 2013, Dermer left the Prime Minister’s Office after four years as Netanyahu’s senior adviser.

    On July 9, 2013 the Prime Minister’s office announced that Dermer would replace Oren as Israel’s ambassador to the United States. According to the Israeli daily Haaretz, Oren, who wanted to keep his job, was removed because Dermer wanted the envoy post.

    According to Ari Shavit, a Senior Correspondent at the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Dermer is one of the few people Prime Minister Netanyahu trusts enough for the job, and Dermer’s understanding of the American political system gives Netanyahu a way to navigate through Washington.

    According to Barak Ravid at Haaretz, Dermer is suspected by key White House aides Denis McDonough and Ben Rhodes of lobbying members of Congress against President Barack Obama’s positions.

    In January 2015 the Israeli Civil Service Commission censured Dermer for taking part in political campaigning for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in violation of Civil Service rules.

    The U. S. Administration took the unusual step of sharply criticizing the ambassador, after he played a key role in having Benjamin Netanyahu invited, without White House knowledge, to address Congress on Iran, in what the Administration regards as a breach of protocol. A spokesman said that the ambassador repeatedly put Netanyahu’s political interests before those of the relationship between Israel and the United States.

      Secretary of State James A. Baker is surely one of the most reviled public figures both in Israel and among American Jews. In 1991 he became the first American official to negotiate directly and officially with Palestinians and the first senior U.S. official to leverage American aid to Israel in an attempt to halt Israeli settlements. He played a leading role in forcing Israel to attend the Madrid Peace Conference (October 1991), which ultimately failed to yield results, and he sought to launch a second Mideast peace initiative, the “Madrid 2 Conference,” while excluding Israel from participating.

      He demanded that Israel negotiate with a Palestinian delegation consisting of Palestinians deported from East Jerusalem and the West Bank, and he publicly supported the Palestinian “right of return,” which would effectively end the Jewish state. Throughout his tenure, he did whatever possible to create distance between the Bush administration and Israel when it came to the Palestinians and the Israeli “occupation” of the territories.

      While testifying before the House in June 1990, a frustrated Baker, complaining about the “hawkishness” of Israel’s new government, sent a public message to Prime Minister Shamir: “Here’s the White House phone number; when you’re serious about peace, give us a call.” He referred to pro-Israel supporters in Congress as “the little Knesset.”

      But undoubtedly the greatest manifestation of his antipathy was his infamous declaration: “[Expletive] the Jews. They don’t vote for us (GOP) anyway.” This story was reported in the New York Post by Marianne Goldstein and several of her colleagues under the headline “Baker’s 4-Letter Slam at U.S. Jews.” (It’s interesting to note that, notwithstanding the overt animosity implicit in Baker’s profanity, his allegation regarding Jewish voting was essentially correct: running against Michael Dukakis in the 1988 presidential lection, Bush had won only 27 percent of the Jewish vote; thanks in part to Baker, that number shrank four years later to only 15 percent against Bill Clinton.)

      The assassination of Israeli Prime Minister and Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin was the culmination of Israeli right-wing dissent over the Oslo peace process. Rabin, despite his extensive service in the Israeli military, was disparaged personally by right-wing conservatives and Likud leaders who perceived the Oslo peace process as an attempt to forfeit the occupied territories.

      National religious conservatives and Likud party leaders believed that withdrawing from any "Jewish" land was heresy. Rallies, organized partially by Likud, became increasingly extreme in tone. Likud leader (and future Prime Minister) Benjamin Netanyahu accused Rabin's government of being "removed from Jewish tradition … and Jewish values." Netanyahu addressed protesters of the Oslo movement at rallies where posters portrayed Rabin in a Nazi SS uniform or being the target in the cross-hairs of a sniper.[1] Rabin accused Netanyahu of provoking violence, a charge which Netanyahu strenuously denied.[2]

        The political and religious right, led by Bibi Netanyahu, launches a huge anti-Rabin campaign. Posters of Rabin in S.S. uniform and public statements by prominent rabbis that Rabin is a traitor and should be eliminated — basically a Jewish fatwa — pop up in newspapers, poster boards and demonstrations.

        The culmination of the anti-Rabin campaign was the Likud rally in Zion Square, Jerusalem in October 1995, less than a month before the assassination. From the speakers’ balcony Netanyahu and the Likud leadership could easily hear the masses chanting “in blood and fire we shall do away with Rabin”, “he’s a traitor!” and “death to Rabin”. Many demonstrators carry signs depicting Rabin wearing a kafiah (eluding to Arafat) and in S.S. uniform.

        Likud leaders, from the balcony, call for the ousting of the ‘Quisling’ government (after the WWII Norwegian traitor). Netanyahu claims that Rabin’s government is based on a non-Zionist majority – the five Arab MKs associated with the PLO.

        Rabin counteracts with a pro-peace rally in Tel Aviv, at the very square that would eventually bear his name. Minutes after the last chord of ‘Song for Peace’, which ended the rally, Rabin is shot to death by Yigal Amir, a right-wing activist and follower of a rabbi that called for Rabin’s elimination.

        In the aftermath of the assassination, the right’s mea culpa was drowned by the voices that called for understanding, bridging and healing. “Now is not the time to point fingers, we need to first dress the wounds”.

        But the time to assign blame never came. Within a few months Israel was mired in another round of fighting in Lebanon, and soon after Likud took the reins. The lessons were never learned, and the mere commemoration of Rabin became a political matter.

    Dear Mr Parry,

    There is a scene in the film ” No Country for Old Men ” that reminds me, in so many ways,of the tactics Mr Netanyahu and his benefactors are using not merely to “derail “the Iran deal, but how the Iran crisis itself has been generated to derail the Israel/Palestine peace process altogether.

    In the film,Javier Bardem, plays a sociopathic assassin, hired by drug dealers to hunt down a cowboy (played by Josh Brolin) who has taken two million dollars in a satchel, he found at the scene of a drug deal gone bad.
    Bardem’s character is wounded the night before the scene occurs, in a gunfight with Brolin’s ,that allows Brolin to escape with the money.

    The scene begins with Bardem, on a nice calm sunny day, walking(actually limping from the wound to his leg) down a sidewalk of the town where the altercation had occurred the night before. He stops in front of a Pharmacy…he pulls a wad of cotton balls from the bag he is carrying and stuffs them into the gas tank of the automobile parked in front of the store….He drenches them with gasoline…Then retrieves them with a thin wire and places them over a small piece of cardboard where the gas cap is supposed to be….and lights it on fire.
    He then proceeds to enter the pharmacy, he gets about 20 feet into the store…when the automobile explodes into a ball of flame !…..Everyone in the store, including the pharmacists rush out to see what has occurred…..Bardem uses the moment of crisis as an opportunity to hop behind the counter and steal assorted medical equipment and drugs he needs to treat his wounded leg. He gets away with it.

    The exploding automobile outside the pharmacy serves as a” tactic of terror”, staged by Bardem’s character, to deflect attention away from his REAL objective…..to steal the medical supplies from the pharmacy.

    In much the same way the exploding “Iran Nuclear crisis” serves as a” tactic of terror”, staged by Mr Netanyahu, to deflect attention away from his REAL objective….to steal nearly all the Palestinian Territories and the Golan Heights !

    Mr Netanyahu shrill depictions of a Nuclear Holocaust over Israel and the emergency alarm sent out to world Jewry and us , its american compatriots, has successfully headed off the mounting pressure from the P5 +1 and the Obama administration,in its first term directive- to resolve the Israel/Palestine conflict once and for all through implementation of the two-state solution !

In addition there must be exercised a “just resolution” to the Palestinian refugees crisis.

    Were Israel forthcoming in its desire for a “just” peace, and actively seeking to resolve the disputes surrounding the aforementioned territories with the utmost integrity ,all the shrill exhortations of “existential threats” posed by Iran , Syria , and Palestinian “terror”, might have a REAL weight to it !

    You could take them seriously!

    But given Israel’s continued expansionist desire to devour more Palestinian land, its brutal,near exterminatory, treatment of the Palestinians in Gaza, and its desire to destabilize and shatter Syria’s territorial integrity through the civil strife of ” engineered regime change” …

    The” Bluster” on Iran, has lost all its legitimacy!

    I’m not trying to sidetrack the thread, but the issue of the Red Cross has come up twice already, and it caused me to make a cursory investigation of the organization during WW2.

    From 1938 to 1944 (when he died) Norman Davis was president of the Red Cross. He was from Tennessee, and perhaps for that reason ran the Red Cross with a definite racist slant. Under his leadership, the Red Cross refused to accept Negro blood until 1942, and even then it was kept separate from white blood. So the man was deeply ‘conservative’, and at that time this often carried over to Jews. I was unable to find what religion Davis espoused, but since the Red Cross later ran “Rat Lines” paralleling that of the Vatican to help Nazis escape, perhaps he was not unlike the Pope of the day in his views about Nazis and Jews.

    Fast forward to the present day. Turns out that the Red Cross has been doing some “I’m sorry” drills about its behavior during WW2. Like with the Vatican of the day, it used lip glue about the Holocaust, and also seems to have done all it could to minimize that event by selecting documents to demonstrate how the Nazi genocide was a trivial affair.

    The Senator pointedly didn’t say the same for Israel’s public relations campaign. He’s totally in bed with the shitty little apartheid nation.

    As another indication of this, though he was “saddened” by the “civilian deaths” in Gaza, that conflict was 100% the fault of Hamas. The ‘civilians’ got what they deserved because they elected Hamas, and poor little Israel was merely defending itself.

        “take out” Iran at no cost (in lives etc.) to the helpless Israeli’s.

        As many observers have pointed out, should Israel working
        as it seems through the Republican party “kill” the Iran deal,
        it will itself be the ultimate losers. As Israel has always known,
        they have only been able to defy international law and the
        international consensus by absurdly counting the US as
        “mediator”. Using the single nation which supports Israel
        as a “dishonest broker.”

        Should the US back out of a deal it has agreed to with Russia,
        China, the UK, France and Germany it would lose any
        power of persuasion in the future. As analyst Pepe Escobar
        has recently pointed out Iran will join the SCO(Shangai
        Cooperative Organization) as a full member.

        (Incidentally, many nations are eschewing the US’s so-called
        “helping hand”. The SCO already embraces half the
        nations on the planet.)

        There is nothing Israel can do at this point. They have
        lost. Perhaps they should withdraw entirely from the UN
        whose condemnations they have never paid any
        attention to.

        Bullshit!!!!!!!!
        There is NO head count the redcrosss records are sealed!!!!!
        Most died of dissentarry and starvation due to the supply lines being cut off.
        How many died in Rhine Meadows death camps and civilian bombing such as Dresdin?
