The World Rebukes Netanyahu

Exclusive: Led by President Obama, six world powers ignored Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s harangues against Iran and agreed to a plan for limiting not bombing Iran’s nuclear program. But Netanyahu wields more sway with Congress and the mainstream media, which parrot his complaints, writes Robert Parry.

In a rare rebuke to his bullying, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to stop the United States and five other world powers from reaching an agreement to constrain but not eliminate Iran’s nuclear program. Yet, Netanyahu still is dominating how the U.S. public and congressional debate is being framed, with Iran accused of regional “aggression” in four countries.

On Tuesday, a recurring theme on U.S. news broadcasts, such as Andrea Mitchell’s MSNBC program, was that any lifting of economic sanctions against Iran will give it more money to engage in trouble-making in the Middle East with references to four nations Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen a central theme in Netanyahu’s speech on March 3 to a joint session of the U.S. Congress.

To repeated standing ovations from U.S. senators and congressmen, Netanyahu declared: “In the Middle East, Iran now dominates four Arab capitals, Baghdad, Damascus, Beirut and Sanaa. And if Iran’s aggression is left unchecked, more will surely follow. So, at a time when many hope that Iran will join the community of nations, Iran is busy gobbling up the nations. We must all stand together to stop Iran’s march of conquest, subjugation and terror.”

Netanyahu’s reference to “Iran’s aggression,” which is now becoming a conventional-wisdom talking point in Official Washington, was curious since Iran has not invaded another country for centuries. In 1980, Saddam Hussein’s Iraq at the urging of Saudi Arabia invaded Iran. But Iran has not invaded any of the four countries that Netanyahu cited.

One of Netanyahu’s citations of Arab cities supposedly conquered by Iran was particularly strange: Baghdad, which is the capital of Iraq where the U.S. military invaded in 2003 to overthrow Saddam Hussein and his Sunni-dominated government, on Netanyahu’s recommendation. In other words, Iraq was conquered not by Iranian “aggression” but by U.S. aggression with the support of Israel.

After the Iraq invasion, President George W. Bush installed a Shiite-dominated government which then developed friendly ties to Iran’s Shiite government. So, whatever influence Iran has in Baghdad is the result of a U.S. invasion that Netanyahu personally encouraged.

More recently, Iran has helped the embattled Iraqi government in its struggle against the murderous Islamic State militants who seized large swaths of Iraqi territory last summer. Indeed, Iraqi officials have credited Iran with playing a crucial role in blunting the Islamic State, the terrorists whom President Barack Obama has identified as one of the top security threats facing the United States.

So, in the current Iraqi fight against the head-chopping Islamic State, Iran and the United States are on the same side. Yet, Netanyahu calls Iran’s help “aggression” and American talking heads repeat that refrain.

Netanyahu also cited Damascus, where Iran has aided the Syrian government in its struggle against the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front. That means that Iran is assisting the internationally recognized government of Syria hold off two major terrorist organizations. By contrast, Israel and Saudi Arabia have provided direct and indirect help at least to Nusra. [See Consortiumnews.com’s “Did Money Seal Israel-Saudi Alliance?”]

The Israeli prime minister also mentioned Beirut, Lebanon, and Sanaa, Yemen, but those were rather bizarre references, too, since Lebanon is governed by a multi-ethnic arrangement that includes a number of religious and political factions. Hezbollah is one and it has close ties to Iran, but it is stretching the truth to say that Iran “dominates” Beirut or Lebanon.

Similarly, in Sanaa, the Houthis, a Shiite-related sect, have taken control of Yemen’s capital and have reportedly received some help from Iran, but the Houthis deny those reports and are clearly far from under Iranian control. The Houthis also have vowed to work with the Americans to carry on the fight against Yemen’s Al-Qaeda affiliate, which has benefitted from a brutal Saudi bombing campaign against Houthi targets, an act of real aggression that has killed hundreds of civilians and provoked a humanitarian crisis.

Indeed, Iran and these various Shiite-linked movements have been among the most effective in battling Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, while Israel’s Saudi friends have been repeatedly linked to funding and supporting these Sunni terrorist organizations.

So, there is little truth and much exaggeration to Netanyahu’s depiction of what is going on in the Middle East. Yet, the U.S. mainstream media mindlessly reprises Netanyahu’s falsehood about Iran “gobbling up” nations.

    Netanyahu walks in the footprints of the long line of Zionist Prime Ministers, all of which (with the possible exception of the one, {whose name escapes me} assassinated by a right wing zealot) are driven by the belief of their Divine Right of Return to their own Promised Land. In that sense, Bibi is fulfilling a long line of succession including the brutal tactician and equally vehement, Ariel Sharon.
    I’m amazed and fascinated by the fact that Sharon died of a stroke in 2006 but laid in a vegetative state, on a vent, a full 8, EIGHT years… What were they thinking?!! Were they ‘expecting a miracle’??!

    In 1937, Winston Churchill said of the Palestinians, I quote, “I do not agree that the dog in a manger has the final right to the manger even though he may have lain there for a very long time. I do not admit that right. I do not admit for instance, that a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America or the black people of Australia. I do not admit that a wrong has been done to these people by the fact that a stronger race, a higher-grade race, a more worldly wise race to put it that way, has come in and taken their place.”

    That set the trend for the Israeli State’s attitude towards the Palestinians.
    In 1969, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir said, “Palestinians do not exist.”

    Her successor, Prime Minister Levi Eschol said, “What are Palestinians? When I came here (to Palestine), there were 250,000 non-Jews, mainly Arabs and Bedouins. It was a desert, more than underdeveloped. Nothing.”

    Prime Minister Menachem Begin called Palestinians “two-legged beasts.”

    Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir called them “grasshoppers” who could be crushed. This is the language of Heads of State, not the words of ordinary people.

    It is presumptuous of Israel to expect the USA to not make deals in our own interests. Anti-American rhetoric is coming from Israel, and the USA has to think about things like ISIS spinning out of control. You’re going to need at least one ally against ISIS which is not on ISIS’s side, and which has some discipline. My God.

    Netanyahu is the leader of Israel and do what he feels he must there. He is not the leader of the world and his talkings about Iran do not make sense. Iran is a good and respected counterbalance/buffer of what is going on in the ME and these qualities should be enhanced for the lives of all. Iran has become the obsession of an old man.

    After 36 years, unrelenting US anti-Iranian hostility continues. Agreed on terms with Tehran belies Washington’s bottom line intention – regime change. Nothing consummated Tuesday changes things.

    Obama straightaway began selling the deal to skeptics – ludicrously saying “we have stopped the spread of nuclear weapons in this region…(T)he international community will be able to verify that the Islamic Republic of Iran will no develop a nuclear weapon” it has no intention of producing and never did.

    Nor will the deal lessen chances for greater regional war. As long as US policy calls for replacing all independent governments with regimes it controls, nations like Iran are threatened – especially with bipartisan lunatics infesting Washington.

      The Daily Show news satire functions as anti-Iran political propaganda with its endless repetition of the phrase “Iran’s nuclear program”.

      Stewart wrote and directed the 2014 film Rosewater about the 2009 incarceration by Iran of Maziar Bahari.

      Bahari, an Iranian Canadian filmaker, began reporting in Iran in 1997. In 1998, he became Newsweek magazine’s Iran correspondent. He has produced documentaries and news reports for Channel 4, BBC and other broadcasters. His films have won several awards and nominations including an Emmy in 2005.

      During the 2009 Iranian Election Protests, Bahari was arrested at his family’s home in Tehran. While incarcerated, he appeared in a televised confession (broadcast internationally by PressTV) telling his interviewer that Western journalists worked as spies; that he had covered “illegal demonstrations” and “illegal gatherings”, and was helping promote a “colour revolution”.

      His confession was dismissed by his family, his colleagues, and Reporters Without Borders, saying that it must have come under duress. Outside Iran, an international campaign to free him was headed by his wife and included petitions launched by Committee to Protect Journalists, Index on Censorship, International PEN, and groups of documentary filmmakers. US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke publicly of his case.

      After 118 days in jail and charged with 11 counts of espionage, Bahari was released on $300,000 bail. Bahari claims he was asked to promise to spy on dozens of “anti-revolutionary elements” inside and outside Iran for the Revolutionary Guard.

      Appearing on a segment of the television news program 60 Minutes and in an article in Newsweek, Bahari claimed that he was physically and psychologically torture. In interviews, Bahari stated that his interrogator told him not to talk about what happened to him in prison, as the Revolutionary Guards have “people all around the world and they can always bring me back to Iran in a bag”. Bahari has stated that he will not be able to safely return to Iran until the Islamic Republic falls.

      After his release Bahari launched a complaint against Iranian government’s English satellite channel, Press TV, for filming and airing an interview with him under duress.

      In May 2011, Ofcom upheld Bahari’s three complaints against Press TV. In the summary Ofcom said Press TV’s presentation of Bahari was unfair because it “omitted material facts and was placed in a context in which inferences adverse to Mr Bahari could be drawn”. The media regulator also said that Press TV failed to get his consent and this “contributed to the overall unfairness to Mr Bahari in the item broadcast”. Ofcom added that filming and broadcasting the interview without consent “while he was in a sensitive situation and vulnerable state was an unwarranted infringement of Mr Bahari’s privacy”.

      Upon the release of Ofcom’s findings, Press TV launched a campaign against Bahari and Ofcom. Bahari was accused of being “an MI6 contact person”. Press TV called Ofcom’s ruling “part of an anti-Iranian campaign,” and noted “A quick look at senior decision makers at Ofcom demonstrates that the regulator is mostly made up of former Channel 4 and BBC executives, some of whom are well-linked to and influenced by powerful pro-Israeli politicians.” Press TV’s failure to pay a £100,000 fine for showing Bahari’s ‘confession’ was connected with the revocation of Press TV’s licence to broadcast in the UK, via satellite, in January 2012.

      Bahari has been accused of lying in his journalistic reporting, both before and after his 2009 incarceration in Iran.

      In a notable example, in September 2008, the transcript of an interview conducted by Bahari of Akbar Etemad, the former head of Iran’s nuclear program during the Shah’s regime, was published in the New Statesman entitled “The Shah’s Plan was to Build a Bomb.”

      In this piece, Maziar Bahari wrote that Etemad had confided in him that the Shah intended to make nuclear weapons with Iran’s civilian nuclear program, the implication being that the Islamic government would do the same.

      After the interview was published, Mr. Etemad wrote a letter to the New Statesman which appeared in the print edition of the Dec 1, 2008 issue of the magazine, in which he vociferiously denied the claim attributed to him by Maziar Bahari:

      “I told Mr Bahari that I had to know what the shah had in mind regarding the nature of the nuclear programme. I also said that during a long discussion, the shah told me that Iran did not need nuclear weapons, because our strong conventional forces would guarantee our security and national interests.”

    America’s interests are not the same as Israel’s. They can’t legally be because that would mean we are biased in favor of religious and racial supremacy which is the basis of Israel’s claims to Arab lands — that is in direct conflict with our “freedom of” and “freedom from” religion concept, as well as being against international laws that we and Israel have “agreed to” or was that “agreed to violate”?

    All jokes and hipocrasy aside, we are seeing the fact that Israel wants “US” to continuously fight their pre-planned wars at our expense of blood and everything else. Without even mentioning justice we could save or pay for so many other, more worthy realities.

    Americans do need to have this debate until we stop being Israel’s enabling chumps at the entire world’s expense.

    Of course we know the MIC backs any war; it’s how they make their living. And they also want to justify their own existence even though the evidence says that their elected wars for profit are often nothing but an expense with no overall benefits. If they need a handout to get by, we should consider just giving out MIC welfare and saving all the resources, killing and general destruction that goes along with choosing to make war.

    I’m not joking. The facts behind why the US and world affairs are so chaotically violent are absurd — with the banks trying to profit off every single thing on earth, and the propagandizing media telling the public it’s patriotic to go along with self-serving US politicians running everything straight towards an inevitable abyss while propping up a religious theocracy at the expense of so much world peace — largely blaming the original Islamic victims of Zionism and anyone else that does not put “America’s interests” before their own.

    We could take half the money we give the military industrial complex and retrain some of those MIC people to do something constructive — making war is not constructive.

    Imagine what the world could accomplish without the oppressive and arresting force of corporate fascism parading around as unfettered capitalism while the most extremist of religious extremists, Zionism, has America waging wars on its behalf.

    It is funny, how we’ve looked at past history and wondered how people could have allowed certain things to go on. Now today, looking in the mirror we wonder how did we allow ourselves to be manipulated and taken advantage of the way we have by corporate and Israel’s “special” interests — and we know this is what’s going to define us in our time and is exactly what we’re leaving behind.

    Yes, America and the world needs to have this debate about Israel and their chosen belligerent aggressiveness being Americas burden to act upon.

    If all of us aren’t free then none of us are free. This is where those of us compelled as human beings go down fighting for the rights of ALL people to LIVE FREE from religious or corporate and any other tyranny imposed by man.

    I certainly agree that Netanyahu’s characterization of the behaviour of Iran is foolish.
    However, I am not sure about Parry’s claim that in aiding Iraq in the struggle agains ISIS the Iranians are in fact serving US interests or, as Parry puts it, “in the current Iraqi fight against the head-chopping Islamic State, Iran and the United States are on the same side.” The recently release DIA report indicated that the US and its Middle East allies in fact want ISIS to control large portions of Iraq and Syria. The ineffectiveness of US bombing attacks on ISIS seem to bear this out.
    Although Netanyahu’s outburst is absurd, although it collides with public statements by the US President, it may be closer to the real though unpublicized intentions of the US government than one would like to believe.

    I do wholeheartedly support diplomacy, although I have some reservations while knowing of what will becoming next. How will the U.S. respond to Russian Ambassador Lavrov’s request that now that we have an Iranian Nuclear agreement that the U.S. should dismantle some of those Eastern European missile sites. Does anyone truly believe the U.S. will even seriously consider Lavrov’s inquiry.? We should all brace ourselves for the endless saber rattling we are going to hear coming out of our American congress. Over the next 60 days congress has to ratify this treaty, and I am sure this won’t be pretty process to follow. This noise will only be drown out by Netanyahu’s screaming. Fear of a ‘false flag’ would not make you an unstable person without any cause. Mentioning Israel on this subject should make you wonder about where Saudi Arabia will end up in all of this. There are many good reasons to love this deal, and I want to feel optimistic, but I will remain alert.

    Revelation 3:9 says: ‘Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie’ to change the subject into attacking Iran and calling the BDS movement anti-Semitic. Instead of telling the truth about their own nuclear weapons and the crimes against humanity Israel committed in Gaza, the Ashkenazi Jews who control Israel continue to steal land from Palestinians, and cause dissent in America by accusing even Jews who dare to say anything against Israel of being anti-Semitic.

    Recent DNA studies of people around the world has shown that European Ashkenazi Jews are no more a Jew than most other rich White guys who are the ‘heads’ of the Money Mafia 666 UNITED STATES DOLLAR and the Euro banking system. The DNA of Sephardic Jews who have lived in Palestine since before the creation of Israel in 1948 are most closely related to Palestinians rather than European Jewish males.

That is the great ‘iniquity’ mentioned so many times in the Torah, Old Testament, and REVELATION. From the time of the ‘wall’ it is ‘seven years’ until the ‘pass over’ is completed in 2017. The ‘pass over’ by the nomad ‘GOD’ planet will be the cause of the New Madrid quake and rupture of the Mid-Atlantic rift – Earth’s ‘incurable wound’.     The time has come to remove the “missile defense” weaponry from Europe that was put there under the false pretense of protecting Europe from Iran. With that justification gone, U.S. aggression toward Russia will become damagingly apparent if this step is not taken. And the time has come for the nations that actually have nuclear weapons to join and/or comply with the nonproliferation treaty, which Iran was never actually in violation of.

    In addition to the prevention of a massive bombing campaign in Syria that was prevented in 2013, a major recent success in war-lie-preparedness is the holding off, thus far, of a U.S. war on Iran — about which we’ve been told lies for decades now. The longer this debate goes on, the more it should become clear that there is no urgent emergency that might help justify mass killing. But the longer it goes on, the more some people may accept the idea that whether or not to gratuitously bomb a foreign nation is a perfectly legitimate policy question.

    And the argument may also advance in the direction of favoring war for another reason: both sides of the debate promote most of the war lies. Yes, some peace groups are talking perfect sense on this issue as on most, but the debate between Democratic and Republican party loyalists and those in power is as follows. One side argues, quite illegally and barbarically, that because Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon, Iran should be bombed. The other side argues, counterproductively if in a seemingly civilized manner, that because Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon, a diplomatic agreement should be reached to put a stop to it. The trouble with both arguments is that they reinforce the false idea that Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon.

His article hits the mark when comparing Republican up against the Democrats rhetoric on how to deal with Iran.

    As part of a package of decisions that resulted in the indefinite extension of the nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT), the 1995 NPT Review Conference called for “the establishment of an effectively verifiable Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction, nuclear, chemical and biological, and their delivery systems.” First put forth by Egypt in 1990, the Weapons of Mass Destruction-Free Zone (WMDFZ) proposal expanded on longstanding calls to establish a Nuclear Weapons-Free Zone (NWFZ) in the Middle East. Both measures, intended to be pursued in parallel, have garnered broad international support but practical progress has since been elusive.

The draft final document called for the UN secretary-general to convene a conference by March 1, 2016, aimed at “launching a continuous process of negotiating and concluding a legally binding treaty” that establishes a WMD-free zone in the Middle East.

    NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN EURASIA

    The past several years of economic sanctions and military threats against Iran have been precisely designed to obstruct Iranian participation in Eurasian political, economic and military organizations.

    Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani attended the BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summits which took place in the Russian city of Ufa on July 8-10.

    The summits kicked off with BRICS countries agreeing to a $100bn reserve currency pool which aims to protect the member states – the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – from currency volatility shocks.

    The New Development Bank (NDB) operated by the BRICS states, an alternative to the existing US-dominated World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), held its first board of directors meeting in Ufa.

    Rouhani said that Iran was ready for enhanced cooperation and interaction with emerging economic powers following the lifting of sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

    IRAN AND SCO

    The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

    At the 2007 SCO summit Iranian Vice President Parviz Davudi addressed an initiative that has been garnering greater interest and assuming a heightened sense of urgency when he said, “The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a good venue for designing a new banking system which is independent from international banking systems”.

    The address by Putin also included these comments: “We now clearly see the defectiveness of the monopoly in world finance and the policy of economic selfishness. To solve the current problem Russia will take part in changing the global financial structure so that it will be able to guarantee stability and prosperity in the world and to ensure progress”.

    “The world is seeing the emergence of a qualitatively different geo-political situation, with the emergence of new centers of economic growth and political influence”.

    “We will witness and take part in the transformation of the global and regional security and development architectures adapted to new realities of the 21st century, when stability and prosperity are becoming inseparable notions”.

    Iran currently has observer status in the organisation, and applied for full membership on 24 March 2008. However, because of ongoing sanctions levied by the United Nations, it is blocked from admission as a new member. The SCO stated that any country under U.N. sanctions cannot be admitted.

    IRAN AND BRICS

    Five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) are distinguished by their large, fast-growing economies and significant influence on regional and global affairs; all five are G-20 members.

    As of 2014, the five BRICS countries represent almost 3 billion people which is 40% of the world population, with a combined nominal GDP of US$16.039 trillion (20% world GDP) and an estimated US$4 trillion in combined foreign reserves. As of 2014, the BRICS nations represented 18 percent of the world economy.

    At the 6th annual BRICS Summit in Fortaleza, Brazil this year, the group signed a document to create the US$100 billion New Development Bank (NDB) and a reserve currency pool worth an additional US$100 billion. Documents on cooperation between BRICS export credit agencies and an agreement of cooperation on innovation were also signed.

    A press release from the BRICS Summit stated: “We remain disappointed and seriously concerned with the current non-implementation of the 2010 International Monetary Fund (IMF) reforms, which negatively impacts on the IMF’s legitimacy, credibility and effectiveness.” Some analysts read the announcement of the NDB as a challenge to the IMF and World Bank.

    Russian President Vladimir Putin said of the summit that it sought to reduce dependency on the U.S. dollar and strengthen the rule of international law: “In the BRICS case we see a whole set of coinciding strategic interests. First of all, this is the common intention to reform the international monetary and financial system. In the present form it is unjust to the BRICS countries and to new economies in general. We should take a more active part in the IMF and the World Bank’s decision-making system. The international monetary system itself depends a lot on the US dollar, or, to be precise, on the monetary and financial policy of the US authorities. The BRICS countries want to change this.”

    OPPOSITION FROM ISRAEL

    Iran and six major world powers have reached a deal on the Iranian nuclear industry, bringing an end to a 12-year dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program and related economic sanctions. Israel remains fiercely opposed to any deal with Tehran.

          I did read on many occasions that the US has no influence over Israel whatsoever- and that is a trouble spot, and in a certain sense, that is true it seems.

          No US administration wants to have to stoop to the level of thwarting Israel. While it could, and should, it would entail a whole lot of down and dirty trench warfare so to speak, and the US would be made to pay for it, no doubt in some surprisingly dirty ways.

          Israel does only precisely what it wants to- it’s leveraged and cultivated that sweet spot over a considerable length of time in a most adroit way. It’s made a science out of manipulation.

      I did not hear anything meaningful or interesting in President Obama’s statements. Absolute, total and utter bullshit. All from the propaganda story line, uncreative and unimaginative; Iran bashing, not a single word about Israel’s stockpile of nukes, which is the “existential threat” for the whole region.

      I found it difficult to even read through what he said and I would find it impossible to watch him blabber on! What is worse is that Israel’s Prime Minister has the audacity to come on television on cue, spouting the same nonsense accusing Iran of being a threat and aggressor in the region.

      A “RUSE”, A “NON-DEAL”

      During the past months I have written in this space in many ways that
      I didn’t believe that there would be a “deal”.

      Perhaps I have been a fool. However, I agree with “Abe” as above
      that the so-called agreement is a “ruse”. Israel and its lobbies
      will sabotage it in the US Congress which they virtually own. One
      would ordinarily say “with an upcoming election cycle”. That is
      uneccessary here as they own it on a full-time basis, election or
      no.

      And of course there are always Members of Congress who revel
      in making Barack Obama fall flat on his face. Unless Obama has
      an as yet undisclosed “Plan B”, that does not seem difficult to
      do.

    there is currently a war raging in Syria on Iran’s doorstep.     Written years ago, as the US, Saudi Arabia, and Israel were already plotting to overrun Iran’s neighbor and ally Syria with Al Qaeda to weaken the Islamic Republic before inevitable war, this quote exposes fully the current charade that is the “Iran nuclear deal.”

    The West has no intention of striking any lasting deal with Iran, as nuclear capabilities, even the acquirement of nuclear weapons by Iran was never truly an existential threat to Western nations or their regional partners. The West’s issue with Iran is its sovereignty and its ability to project its interests into spheres traditionally monopolized by the US and UK across the Middle East. Unless Iran plans on turning over its sovereignty and regional influence along with its right to develop and use nuclear technology, betrayal of any “nuclear deal” is all but inevitable, as is the war that is to shortly follow.
