The Mess that Nuland Made

Exclusive: Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland engineered Ukraine’s “regime change” in early 2014 without weighing the likely chaos and consequences. Now, as neo-Nazis turn their guns on the government, it’s hard to see how anyone can clean up the mess that Nuland made, writes Robert Parry.

By Robert Parry

As the Ukrainian army squares off against ultra-right and neo-Nazi militias in the west and violence against ethnic Russians continues in the east, the obvious folly of the Obama administration’s Ukraine policy has come into focus even for many who tried to ignore the facts, or what you might call “the mess that Victoria Nuland made.”

Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs “Toria” Nuland was the “mastermind” behind the Feb. 22, 2014 “regime change” in Ukraine, plotting the overthrow of the democratically elected government of President Viktor Yanukovych while convincing the ever-gullible U.S. mainstream media that the coup wasn’t really a coup but a victory for “democracy.”

Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Victoria Nuland, who pushed for the Ukraine coup and helped pick the post-coup leaders.

Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Victoria Nuland, who pushed for the Ukraine coup and helped pick the post-coup leaders.

To sell this latest neocon-driven “regime change” to the American people, the ugliness of the coup-makers had to be systematically airbrushed, particularly the key role of neo-Nazis and other ultra-nationalists from the Right Sektor. For the U.S.-organized propaganda campaign to work, the coup-makers had to wear white hats, not brown shirts.

So, for nearly a year and a half, the West’s mainstream media, especially The New York Times and The Washington Post, twisted their reporting into all kinds of contortions to avoid telling their readers that the new regime in Kiev was permeated by and dependent on neo-Nazi fighters and Ukrainian ultra-nationalists who wanted a pure-blood Ukraine, without ethnic Russians.

Any mention of that sordid reality was deemed “Russian propaganda” and anyone who spoke this inconvenient truth was a “stooge of Moscow.” It wasn’t until July 7 that the Times admitted the importance of the neo-Nazis and other ultra-nationalists in waging war against ethnic Russian rebels in the east. The Times also reported that these far-right forces had been joined by Islamic militants. Some of those jihadists have been called “brothers” of the hyper-brutal Islamic State.

Though the Times sought to spin this remarkable military alliance neo-Nazi militias and Islamic jihadists as a positive, the reality had to be jarring for readers who had bought into the Western propaganda about noble “pro-democracy” forces resisting evil “Russian aggression.”

Perhaps the Times sensed that it could no longer keep the lid on the troubling truth in Ukraine. For weeks, the Right Sektor militias and the neo-Nazi Azov battalion have been warning the civilian government in Kiev that they might turn on it and create a new order more to their liking.

Clashes in the West

Then, on Saturday, violent clashes broke out in the western Ukrainian town of Mukachevo, allegedly over the control of cigarette-smuggling routes. Right Sektor paramilitaries sprayed police officers with bullets from a belt-fed machinegun, and police backed by Ukrainian government troops returned fire. Several deaths and multiple injuries were reported.

Tensions escalated on Monday with President Petro Poroshenko ordering national security forces to disarm “armed cells” of political movements. Meanwhile, the Right Sektor dispatched reinforcements to the area while other militiamen converged on the capital of Kiev.

While President Poroshenko and Right Sektor leader Dmitry Yarosh may succeed in tamping down this latest flare-up of hostilities, they may be only postponing the inevitable: a conflict between the U.S.-backed authorities in Kiev and the neo-Nazis and other right-wing fighters who spearheaded last year’s coup and have been at the front lines of the fighting against ethnic Russian rebels in the east.

The Ukrainian right-wing extremists feel they have carried the heaviest burden in the war against the ethnic Russians and resent the politicians living in the relative safety and comfort of Kiev. In March, Poroshenko also fired thuggish oligarch Igor Kolomoisky as governor of the southeastern province of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Kolomoisky had been the primary benefactor of the Right Sektor militias.

So, as has become apparent across Europe and even in Washington, the Ukraine crisis is spinning out of control, making the State Department’s preferred narrative of the conflict that it’s all Russian President Vladimir Putin’s fault harder and harder to sell.

How Ukraine is supposed to pull itself out of what looks like a death spiral a possible two-front war in the east and the west along with a crashing economy is hard to comprehend. The European Union, confronting budgetary crises over Greece and other EU members, has little money or patience for Ukraine, its neo-Nazis and its socio-political chaos.

America’s neocons at The Washington Post and elsewhere still rant about the need for the Obama administration to sink more billions upon billions of dollars into post-coup Ukraine because it “shares our values.” But that argument, too, is collapsing as Americans see the heart of a racist nationalism beating inside Ukraine’s new order.

Another Neocon ‘Regime Change’

Much of what has happened, of course, was predictable and indeed was predicted, but neocon Nuland couldn’t resist the temptation to pull off a “regime change” that she could call her own.

Her husband (and arch-neocon) Robert Kagan had co-founded the Project for the New American Century in 1998 around a demand for “regime change” in Iraq, a project that was accomplished in 2003 with President George W. Bush’s invasion.

As with Nuland in Ukraine, Kagan and his fellow neocons thought they could engineer an easy invasion of Iraq, oust Saddam Hussein and install some hand-picked client in Iraq, Ahmed Chalabi was to be “the guy.” But they failed to take into account the harsh realities of Iraq, such as the fissures between Sunnis and Shiites, exposed by the U.S.-led invasion and occupation.

In Ukraine, Nuland and her neocon and liberal-interventionist friends saw the chance to poke Putin in the eye by encouraging violent protests to overthrow Russia-friendly President Yanukovych and put in place a new regime hostile to Moscow.

Carl Gershman, the neocon president of the U.S.-taxpayer-funded National Endowment for Democracy, explained the plan in a Post op-ed on Sept. 26, 2013. Gershman called Ukraine “the biggest prize” and an important interim step toward toppling Putin, who “may find himself on the losing end not just in the near abroad but within Russia itself.”

For her part, Nuland passed out cookies to anti-Yanukovych demonstrators at the Maidan square, reminded Ukrainian business leaders that the U.S. had invested $5 billion in their “European aspirations,” declared “fuck the EU” for its less aggressive approach, and discussed with U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt who the new leaders of Ukraine should be. “Yats is the guy,” she said, referring to Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

Nuland saw her big chance on Feb. 20, 2014, when a mysterious sniper apparently firing from a building controlled by the Right Sektor shot and killed both police and protesters, escalating the crisis. On Feb. 21, in a desperate bid to avert more violence, Yanukovych agreed to a European-guaranteed plan in which he accepted reduced powers and called for early elections so he could be voted out of office.

But that wasn’t enough for the anti-Yanukovych forces who led by Right Sektor and neo-Nazi militias overran government buildings on Feb. 22, forcing Yanukovych and many of his officials to flee for their lives. With armed thugs patrolling the corridors of power, the final path to “regime change” was clear.

Instead of trying to salvage the Feb. 21 agreement, Nuland and European officials arranged for an unconstitutional procedure to strip Yanukovych of the presidency and declared the new regime “legitimate.” Nuland’s “guy” Yatsenyuk became prime minister.

While Nuland and her neocon cohorts celebrated, their “regime change” prompted an obvious reaction from Putin, who recognized the strategic threat that this hostile new regime posed to the historic Russian naval base at Sevastopol in Crimea. On Feb. 23, he began to take steps to protect those Russian interests.

Ethnic Hatreds

What the coup also did was revive long pent-up antagonisms between the ethnic Ukrainians in the west, including elements that had supported Adolf Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union during World War Two, and ethnic Russians in the south and east who feared the anti-Russian sentiments emanating from Kiev.

First, in Crimea and then in the so-called Donbas region, these ethnic Russians, who had been Yanukovych’s political base, resisted what they viewed as the illegitimate overthrow of their elected president. Both areas held referenda seeking separation from Ukraine, a move that Russia accepted in Crimea but resisted with the Donbas.

However, when the Kiev regime announced an “anti-terrorism operation” against the Donbas and dispatched neo-Nazi and other extremist militias to be the tip of the spear, Moscow began quietly assisting the embattled ethnic Russian rebels, a move that Nuland, the Obama administration and the mainstream news media called “Russian aggression.”

Amid the Western hysteria over Russia’s supposedly “imperial designs” and the thorough demonizing of Putin, President Barack Obama essentially authorized a new Cold War against Russia, reflected now in new U.S. strategic planning that could cost the U.S. taxpayers trillions of dollars and risk a possible nuclear confrontation.

Yet, despite the extraordinary costs and dangers, Nuland failed to appreciate the practical on-the-ground realities, much as her husband and other neocons did in Iraq. While Nuland got her hand-picked client Yatsenyuk installed and he did oversee a U.S.-demanded “neo-liberal” economic plan slashing pensions, heating assistance and other social programs the chaos that her “regime change” unleashed transformed Ukraine into a financial black hole.

With few prospects for a clear-cut victory over the ethnic Russian resistance in the east and with the neo-Nazi/Islamist militias increasingly restless over the stalemate the chances to restore any meaningful sense of order in the country appear remote. Unemployment is soaring and the government is essentially bankrupt.

The last best hope for some stability may have been the Minsk-2 agreement in February 2015, calling for a federalized system to give the Donbas more autonomy, but Nuland’s Prime Minister Yatsenyuk sabotaged the deal in March by inserting a poison pill that essentially demanded that the ethnic Russian rebels first surrender.

Now, the Ukraine chaos threatens to spiral even further out of control with the neo-Nazis and other right-wing militias supplied with a bounty of weapons to kill ethnic Russians in the east turning on the political leadership in Kiev.

In other words, the neocons have struck again, dreaming up a “regime change” scheme that ignored practical realities, such as ethnic and religious fissures. Then, as the blood flowed and the suffering worsened, the neocons just sought out someone else to blame.

Thus, it seems unlikely that Nuland, regarded by some in Washington as the new “star” in U.S. foreign policy, will be fired for her dangerous incompetence, just as most neocons who authored the Iraq disaster remain “respected” experts employed by major think tanks, given prized space on op-ed pages, and consulted at the highest levels of the U.S. government.

I live in Ukraine. Everything is 100% correct about the article. Ever since the the US orchistrated coup in Feb last year the life for ordinary people here in Ukraine has been turned to pure hell. With local currency collapsing 3fold within one year and all prices skyrocketing many people here are starving. Retired poeple are particulalrly gravely hit here with an average pension of US 40 per month and european prices for food and medicines. The country is collapsing. I’ keep awake at night thinking how to get along with maintaining my famaly with the ever depreciating pay I get. I have not even started to tell about the atrocities of war and how they make millions here on other people’s sorrow and grief, something you wouldn’t hear from your mockingberd media. Anglo-american expansion brings debt and death…

In any discussion involving Victoria Nuland it should be remembered that she is also Mrs. Robert Kagan, wife of the arch Zionist neocon so heavily involved in the Iraq quagmire. Make of it what you will.

Just another red herring to befuddle Americans.

Right Sector has been financed, organized and led by Zionists since before the coup that put a Jewish prime minister and Jewish president in power to loot the Ukraine. It’s too early to know for sure, but it appears that Right Sector and other “far right, neo-Nazi” groups throughout Europe are being organized into a European ISIS.

In this capacity, they will destabilize governments that even consider leaving the European Union.

Special Education for Americans: Who arms this private army? Who feeds and houses this large number of otherwise unemployed young men? Who pays their salaries?

    Follow the money trail!

I think Robert Parry’s most important point is given in the final paragraph:
How much damage does one have to do in order to be pegged an irredeemable screw-up, and cast out? For good. There seems to be no answer.
Nixon’s resurrection and Kissinger’s eternal life prove that none of this is news.

We all have (or had) our naive ideas about what america stood for, or was trying for. To this very moment our government announces intentions and goals, and the consequent results are uniformly unmitigated failure – take the grand total of 60 moderate Syrians we’ve begun to train to defeat Assad AND the Islamic State.
Yet the band plays on. Whether it’s the US scripters, operatives and rationalizers on the one hand, or some of the rest of us – uninvested observers – on the other, there an awful lot of people on a real warp

One suggested correction: as I remember the news from Feb 2014, Nuland passed out cookies to BOTH sides (protesters and police) that day on the Maidan. Not a crucial part of the story, but as it’s told here is a little misleading.

Victoria Nuland has been involved in managing and directing information attacks against Russia.

Nuland assumed office as as Assistant Secretary of State for European & Eurasian Affairs on September 18, 2013.

On October 31 – November 3, 2013, Nuland traveled to Istanbul and Adana where she met with senior Turkish government officials.

On November 3-4, 2013 she met in Kyiv with with government officials and representatives from multiple political parties to “discuss Ukraine’s European aspirations”.

On November 13, 2013, back in Washington for her first US public address in office as Assistant Secretary of State, Nuland spoke to a packed house at the Atlantic Council:

Toward a Transatlantic Renaissance: Ensuring Our Shared Future
Victoria Nuland speaking at the Atlantic Council
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE6XjfwarOY

Damon Wilson, Executive Vice President of Programs and Strategy at the Atlantic Council, introduced Nuland.

WILSON: “You were just staying in Kiev, I believe.”

NULAND: “I was just in Kiev.”

WILSON: “Do you think we’ll get there in building this? I mean, we’re running the clock, yes?”

NULAND: “You know, I’ve spent 25 years of my career being an optimist about Ukraine. I’m not going to stop being an optimist today.

“One of the things that really struck me, Damon, I have to say, was how much the political conversation, the social conversation, the popular conversation has changed. All the major streams in Ukrainian society want Europe now, whether you’re talking about the business community, whether you’re talking about young people.

“Even the vast majority of politicians understand that Ukraine will be richer, freer, stronger with Europe. It’s simply a question of whether some of those difficult issues can be overcome, some of the old grievances can be set aside in favor of the future. We hope Ukraine’s leaders make the right choice. Only they can make that choice, though.”

Three months later, it was “Fuck the EU” as Kiev snipers ushered in Nuland’s vaunted “trans-Atlantic Renaissance”.

Actually, it’s been “Fuck the EU” all along.

Wilson is a co-author with faux “independent journalist” Eliot Higgins of the Atlantic Council report, “Hiding in Plain Sight: Putin’s War in Ukraine”.

Nuland, along with Higgins and the Atlantic Council, are working feverishly in support of the US/NATO “hybrid war” against Russia.

NATO members state Turkey and post-coup Ukraine are primary battlefronts in the war on Russia, and the information war is intensifying with the first anniversary of the MH-17 crash.

Victoria Nuland is well aware of both Georgian and Ukrainian history, and knows the players or “patsies” now engaged in them. Indeed, she was in Kiev during the Orange Revolution when she was US Ambassador to NATO, banging the drum for regime change. Georgia had already had a similar US-inspired regime change, led by Saakashvili. Now another violent regime change has occurred, but has not gone to plan, Saakashvili is being brought in to advise these new “patsies”.

Nuland’s position on Ukraine is clear. Der Spiegel described a closed-door meeting she held at the Munich Security Conference a week before, involving “perhaps two dozen U.S. diplomats and Senators.” She told them to “fight against the Europeans” on the issue of arming Ukraine to fight Russia, referred to the meeting between the leaders of Germany, France and Russia as“Merkel’s Moscow junk,” and “Moscow bullshit,” and welcomed a Senator calling German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen the “Defeatism Minister.”

Nuland doesn’t want an agreement between the warring parties in Ukraine, or to prevent further loss of life. The more Ukraine is in crisis, the more the US, or rather she as its representative, can do what it likes in the name of “regulating” that crisis. That, apparently, includes rehabilitating Saakashvili by making him an “adviser”, and therefore a statesman, rather than the wanted criminal he is in the country he was president of.

It is hardly surprising therefore that this open support for a man forced out of Georgia for his many crimes aroused considerable disquiet in Tbilisi during her visit. When pressed about the alleged crimes of the former president she would only answer that Ukraine was in need of expertise and was seeking advice from those who have a proven track record in such situations. It was exactly that track record which got him kicked out of Tbilisi, so such a statement cannot be considered friendly.

The U.S. Department of State claimed her visit was dedicated to discussing “cooperation and regional issues” and “Georgia’s path toward European integration and Georgia’s efforts to defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty.” In English, this means ensuring that Georgia cooperates with the US on Ukraine by threatening it with being barred from entering the EU and losing Abkhazia and South Ossetia forever if it doesn’t. Open support for Saakashvili is all part of the same threat.

All that I can say is “Wow”! I had heard that Larry Diamond, who is related to the US State Department, was the one who I believe produced the “I am Ukrainian” video but now we see the girl who “emotionally” appealed to the world about supposed Ukrainian democracy against corruption becoming a politician herself under the Georgian criminal Mikheil Saakashvili. The Ukrainian story just keeps getting more and more perverted by the day, it is like some really bad Hollywood “Wag the Dog” script – unreal.

Speaking of Victoria Nuland and how twisted the information is coming out of the US Government overall was her quote from March 16, 2015 where she stated, “Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine are suffering a reign of terror.” Meanwhile, anyone who is paying attention knows that Forbes wrote an article on March 20, 2015 entitled “One Year After Russia Annexed Crimea, Locals Prefer Moscow To Kiev” where they point out that Gallup and GFK polls all indicate that Crimeans are overwhelmingly happy to be Russian again and want Ukraine to recognize the referendum. I think this also puts to bed to assertion in the MSM that “Crimeans voted at gunpoint”. I would also add that in May of 2014, the Pew Research Center also did a poll with the same results as the Gallup and GFK polls.

This shows you to the degree with which the US Government, or people within the US Government, are willing to go to twist information to make everything Russia’s fault.

    On a related subject:
In the summer of 2000, the Project for the New American Century (PNAC), a neo-conservative think tank riddled with soon to be Bush administration officials and advisers, issued a document calling for the radical restructuring of U.S. government and military policies. It advocated the massive expansion of defense spending, the re-invasion of Iraq, the military and economic securing of Afghanistan and Central Asia, increased centralized power and funds for the CIA, FBI, and NSA, among a slew of other policies that would, in the near future, be enacted upon their ascension to power. In the same document, they cite a potential problem with their plan. Referring to the goals of transforming the U.S. and global power structure, the paper states that because of the American public’s slant toward ideas of democracy and freedom, “this process of transformation is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor.”

        FYI / follow-up…

Check out Operation Gladio & The P-2, and also Operation Ohio…

General Lyman Lemnitzer was JCS/Chrmn and gave the final “ok” and approval for the Northwoods File recommendations to and for Sec/Def MacNamara’s and JFK approvals and authorization…He hated / detested JFK…and due to Bay of Pigs AND JFK’s distaste and revulsion of the Northwoods “scenario” recommendations, JFK/RFK/MacNamara sent his off to Europe to head NATO, where he (NATO intell and CIA) then “made trouble” for DeGaulle behind JFK’s back, since anti-Gaullist elements and sectors and those hated JFK had “much in-common” and crossed paths in intell circles in various parts of the world …. Lemnitzer actually worked closely with Dulles in OSS/US Military operations in Europe in WW2. DeGaulle had been on the receiving end of many assassination attempts that more than resembled the final/eventual ambush that killed JFK…at least one attempt may have involved US intell/defense services and may have seriously impacted upon relations with US and NATO in the early 1960’s and really upset JFK, who thru his own sources and thru DeGaulle .figured out what was really happening….and uncoincidently one report/alert reached Washington and US intel and Secret Service officials about a potential attempt against De Gaulle while he was to march in JFK’s funeral procession in Washington, DC.that weekend…One French assassin/terrorist, (Mertz/Roux/Sourte–take your pick?!), with CIA/DoD connections was “escorted” from TX and flown out of the USA that Friday or Saturday. A back-up in Dallas or prepped, primed and ready for De Gaulle a few days later???…That alert must have given the Secret Service the gitters…Just imagine what some of those who were involved and killed JFK were thinking as well, while they were actually saluting JFK’s coffin while it passed them…Just like when the hierarchy of the Nazi gov was “saluting” Rommel’s coffin in almost the same exact setting almost 19 years before,,,wife with black dress and veil, a mourning and saluting albeit grown son, friends, flag-draped coffin, etc., procession of dignitaries and soldiers… and ALL the top officials actually saluting Rommel and his coffin while it was parading by,,,when they’re the one’s who actually killed him (!) , (he “threw his hat” and fate in with many others, with the final plot/attempt to kill Hitler-Op Valkyrie) The funeral of Rommel like “one BIG open secret” was ALL for public /PR consumption and “explained” in the German press & media and to the German public at the time, as “due to wounds suffered by a British fighter plane…”

Many are questioning to how far these economic measures may go, and wondering who may be next.

Gen. Wesley Clark made the U.S.’s intentions clear regarding our foreign policy and this was a few days AFTER 9/11:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RC1Mepk_Sw

Imagine that. Listen to the list of countries the Joint Chief’s had on their list and we can check almost all of them off….except Iran.

Who is driving this foreign policy train?

Who stands to benefit from the take over/destruction and occupation of all of these countries?

        The United States and Israel.

And now it makes more sense why we see Netanyahu marching into our Congress with a standing ovation! Why we see EVERY presidential candidate kissing Bibi’s ring.

Seriously. WHO is in control of U.S. foreign policy? The U.S. and the interests of the American public or the State of Israel?

Something stinks to high Heavens here. Hillary Clinton is bashing the BDS movement and is practically calling for it to be CRIMINALIZED! as she takes millions from her main benefactor Haim Saban whose prime objective is The State of Israel!

Every Republican is bashing Obama’s Iran nuclear weapons deal.

Even Bernie “Feel the Bern!” Sanders is a staunch supporter of Israel! As is Donald Trump!

We do not have ONE SINGLE AMERICAN running for president who will stand up to Israel!

        Why is that??!

This column cries out for more discovery or analysis of who calls the shots in American foreign policy. I’m fine with holding Obama responsible, but I’ll bet that neither he nor any president has much freedom to pick people for key positions in the National Security State. I suspect that’s why Bernie Sanders, for example, is not going to make any promises regarding changes in that area. In fact no one, except the son of Ron Paul, that Ron Paul who became a nonperson in his last Presidential primary races even though he was performing much better than most, indicates support for any such change. The power of the National Security State is reflected in the MSM coverage of the Ukraine, even though Mr. Parry charitably attributes this slant to merely a benighted editorial policy. It is reflected in the CIA’s abiity to bug Diane Feinstein’s phone without triggering a Constitutional crisis. It is reflected in the denial of access to the courts by victims of the NSS’s illegal wars of aggression, and in the $40 million NIST report on the destruction of the World Trade Center which refused to acknowledge, let alone explain, the obvious controlled demolition, the molten steel two months after the disaster, the presence of military grade nanothermite in the dust, etc. It seems clear to many people who have studied this more than I that this is the legacy of the failure to punish the people behind the National Security State for killing the Kennedy brothers. And the failure to pursue accountability for 9/11 has now further rewarded the patient stewards of the NSS, who are doing better than ever now that they have privatized not only weapons manufacture but foreign policy and the warmaking power. Tell me this isn’t true, Mr. Parry. Tell me that a President could, if he wanted, pick a Secretary of State who would defy the quiet advice of the Council on Foreign Relations, or more precisely, the powers that are represented in that Council. Could he get him confirmed? Of course not. Tell me that he could order an end to the domestic propaganda might of the CIA and the Pentagon, and now Homeland Security, if he wanted to. Tell me that if those free agencies told Congress to jump, the only question would be “how high?” If we cannot call a spade a spade, we are just telling stories, some more plausible than the others but all of them false. The neoCons are bad, but they are just a face of something worse.

Man oh man !!! You SO right and on point with what you say..!!! ..They are totally evil…and know how to “kick below the belt” or ‘above it, when and where they choose…No matter out -landish it sounds, but the last thing the Jeb Bush/neo-cons ever anticipated or expected was to be totally overshadowed and so-far outmaneuvered by an other candidate, right out of “leaving the station” a few weeks ago…especially one with unlimited funds & independent wealth and an independent voice, and totally non-linked to the neo-con agenda…In fact, t due to Mr. Trumps world-wide bus empire and connections, it would not be a stretch to ponder the likely possibility that the worlds of Mr. Trump and his associates and very specific parties within the Bush/ Neo-con world may have already bumped heads prior at some point, if not- “about to”… At that stratosphere-level of finance, legal, business, politics and social networks…”it’s either friends or enemies”…. At that level, and mix that with a presidential race and things can get VERY, VERY interesting…Others should never assume, and I believe you have not, that “the evil” that you and and I know exist….DOES NOT STOP AT THE “WATER’S EDGE” of this nation. I fact that is where the main “hive” resides…..

Spot on. While I feel that Obama should be held responsible for the actions of the policies of those in his administration, however, as you pointed out, what is more important is to know who is really pulling the strings of the marketing campaign known as Obama. Clearly, Obama is a tool of the deep state, which has essentially dictated government policy for decades. It’s difficult to see much difference between the previous administration and the current one with the exception that Obama is more radical in many areas such as the surveillance state and corporate subservience (TPP). Who really believes the government’s “investigations” of JFK’s murder, USS Liberty’s attack and one of the biggest lies, the 9/11 attack?

Supposedly, 2017 is the “magic year” the world will finally see the assassination files related to JFK:

        http://www.politico.com/story/2015/05/why-last-of-jfk-files-could-embarrass-cia-118233.html

        But probably not even then.

It is an un-American travesty that the American people have not been able to see ALL the evidence related to the assassination of JFK!

How about asking every single person running for president if he/she would release ALL the files of the JFK assassination upon taking office?

And ALL the evidence related to LBJ and Israel’s attack on the USS Liberty during the Six Day War (which came within minutes of causing a nuclear attack on Egypt!) and the full accounting of the events of 9/11 (including the STILL redacted 28 pages of the Congressional report on 9/11 that might implicate either Saudi Arabia or Israel)?

Because not ONE member of the MSM would announce his/her intention to ask such questions we should clearly see that the media is a party to ALL the cover-ups!

abbywood, as you well know the American people loss their country the minute they all excepted the findings of the Warren Commission. I have believed for a very long time, how all things are at a loss until we finally get to know the truth to what happened on that fateful day November 22, 1963. Only, then may we move forward and discover what happened on 9/11 or what had happened surrounding the attack on the USS Liberty. Also, we should not forget the many other tragedy’s that have never been reported to us honestly. In fact, the JFK assassination was probably the smoothest coup ever in the history of mankind. I say this due to how hardly anyone thinks of it as a coup. Yet, you still may meet people who don’t believe the official story, but we just don’t know what to do about it. Instead, with all the confusion that has developed around the Kennedy assassination, America has acquired a profitable whole new industry, the JFK assassination industry. As they say, Only in America!

if and when it be be shown/released it will l be shown as some ego driven document, a LARGE one to “retro” justify WHY they did it…why JFK was murdered, without any sense of remorse, compassion or apology…total and complete justification as if they felt they saved the country (no matter who whacked-out will it appear)…even long after death they will want to have the last word….and their successors and “bureaucratic” progeny will make use of it in the meantime as leverage or to enhance their own “inherited” corrupted wide- spread power.and influence…

Current instability notwithstanding, the city of Mukachevo has a colorful history. It underwent several name changes as the map of East-Central Europe was repeatedly redrawn over the past century.

The city of Munkács came under Austrian control in the mid-18th century as part of the Kingdom of Hungary and was made a key fortress of the Habsburg Monarchy.

One of the successor states of Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of World War I, Czechoslovakia was founded in October 1918 as part of the Treaty of St. Germain.

In 1919, after the American-Rusyns agreed with Tomáš Masaryk to incorporate Carpathian Ruthenia into Czechoslovakia.

On June 4, 1920, the city was renamed Mukačevo when it officially became part of Czechoslovakia by the Treaty of Trianon. The whole of Carpathian Ruthenia was occupied by Czechoslovak troops.

From 1920-1944, the Jewish community of Munkács constituted almost half of the town’s population. It was famous for its Hasidic activity as well as its innovations in Zionism and modern Jewish education.

After 1933, Czechoslovakia remained the only democracy in central and eastern Europe. However, many of the Germans, Hungarians, Ruthenians and Poles and some Slovaks, felt oppressed because the political elite did not generally allow political autonomy for minority ethnic groups.

This policy, combined with increasing Nazi propaganda especially in the industrialized German-speaking Sudetenland, led to unrest among the non-Czech population.

By the late 1930s, Nazi Germany had substantially revised the Versailles Treaty with her remilitarization of the Rhineland (March 7, 1936), Anschluss of Austria (March 12, 1938), and the Munich Agreement (September 30, 1938).

Under the First Vienna Arbitration and Award (November 2, 1938), Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy separated the largely Magyar-populated territories in southern Slovakia and southern Carpathian Rus from Czechoslovakia and awarded to them Hungary.

In mid-March 1939, Adolf Hitler gave Hungary permission to occupy the rest of Carpatho-Ukraine, north up to the Polish border, thus creating a common Hungarian-Polish border, as had existed prior to the 18th-century Partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The renamed Munkács was then the only town in Hungary with a Jewish majority. Though antisemitic legislation was introduced by the Hungarian authorities, Subcarpathian Rus, like the rest of Hungary, remained a relative haven for Jews until Nazi Germany occupied Hungary in 1944. The Hungarian Jewish community was the last Jewish community in Europe to be subjected to the concentration camps.

On March 19, 1944, the German army invaded Hungary and occupied Munkács. Within less than three months, the peripheral Jewish communities were annihilated – including the communities in the Subcarpathian Rus’ district – and the Jews of Munkács were sent to Auschwitz by the Nazi German Eichmann Commando.

On 23 May 1944, the final deportation train left Munkács, carrying 3,080 people. These were the last Jews of the Munkács community on their way to Auschwitz-Birkenau. On May 30, 1944 the city was pronounced Judenrein (free of Jews).

In the end of 1944, the Red Army stormed Carpathian Ruthenia. At first the territory was given to the re-estabilished Czechoslovakia, then became part of the Soviet Union by a treaty between the two countries, later in 1945. The Soviet Union began a policy of expulsion of the Hungarian population.

In 1945, the city was ceded to the Ukrainian SSR (now Ukraine) and was renamed Mukachevo.
During the Cold War, the city hosted a Soviet air base. Starting in the 1970s, the Mukachevo radar station was used for a launch on warning nuclear missile attack. In the 1990s, the radar station was used to engage the A-135 anti-ballistic missile system.

In 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed and the Mukachevo radar station ended up in the newly independent country of Ukraine, together with the radar in Sevastopol. Russia signed a 15-year agreement with Ukraine in 1992 to rent both radars for $840,000 per year, although unlike other overseas stations the radar was to be staffed by Ukrainians not Russians.

In 2005, management of the radars transferred from the military to the civil Ukrainian National Space Agency and the rent increased to $1.3 million, although Ukraine asked for more. In 2008, Russia decided to stop using information from the two Ukrainian radar stations, partly due to the then Ukrainian government’s stated intention to join NATO.

According to the most recent Ukrainian census, Mukachevo has a Ukrainian majority (77.1%) with a significant minority of Russians (9.0%), Hungarians (8.5%), Germans (1.9%), and Roma (1.4%).

NATO will no doubt be more than happy to step in and clean up the mess Nuland made in Mukachevo and elsewhere. ‘Cause that’s what friends are for.

Another victory-in-the-making for Milton Friedman’s economics and the Chicago School that continues to carry on his craft: create disasters in a country, destroy their economical base, and when you have that nation “down and out” change the government and privatize all its assets.
Then, you can have free markets, U.S. corporations buying up all businesses, schools, banks, etc., and end up with global capitalism at its worst. The U.S. has used this M.O. over and over again,

“At every turn we see confirmation of Einstein’s dictum to the effect that you can’t expect solutions from the people whose best thinking caused the problems in the first place.

Our financial system is in collapse. In the future, looking back with an historical perspective, the collapse will appear to have been fairly quick. In “real time,” as we live it, the collapse has seemed nearly interminable.

What’s clear is that the problem is the system itself. Finance capitalism creates nothing more prolifically or efficiently than debt. It doesn’t always generate the growth or the capital needed to service and eventually pay the debt it creates, but it always creates debt.

This systemic defect is usually addressed by letting the finance system crash every generation or so. But the last time it collapsed regularly, around 1930, the Elites came close enough to losing their accumulated advantage they decided not to let that happen anymore. They created agencies to “regulate” the system, and them subsumed those agencies to protect themselves. That didn’t solve the inherent problems; it just accumulated them.

As a result, the crash that is building now is actually the compounded imbalances of perhaps 4 generational crashes that should have happened but were prevented, and nobody on Earth who has passed the Elite’s vetting has any idea what to do about it. They couldn’t possibly have any idea what to do; they are entirely creatures of the current system.

So it’s no surprise all anyone can suggest to Greece is more loans, and probably more off-balance-sheet derivatives, more shifts of assets from one column to another, and of course, loads more debt.

Having made our entire financial system abstract and anchored to nothing has permitted the Elites to gain infinite notional wealth. It has also allowed the creation of infinite debt. And since it’s all notional, all it takes for all of it to disappear is for people to stop accepting the notion. We’re getting closer to the moment when people do just that; stop accepting the notion.

It’s going to be really hard when that happens. None of the rules we have learned will have any application anymore. The old rules our grandparents taught us, if we were lucky enough to have clever grandparents and a relationship with them, will be of great help. But none of the rest of what we usually assume will apply.”

I may have missed it, but I really follow the news and this was not, to my knowledge ever mentioned in the US media. I caught this on F-24, RT and Japanese TV….
I have come to the undeniable conclusion, after years of research, that the US media is under a vast, “hidden” corp and gov. agenda and control, to a very large degree, and lost it’s ability of hard investigative reporting several years ago, and this “noose” has gotten tighter and tighter….all in the name of banners like, “oh, it would make the country look bad…” or the always convenient “blanket” of “national security” or the equally cleaver device, “oh !, it might help our enemies…”…No ! It’s only enabling the whackos to further defraud, embezzle, cheat, connive, steal, manipulate and murder and initiate endless wars, even to the point of using covertly, present proxies that on the surface the appear contradictory or illusory, but “below the surface” serve a very deliberate, specific and calculated purpose, e.g. ISIS…It’s now .The Ukraine, The Middle East…once it was SE Asia and Cuba…same exact techniques of fraud, duplicity and “hidden” war-like and tension-escalated driven agendas…

Stefan, I don’t think such a broad statement is accurate. I think a more accurate summation is that the mainstream media is controlled by the “Deep State” and the American public is bombarded by propaganda posing as news and are very much misinformed. Frankly, although the newspapers are influencial only a relatively small percentage of the public actually read the neocon/neoliberal Washington Post or NYT. Most people get their news from the major networks (CBS, NBC, etc.) and local papers, which are, in effect, stenographers for the federal government.

It’s fairly obvious (to anyone except Nuland) that the right wing wanted to overthrow the democratically elected government and establish their own control over the country from the very beginning. In all likelihood, they saw the American intervention as a means to achieve their own ends and went along with the plan assuming that once the elected government was gone, they would have a free hand in gaining control themselves. It appears now that they have nearly reached their goal and will get there soon.

People like Nuland and her infamous husband are like chess players who can only see one move in front of them, don’t understand that for every action there is a reaction and are oblivious of the law of unintended consequences. Unfortunately, our government is populated with many such fools.

Yet, despite the extraordinary costs and dangers, Nuland failed to appreciate the practical on-the-ground realities, much as her husband and other neocons did in Iraq. While Nuland got her hand-picked client Yatsenyuk installed and he did oversee a U.S.-demanded “neo-liberal” economic plan – slashing pensions, heating assistance and other social programs – the chaos that her “regime change” unleashed transformed Ukraine into a financial black hole.

I must disagree with this. The neocons knew exactly what they wanted to do in Iraq. And Libya. And Syria. Creating and maintaining chaos was their goal from the outset.

A couple more thoughts: Nuland is Obama’s creature, and remains on the job. From this I conclude her work satisfies him.

Also, I suspect the neocons have more in mind for the Ukraine. A glance at a map shows a major gap on Russia’s border in “defenses” against Iranian missiles.

No purpose is served by simply creating chaos. You can’t profit from it. You may not believe it, but neocons are rational (albeit not very intelligent) people and don’t do things without a purpose. Unfortunately, while being rational, they are also myopic and cannot see the future consequences of their own actions.

Nuland is not an Obama creature. She has been with the State Department at least since 1993 and served in an official capacity in both Clinton and Bush administrations. That being said, the fact that she remains on the job testifies to the astounding stupidity of the current administration.

Chaos creates weakness, uncertainty and vulnerability as well as exploitable opportunities to pick up the btoken pieces, exactly as the US has been practicing to various degrees since at least the end of WWII. Although today it’s much more out in the open than ever before right along with the fact the press openly acts more as the propagada disseminator than a public’s informant.

What does it all mean? It means the neocons are out of control and as of yet no one, or no group, has been able to stop them and whatever it is they “think” they’re achieving.

I am in complete agreement with Zachary Smith. Even among those critical
of certain policies there remains the basic “need” to protect those who
are ultimately responsible. In this case, Barack Obama.

In the USA we have an inalienable right to vote. A vote is an expression of
support even though of decreasing value.

There is no OBLIGATION to vote. For anyone.

I have drawn two “lines in the sand”.: One is the failure to
condemn Israel for its many crimes continuing daily.
The other is the warrior position at home and in foreign policy.

(There are many good “causes” but these are the ones
on which I have decided to prioritize.)

I did not vote for Barack Obama in 2012. I could not
support any candidate now running for office. It
is a matter of my own moral compass.

Bernie Sanders, for example, the once socialist who
excites so many “liberal-progressives” has not said
much about eliminating the US military in the world
and has been silent on Israel, the Zionist colonialization
      of Palestine.

Strangely(?), the destruction of the USA supported dictators in the Mid-East and chaos in the Ukraine aids the Zionist weapon sales that USA taxpayers pay 3+ billion $$$ a year to be a Zionist client. USA citizenship should require a listing of dual citizenship, especially, mandated for “news reporters” & government employees of Zionland.

Now the Zionists in the United States have their newest shill group “Christians United for Israel” hawking for them!

I was listening to some show on “The Answer” (a right wing Zionist radio station heard nationally) where Bill Kristol was trying to get all his “Christian Zionist” supporters to call in to their senators and representatives to denounce ANY agreement the United States and its world partners might be coming to with Iran related to Iran’s possible future acquisition of nuclear weapons.

And all I could think of was two things:

What of Israel’s nuclear weapons stockpiles and the delivery systems they now have to deliver those nuclear weapons not only to the Middle East but to Europe (“The Samson Option…Google it). What about IAEA inspections of ISRAEL’S NUCLEAR WEAPONS??!!

And how dare any “Christians” in the United States support the war criminal state of Israel and it’s apartheid hold on the Palestinians with it’s periodic “mowing of the lawn” murdering of innocent occupied men, women and children?

      Seriously.

Where are the TRUE AMERICAN CHRISTIANS who are witnessing the murder of innocents whether in the occupied Palestinian territories or in Yemen, or Syria, or Iraq or anyplace else??!

        July 15, 2015 at 15:12

Thank you, Abby. You are so correct. The problem, as I see it, is that few Christians know and understand the “Israel” in the Bible – the “Israel” that is God’s chosen – does NOT, in fact, refer to the particular plot of land that just happens to be called “Israel” on a map.

Romans 11:26 says: … and so all Israel shall be saved

Romans 9:6 For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel …

Romans 2:28 – for he is not Jew, which is one outwardly … but he is one which is a Jew inwardly

1 Corinthians 11:7: For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God

1 Timothy 1:4: Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith

Titus 3:9: But avoid foolish questions, genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

Romans 10:12: For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek.

Romans 9:7-8: Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children; but, in Isaac shall thy seed be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Galatians 3:7: Know ye, therefore, that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

Galatians 3:38-29: There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

I could go on, literally, for pages and pages, but – Basically, to sum it up, those of us who believe in Jesus Christ ARE Israel.

        … just sayin’ …

        regards to all,
        Bert

If they cannot achieve their goal; they create chaos which allows them to duck into the shadows. There is no doubt that Kolomoiskii is the person that Nuland wants at the head of the government, her first choice, as I had said before, however, this choice would have been summarily rejected by the government and people. An appropriate appellation for him would be Mr. Corrupted. Porochenko is out of favors with Nuland; not tough enough to make those tough choices and now she wants him out. He still has the support of the military, albeit, a weak support, but the military understands what will become of them and the country should Kolomoiski prevail. Perhaps, Porochenko would request some assistance from the East Ukraine and Russia. A double front would be to his advantage.

Why do we focus on the “little people” and not place the blame squarely on the person in charge? We were quite ready and willing to do that when the easily manipulated George W. Bush was president but journalists seem to shy away from placing the responsibility where it belongs, on Obama. The coup in Ukraine could not have happened without Obama’s approval. Appointment’s like that of an American and former State Department official to run Ukraine’s Finance Ministry or the appointment of the former U.S. puppet and PM of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili as Governor of Ukraine’s Odessa Oblast serve American interests and were surely approved by Obama. The manipulation of the oil prices by Saudi Arabia with U.S. support designed to hurt Russia and Iran were done with Obama’s approval

Obama enthusiastically supported the overthrow of Gaddafi, which created the unending chaos in the region. And the U.S. would have entered the Syrian war if not for the last minute reprieve from Putin.

Let’s face the truth, Obama is responsible for much of the chaos and irresponsible foreign policies we are currently experiencing and he should be held responsible.

    • W. R. Knight
      July 13, 2015 at 20:04

Agreed. As captain of the ship, the ultimate responsibility is Obama’s. Like Harry Truman said “The buck stops here”.

And as Pogo said “We have met the enemy and he is us”.

    • Walt Hess
      July 13, 2015 at 20:32

You are correct. Obama is the person in charge, he directs the whole show. Even if he gets his marching orders from corporate interests and Wall Street, he is the person who bears responsibility, both legal and moral, for the consequences of America’s actions.

His legacy will be that of an irresponsible, reckless, smooth talking bufoon who cared little about the lives of countless people when the desires of empire made themselves known. He’s really not much better than the Charleston shooter.

The U.S. has taken part in clandestine operations aimed at Iran and its ally Syria for

Nevermind Nuland and her Neocon husband Robert Kagan (although they are the prime foot-soldiers in all of this).

I say lay this mess on the doorstep of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton:

      http://www.thedailysheeple.com/how-hillary-clinton-is-responsible-for-overthrowing-ukraine-and-provoking-war-with-russia_032015

Hillary Clinton must be made to OWN this travesty against the innocent civilians of Ukraine along with Barack Obama.

Hillary has a long track record of bringing havoc and death to not just Ukraine but also to Libya which is now a failed state teaming with ISIS and other terrorists!

All Hillary wants to yack about now is more B.S. related to the U.S. economy, the gay issue, abortion rights, equal pay blah, blah, blah.

But when the subject of foreign affairs finally comes up (and it will), she will be hard pressed to defend her pathetic record.

And don’t get me started about her disgusting record of cozying up to Bibi and her main financial backer, Haim “My first concern is Israel” Saban.

She is nothing but a bloody tool of U.S. imperialism with Israel as her prime focus.

Shame on any American who supports her to be our president!

Just thinking of having her in control of the U.S. nuclear arsenal makes me cringe! Especially when she considers Putin to be a “Hitler”.

There are lots of third party candidates on most states ballots. Though I voted for Obama the first time I could not in good conscience do it the second time. I voted Pacific Green. If Hillary is the Democratic nominee I’ll do it again.

If half of the abstainers voted for the same 3rd party candidate he/she would win. Not voting is spun as the electorate not caring. Voting 3rd party sends the clear message we don’t want the scum being offered.

It doesn’t matter who’s name you write on a piece of paper, the “winner is decided by those who count the vote, not those who cast it. The only vote that will really count to restore our blessed republic is the vote cast from the barrel of a gun.

As a Canadian, I have to ask how anyone can vote for either the Republicans or Democrats knowing full well that both of the parties are full of warmongers and overall liars. I mean Hillary Clinton made a joke when Gaddafi was murdered something to the effect of “We came, we saw, he died” – ha, ha, ha! Then when it comes to Bush saying that he fully supported what his brother did knowing full well of all of the lies used to go to war with Iraq. Meanwhile much of the US government is still filled with people that voted for the Iraq War and countless other US “interventions” in the world. Both of these parties are bad, really bad. I know that the US has independent parties as well, isn’t it past time to vote for one these? By the way, your vote is your own and it is never “wasted” as the propaganda from the major US parties would have you believe.

            July 14, 2015 at 17:30

Doc Hollywood, yeah I am always dumbfounded by the fact that the American people continue to vote for either of these parties knowing full well of the lies that “both” parties are guilty of. If the American people truly want to take back their democracy, they need to come out en-masse to vote for parties outside of the 2 party system. Even if there party did not win, if enough people did this then maybe the US government would start to listen to the American people rather then making corporations “people” and doing their bidding.

I almost sometimes wish that the people of the world could vote in the US election because more than any other government in the world, it will be the world that has to deal with the results of the US election in American Foreign Policy (such as the “perpetual” warfare that we are involved in today).

          • July 15, 2015 at 09:16

Sadly, the sanctity of the vote has been corrupted for a number of election cycles. Most election returns are counted by computer programs as with Diebold, no paper ballot trail. Election results are more easily manipulated by the PTB, not to mention the illegals voting without proof of citizenship. As Uncle Joe Stalin said, “Those who vote decide nothing, those who count the vote decide everything.”

It infuriates Ukrainians to be called Neo Nazi’s b/c it is what you forget or omit to write is that Stalin (USSR) caused Holodomor which starved around 7 million Ukrainians. This is why Ukrainians supported Germany during the rise of Hitler only until they realized what the SS & Nazi’s were doing. Many Ukrainians ended up in unpaid German work camps.
If the USA is helping Ukrainians from being taken over by Putin then you know that Putin is a very dangerous (ex KGB) who wants to rebuild the USSR which is a threat to the USA.
