Ukraine’s Neo-Nazis Demand Respect

Exclusive: Thousands of Ukraine’s neo-Nazis surrounded the parliament in Kiev demanding that the government honor Ukrainian paramilitary forces who fought for Adolf Hitler in World War II, another embarrassing reminder of the extremism unleashed by last February’s U.S.-backed coup, says Robert Parry.

By Robert Parry

For months, the New York Times and other major U.S. news outlets have insisted that it’s just Russian propaganda to say that a significant neo-Nazi presence exists inside Ukraine, but thousands of these “non-existent” neo-Nazis battled police on Tuesday outside the parliament building in Kiev demanding recognition of their Hitler-collaborating forebears.

The parliament, aware of the obvious public relations fiasco that would follow if it bowed to far-right demands to honor members of the Nazi-affiliated Ukrainian Insurgent Army (or UIA), defeated the proposal. That touched off riots by an estimated 8,000 protesters led by Ukraine’s right-wing Svoboda party and the Right Sektor.

The neo-Nazi Wolfsangel symbol on a banner in Ukraine.

Historians blame the UIA and other Ukrainian fascist forces for the extermination of thousands of Poles and Jews during World War II as these right-wing Ukrainian paramilitaries sided with the German Nazis in their fight against the Soviet Union’s Red Army. Svoboda and the Right Sektor have elevated UIA leader Stepan Bandera to the level of a Ukrainian national hero.

But Svoboda and Right Sektor activists are not just neo-Nazi street protesters. They were key figures in last February’s violent uprising that overthrew elected President Viktor Yanukovych and established a coup regime that the U.S. State Department quickly recognized as “legitimate.” Many far-right militants have since been incorporated into the Ukrainian military in its fight to crush resistance to the coup regime from ethnic Russians in Ukraine’s east.

Though played down by the Western press, the neo-Nazi affiliations of these militants have occasionally popped up in news stories, including references to displays of Nazi insignias, but usually these citations are mentioned only in passing or are confined to the last few paragraphs of lengthy stories or are dismissed as “Russian propaganda.”

But this neo-Nazi reality continues to be an inconvenient truth about the U.S.-backed coup regime that seized power in Kiev with the overthrow of Yanukovych on Feb. 22. Several government ministries, including national security, were given to these far-right elements in recognition of their key role in the putsch that forced members of Yanukovych’s government to flee for their lives.

The larger historical context is that Nazism has been deeply rooted in western Ukraine since World War II, especially in cities like Lviv, where a cemetery to the veterans of the Galician SS, a Ukrainian affiliate of the Nazi SS, is maintained. These old passions were brought to the surface again in the battle to oust Yanukovych and sever historic ties to Russia.

The muscle behind the U.S.-backed Maidan protests against Yanukovych came from neo-Nazi militias trained in western Ukraine, organized into 100-man brigades and dispatched to Kiev. After the coup, neo-Nazi leader Andriy Parubiy, who was commander of the Maidan “self-defense forces,” was elevated to national security chief and soon announced that the Maidan militia forces would be incorporated into the National Guard and sent to eastern Ukraine to fight ethnic Russians resisting the coup regime.

At War in the East

As the U.S. government and media cheered this “anti-terrorist operation,” the neo-Nazis and other right-wing battalions engaged in brutal street fighting against Russian ethnic rebels. Only occasionally did this nasty reality slip into the major U.S. news media. For instance, an Aug. 10 article in the New York Times mentioned the neo-Nazi paramilitaries at the end of a lengthy story on another topic.

“The fighting for Donetsk has taken on a lethal pattern: The regular army bombards separatist positions from afar, followed by chaotic, violent assaults by some of the half-dozen or so paramilitary groups surrounding Donetsk who are willing to plunge into urban combat,” the Times reported.

“Officials in Kiev say the militias and the army coordinate their actions, but the militias, which count about 7,000 fighters, are angry and, at times, uncontrollable. One known as Azov, which took over the village of Marinka, flies a neo-Nazi symbol resembling a Swastika as its flag.” [See Consortiumnews.com’s “NYT Discovers Ukraine’s Neo-Nazis at War.”]

The conservative London Telegraph offered more details about the Azov battalion in an article by correspondent Tom Parfitt, who wrote: “Kiev’s use of volunteer paramilitaries to stamp out the Russian-backed Donetsk and Luhansk ‘people’s republics’ should send a shiver down Europe’s spine.

“Recently formed battalions such as Donbas, Dnipro and Azov, with several thousand men under their command, are officially under the control of the interior ministry but their financing is murky, their training inadequate and their ideology often alarming. The Azov men use the neo-Nazi Wolfsangel (Wolf’s Hook) symbol on their banner and members of the battalion are openly white supremacists, or anti-Semites.”

Based on interviews with militia members, the Telegraph reported that some of the fighters doubted the reality of the Holocaust, expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler and acknowledged that they are indeed Nazis.

Andriy Biletsky, the Azov commander, “is also head of an extremist Ukrainian group called the Social National Assembly,” according to the Telegraph article which quoted a commentary by Biletsky as declaring: “The historic mission of our nation in this critical moment is to lead the White Races of the world in a final crusade for their survival. A crusade against the Semite-led Untermenschen.”

In other words, for the first time since World War II, a government had dispatched Nazi storm troopers to attack a European population and officials in Kiev knew what they were doing. The Telegraph questioned Ukrainian authorities in Kiev who acknowledged that they were aware of the extremist ideologies of some militias but insisted that the higher priority was having troops who were strongly motivated to fight. [See Consortiumnews.com’s “Ignoring Ukraine’s Neo-Nazi Storm Troopers.”]

But a rebel counteroffensive by ethnic Russians in August reversed many of Kiev’s gains and drove the Azov and other government forces back to the port city of Mariupol, where Foreign Policy’s reporter Alec Luhn also encountered these neo-Nazis. He wrote:

“Blue and yellow Ukrainian flags fly over Mariupol’s burned-out city administration building and at military checkpoints around the city, but at a sport school near a huge metallurgical plant, another symbol is just as prominent: the wolfsangel (‘wolf trap’) symbol that was widely used in the Third Reich and has been adopted by neo-Nazi groups.

“Pro-Russian forces have said they are fighting against Ukrainian nationalists and ‘fascists’ in the conflict, and in the case of Azov and other battalions, these claims are essentially true.” [See Consortiumnews.com’s “Seeing No Neo-Nazi Militias in Ukraine.”]

Nazi Insignia on Helmets

More evidence continued to emerge about the presence of Nazis in the ranks of Ukrainian government fighters. Germans were shocked to see video of Azov militia soldiers decorating their gear with the Swastika and the “SS rune.” NBC News reported: “Germans were confronted with images of their country’s dark past when German public broadcaster ZDF showed video of Ukrainian soldiers with Nazi symbols on their helmets in its evening newscast.

“The video was shot in Ukraine by a camera team from Norwegian broadcaster TV2. ‘We were filming a report about Ukraine’s AZOV battalion in the eastern city of Urzuf, when we came across these soldiers,’ Oysten Bogen, a correspondent for the private television station, told NBC News. “Minutes before the images were taped, Bogen said he had asked a spokesperson whether the battalion had fascist tendencies. ‘The reply was: absolutely not, we are just Ukrainian nationalists,’ Bogen said.”

Despite the newsworthiness of a U.S.-backed government dispatching neo-Nazi storm troopers to attack Ukrainian cities, the major U.S. news outlets went to extraordinary lengths to excuse this behavior, with the Washington Post publishing a rationalization that the use of the Swastika was merely “romantic.”

This curious description of the symbol most associated with the human devastation of the Holocaust and World War II can be found in the last three paragraphs of a Post lead story published in September. Post correspondent Anthony Faiola portrayed the Azov fighters as “battle-scarred patriots” nobly resisting “Russian aggression” and willing to resort to “guerrilla war” if necessary.

The article found nothing objectionable about Azov’s plans for “sabotage, targeted assassinations and other insurgent tactics” against Russians, although such actions in other contexts are regarded as terrorism. The extremists even extended their threats to the government of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko if he agrees to a peace deal with the ethnic Russian east that is not to the militia’s liking.

“If Kiev reaches a deal with rebels that they don’t support, paramilitary fighters say they could potentially strike pro-Russian targets on their own, or even turn on the government itself,” the article states. (The riot outside the parliament building on Tuesday is an early indication that such a threat is real.)

The Post article like almost all of its coverage of Ukraine was laudatory about the Kiev forces fighting ethnic Russians in the east, but the newspaper did have to do some quick thinking to explain a photograph of a Swastika gracing an Azov brigade barracks.

So, in the last three paragraphs of the story, Faiola reported: “One platoon leader, who called himself Kirt, conceded that the group’s far right views had attracted about two dozen foreign fighters from around Europe.

“In one room, a recruit had emblazoned a swastika above his bed. But Kirt dismissed questions of ideology, saying that the volunteers, many of them still teenagers, embrace symbols and espouse extremist notions as part of some kind of ‘romantic’ idea.”

Now, this inconvenient truth — this neo-Nazi extremism in Ukraine — has reemerged in violent clashes outside the parliament building in Kiev.

“I have left the obvious, essential fact to this point, namely, that it is the Russian Armies who have done the main work in tearing the guts out of the German army. In the air and on the oceans we could maintain our place, but there was no force in the world which could have been called into being, except after several more years, that would have been able to maul and break the German army unless it had been subjected to the terrible slaughter and manhandling that has fallen to it through the strength of the Russian Soviet Armies.”

For those who like Patrick Buchanan, I’d suggest they investigate David Irving.

Why is it that you divert away — once again ?

Liking Patrick Buchanan the messenger who cares – it’s the message that is relevant ?

Abe covers both sides with “There indeed are legitimate historical controversies in the study of the Holocaust” and a “Holocaust denial” slogan ? and a his made for TV relevant contribution.

As for F. G. Sanford one is left to wonder why “ the crap” he insulting refers to fails to ever be mentioned.

Again for Abe —- Note how loudly H plays the martyr when “called out” —
please let me know how/when I have been called out ?

BTW perhaps the martyr as the only recipient receiving the “Your comment is awaiting moderation” & then is deleted probably for 911 reasons , can hope that even this reply will be allowed

To me Jewish-Zionist power is a frightening reality with harmful consequences for the U.S. the Middle East and the entire global community and exposing and countering this power is a crucially important one.

I am calling you out for your repeated “Holocaust denial” comment tactics: posting links to online Holocaust denial material, superfluous rants about “Jewish-Zionist power,” and promotion of Irving and Buchanan, both blatant admirers of Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler. You demand attention yet contribute nothing of substance to the discussion. In the context of the current article focused on Ukraine’s Neo Nazis, your comments are both intellectually and morally offensive. Stop it.

While the rise to power of the Svoboda and Right Sector neo-nazi’s in the Ukrainian military and security apparatus draws attention, what is going under the radar is the fact that Serhiy Kvit, a member of the Patriots of Ukraine grouping of the Right Sector Alliance, was appointed in February as the Minister of Education in the Cabinet of Ministers.

While the video’s posted online tend to not be translated, and little has been written about it, from what I am gathering it is readily apparent that the brainwashing of the children of Ukraine is in full swing, with special vitriol directed against Russia, Putin and the anti-coup resistance in eastern Ukraine. Perhaps Mr. Parry or others with resources capable of inquiring into the affect that Kvit’s ministry is having on the education system post-coup.

The newest tactic to discredit websites, articles, and videos critical of U.S. actions is to post comments with links to “Holocaust denial” material.

Such comments appear as conspicuous non-sequitors that seek to disrupt and divert the discussion.

The “Holocaust denial” comment tactic has been frequently used by Hasbara trolls posting comments on videos, articles, and sites that are critical of Israel.

The “Holocaust denial” comment tactic now is increasingly used to disrupt, divert and discredit journalism about the neo-Nazi presence in Ukraine.

Robert Parry and the team of contributing writers at Consortium News offer superb independent journalism, well-reasoned critical analyses, and valuable historical perspective on national and international events. All these contributors deserve our support.

There indeed are legitimate historical controversies in the study of the Holocaust.

However, the statement that “some say that a holocaust denier is anyone who has studied the holocaust” is a “Holocaust denial” slogan.

That slogan’s appearance in the comments for this article on “Ukraine’s Neo-Nazis” speaks for itself.

Legitimate Russian concerns about neo-Nazi militants and atrocities committed by Ukrainian government forces in the Donbass region are woven with historical irony.

Westerners tend to forget the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviets and Nazi Germany on 23 August 1939, a non-aggression pact containing a secret protocol dividing Northern and Eastern Europe into German and Soviet spheres of influence.

The Soviet invasion of Poland from the east started without a formal declaration of war on 17 September 1939, sixteen days after Nazi Germany invaded Poland from the west.

Of the 13.5 million civilians living in the territories newly annexed by the Soviets, Poles were the largest single ethnic group; but Belarusians and Ukrainians together made up over 50% of the population.

The Katyn massacre (Polish: zbrodnia katyÅ„ska, mord katyÅ„ski, “KatyÅ„ crime”; Russian: Катынский расстрел Katynskij ra’sstrel, “Katyn shooting”), was a series of mass executions of Polish nationals carried out by the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD), the Soviet secret police, in April and May 1940.

Originally the term “Katyn massacre”, also known as the Katyn Forest massacre, referred to the massacre at Katyn Forest, which was discovered first and was the largest execution of this type.

The massacre was prompted by NKVD chief Lavrentiy Beria’s proposal to execute all captive members of the Polish Officer Corps, approved by the Soviet Politburo, including its leader, Joseph Stalin.

The number of victims is estimated at about 22,000. The victims were murdered in the Katyn Forest in Russia, the Kalinin and Kharkiv prisons, and elsewhere.

Of the total killed, about 8,000 were officers taken prisoner during the 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland, another 6,000 were police officers, and the rest were arrested Polish intelligentsia the Soviets deemed to be “intelligence agents, gendarmes, landowners, saboteurs, factory owners, lawyers, officials and priests”.

The government of Nazi Germany announced the discovery of mass graves in the Katyn Forest in 1943. When the London-based Polish government-in-exile asked for an investigation by the International Red Cross, Stalin immediately severed diplomatic relations with it.

The Soviet Union claimed the victims had been murdered by the Nazis in 1941, and continued to deny responsibility for the massacres until 1990, when it officially acknowledged and condemned the perpetration of the killings by the NKVD, as well as the subsequent cover-up by the Soviet government.

An investigation conducted by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Soviet Union (1990–1991) and the Russian Federation (1991–2004) confirmed Soviet responsibility for the massacres, but refused to classify this action as a war crime or an act of genocide.

In November 2010, the Russian State Duma approved a declaration blaming Stalin and other Soviet officials for having personally ordered the massacre.

Russia and Poland remained divided on the legal description of the Katyn crime. The Poles considered it a case of genocide and demanded further investigations, as well as complete disclosure of Soviet documents.

I can’t vouch for either the site or the author here. What struck me about the story is that this is the sort of thing I can easily imagine the Ukraine Nazis doing.

Most of the massacred civilians were women, some were found with body organs removed. According to experts the internal organs of young women are highly valuable on the black market because women generally do not perform activities as hazardous as men and so their organs are more suitable for transplantation.

Near Eastern Outlook is an alternative news site maintained by Tony Cartalucci, an independent American geopolitical analyst based in Thailand.

Konrad Stachnio, described as an independent Poland based journalist,
currently has five articles published on the Near Eastern Outlook site.

It is factually accurate that unmarked graves were discovered by Donetsk People’s Republic forces on September 23 based on information given to them by local residents, who claimed that the graves had been dug by Ukrainian government forces.

The OSCE confirmed the finding and reported its concerns to the European Union.

The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine reported that “Two sites are located near an area known as coal mine Komunar, in the outskirts of Nyzhna Krynka village (35km north-east of Donetsk). The SMM had first visited these two sites on 23 September (see Daily Report 24 September). The third site is located at the entrance of Nyzhna Krynka.” http://www.osce.org/ukraine-smm/124547

Vladimir Markin, official spokesman for the Russian Investigative Committee, has stated that the civilians were killed by “militants of the Right Sector and the National Guard, who carry out criminal orders of the military and political leadership of Ukraine.”

I haven’t seen independent confirmation that these were “mass” graves, that most of the victims were women, that body organs were removed, etc.

Of course, such atrocities are far from implausible, given the utterly revolting “Salvador Option” counter-insurgency conduct of other U.S.-sponsored post-coup regimes (for example, the Iraqi Interior Ministry after the fall of Saddam).

In any event, the main thesis of the article is solid:

History repeats itself. However, I think that truth lies in the opposite statement. I think that people like to repeat history. And again as in Orwell’s 1984, ‘ignorance is strength’. An example of this is the Ukraine where private non-retrofitted battalions of volunteers who are answerable to no one are fighting under Nazi symbols, and no one seems to notice no wrong, and even when they do, they label those Nazis ‘romantics’. In his official speech when he invaded Poland, Hitler spoke about German ‘peacekeeping’ troops going to Poland. When I hear ‘peacekeepers’ I associate this only with the NATO. So now we have to deal with the forces of ’pro-democratic’ counter-terrorism etc. that use the same ideology of genocide as did Himmler, Hitler and the SS. The deceased right-wing leader Alexander Muzichko clearly stated his life credo: fight the communists, Jews and Russians till death.

The main cause of the delegitimization of power in eastern and southern Ukraine was the announcement of the liquidation of linguistic equality for non- Ukrainian speaking minorities. It is in these areas where the Russian-speaking population constitutes the majority. As for the Crimean referendum to join the Russian Federation, it was just a mere reaction to the threats that the Yatsenyuk government had created for the citizens of Crimea. Who needs more similarities with the policies of Hitler in Germany before 1939?

“Adolf Hitler: The Greatest Story Never Told” seems to be a 6-hour documentary about an Hitler everybody misunderstands. Here is a typical blurb:

Since the mid-20th century, the world has only ever heard one side of an incredible story. The story of a boy from an ordinary family whose ambition it was to become an artist, but who instead became a drifter. His destiny however was not to drift into the awaiting oblivion, but to rise to the greatest heights of power, eventually to become one of the most influential men who ever lived. Now for the first time, here is a documented account of a story many believe to be…The Greatest Story NEVER Told!

That video was never shown in the theaters. It isn’t sold on Amazon. But somebody saw fit to spend the money to create it, and to start distribution though ‘underground’ methods.

    xxxx://thegreateststorynevertold.tv/members/packages/

That’s an Alex Jones page. Join up, and he’ll send you the DVDs. Jones is one of many others. In my very brief search I ran into names familiar to me: Deanna Spingola – the screechy airhead linked to by a recent essayist. James Bacque. David Irving.

Somebody with money wants to rehabilitate Adolf Hitler. And guess what? The project is succeeding.

There is a large and growing cadre of ‘doubters’, and a subset of them are becoming True Believers. With the availability of the internet to communicate and coordinate, these True Believers are coming together. The Ukraine is merely an early example. Some of the True Believers will be willing to die for their beliefs. Just as did the original German True Believers. But they’re much more willing to kill the scum who are the root of the evils they perceive.

There is a current counterpart with ISIS. Young Muslim men around the world were ‘radicalized’ by the stuff they’ve been taught. When it was time for them to be ‘activated’, there were and are entire armies of them. Fanatics willing to die, and again, to kill anybody who crosses them.

Probably Saudi Arabia is paying for the ISIS schools around the world. I suspect the billionaires funding the “libertarian” movement have decided they might someday need an armed wing, and are quietly paying for the ‘Hitler wasn’t really such a bad guy’ BS.

Other troubling examples: I’ve heard of Christian sects who are attempting to produce Soldiers For Jesus by breeding just as many kids as they can possibly have. I’ve read that a recent Pope bragged about how Opus Dei was his private militia. When an abortion doctor needs to be ‘whacked’, here are two groups (among many others) with the potential to have the right triggerman available.

Fanatical militias seem to be a growing trend, and one which isn’t a good sign for the future.

What’s rehabilitating Adolf Hitler are the actions of modern imitators(US and Israel) and the realization that the same forces he railed against, are behind our own modern dilemma of disaster .And Holocaust reality, which has been delineated by serial liars since 45,is most definitely different from the narrative spewed. And I aint no NeoNazi.

what it “signals for Russia,” is a Nazi threat openly backed by the European Union, NATO, and the United States, lurking once again along its borders just as it did in the 1930’s and in immediate need of being addressed. This threat goes unnoticed to most among Western audiences primarily because of dishonest reporting from papers like the Washington Post as well as the West’s continuous campaign to defame and undermine Russian media who has apparently been accurately reporting the growing Nazi threat in Ukraine for some time.
    ….

As usual, while the Western press invents an impressive cast of villains for Western regimes to intervene against, it is their own proxies who often pose the greatest threat to global peace and stability. Nazis ravaging not only the West’s enemies in eastern Ukraine, but now threatening their own proxy regime in Kiev is just one of many examples.

The Ukrainian nationalist use of the Nazi Wolfsangel symbol and their lauding of the SS Galicia division point to the ethno-racist shadow of western Ukrainian society.

German television presents a less ‘romantic’ and more historically accurate image of cooperation between the Nazis and Ukrainians during World War II.

This short scene from the German 2013 TV miniseries Generation War (German: Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter, literally “Our mothers, our fathers”) shows an SS round up of Jewish civilians with the help of Ukrainian auxiliaries (note the blue and yellow armband)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE5AERj_7Zs
[CAUTION: graphic violence. Viewer discretion advised.]

    Mobile Killing Operations in Ukraine

Total civilian losses during the war and Nazi occupation in Ukraine are estimated at four million, including up to a million Jews who were murdered by the SS Einsatzgruppen (German for “task forces”) death squads.

Einsatzgruppe C was assigned to north and central Ukraine, and Einsatzgruppe D to Moldavia, south Ukraine, the Crimea. The main assignment of the Einsatzgruppen was to kill civilians. Jews were regarded as partisans to be shot. Initially the targets were adult Jewish men, but by August the net had been widened to include women, children, and the elderly—the entire Jewish population.

    Ukrainian Support for Genocide

Local Ukrainian officials and the Ukrainian Auxiliary Police helped the Einsatzgruppen quickly identify, round up and massacre Jewish civilians. Most Ukrainian Jews were killed by fellow Ukrainians commanded by German officers rather than by Germans. The Germans could not have killed so many Jews so quickly without local help.

As word of the massacres in western Ukraine got out, many Jews fled. 70 to 90 percent of the Jews fled to eastern Ukraine and Russia. The further east the Einsatzgruppen travelled, the less likely the residents were to be prompted into killing their Jewish neighbours.

German historian Dieter Pohl says that around 100,000 Ukrainians joined police units that provided key assistance to the Nazis. Many others staffed the local bureaucracies or lent a helping hand during mass shootings of Jews. According to some historians, the majority of Auxiliary Police came from the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists-B. Ukrainians were also among the guards who manned the Nazi death camps.

    The Massacre at Babi Yar

On 29 and 30 September 1941, the largest mass shooting perpetrated by the Einsatzgruppen took place at Babi Yar, a ravine northwest of Kiev. The city had fallen to the Germans on 19 September. The perpetrators included a company of Waffen-SS troops from the 2nd SS division Das Reich (famous for its Wolfsangel symbol), and some Ukrainian auxiliary police.

The Jews of Kiev were told to report to a certain street corner on 29 September; anyone who disobeyed would be shot. Since word of massacres in other areas had not yet reached Kiev and the assembly point was near the train station, they assumed they were being deported. People showed up at the rendezvous point in large numbers, laden with possessions and food for the journey.

After being marched two miles north-west of the city centre, the victims encountered a barbed wire barrier and numerous Ukrainian police and German troops. Thirty or forty people at a time were told to leave their possessions and were escorted through a narrow passageway lined with soldiers brandishing clubs. Anyone who tried to escape was beaten.

Soon the victims reached an open area, where they were forced to strip, and then were herded down into the ravine. People were forced to lie down in rows on top of the bodies of other victims, and they were shot in the back of the head or the neck by members of the execution squads. The murders continued for two days, claiming a total of 33,771 victims. It was the largest single massacre in the history of the Holocaust in Europe.

    Ghettos and death camps

In Dnepropetrovsk in February 1942, Einsatzgruppe D reduced the city’s Jewish population from 30,000 to 702 over the course of four days. The German Order Police and local collaborators provided the extra manpower needed to perform all the shootings. The ratio of Order Police to auxiliaries was 1 to 10 in both Ukraine and Belarus. In rural areas the proportion was 1 to 20.

As the Nazis recognized that the total elimination of Jewry would have a negative impact on the economy and the food supply, they began to round their victims up into concentration camps and ghettos and rural districts were for the most part rendered Judenfrei (free of Jews). Jewish councils were set up in major cities and forced labour gangs were established to make use of the Jews as slave labour until they were totally eliminated, a goal that was postponed until 1942.

The Trawniki concentration camp about 25 miles southeast of Lublin in occupied Poland served as an SS training facility for Ukrainian (as well as Latvian and Lithuanian) auxiliary police. In 1942, it became the forced-labor camp for thousands of Jews within the KL Lublin system of subcamps as well.

    “On-the-spot dirty work”

Trawniki men (German: Trawnikimänner) were deployed from Trawniki to all major killing sites of the “Final Solution” – it was their primary purpose of training. As guards, they took an active role in the extermination of Jews at Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka II death camps. They conducted large-scale massacres in Warsaw (three times), Częstochowa, Lublin, Lvov, Radom, Kraków, Białystok (twice), Majdanek as well as Auschwitz, not to mention Trawniki itself. During training, many have executed Jews imprisoned right across the double-row barbed-wire fence. All of them were involved in shooting and beating Jews.

Dispatched to the worst of the “on-the-spot dirty work” at the Jewish ghettos in occupied eastern Poland, Trawnikis used to arrive in squads numbering around 50 at the killing site, and start by sitting down to a sandwich and bottles of vodka from their knapsacks behaving like guests, while the Germans dealt with unruly crowds of thousands of ghetto inhabitants: as in Międzyrzec, Łuków, Radzyń, Parczew, Końskowola, Komarówka and all other locations. Trawnikis were seen as indispensable. In Łomazy, the Germans were “overjoyed” to see them coming after the messy Józefów massacre. The killing in Międzyrzec was conducted by a Trawniki unit of about 350 to 400 men, the same as in Parczew.

In 2011, the The Simon Wiesenthal Center reported that “Ukraine has, to the best of our knowledge, never conducted a single investigation of a local Nazi war criminal, let alone prosecuted a Holocaust perpetrator.”

Nazi atrocities in Ukraine, Ukrainian collaboration with the Nazis, and Ukrainian atrocities against the Jewish and Polish populations are matters of historical fact.

These facts are well known to by the German public and openly acknowledged in German mainstream media (my point in citing the German TV drama).

As you correctly point out, H, it is also a matter of historical fact that fraudulent propagandist claims of “six million” Jewish deaths had been made repeatedly by Jewish agencies prior to World War II.

However, there is no denying the fact that millions of Jews were persecuted and killed by the Nazi regime and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. There also is no denying that numerous parties have exploited “the Holocaust” to advance their own financial and territorial interests.

A Wolfsangel is a wolf-hunting device, used in a similar way as a fishing hook. It is attached on a chain which is anchored to a tree or similar stout object, and a bait is put on the hook. When the wolf eats the bait, it swallows the hook. The chain prevents the wolf from escaping, and it can be killed at will.

The Wolfsangel (wolf-hook) symbol is a form of Hakenkreuz (angled cross) like the Nazi swastika.

During the Nazi era, the Wolfsangel was used by:

    • the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich (1939-1945)
    • the 4th SS Polizei Panzergrenadier Division (1939-1945)
    • the 34th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division Landstorm Nederland (1943–1945)
    • the National Socialist movement in the Netherlands (1931–1945)
    • the Sturmabteilung “Feldherrnhalle” Wachstandart Kampfrunen – Storm Battalion “Warlord’s Hall” Guard Regiment Assault Unit – created after the demise of Ernst Röhm in the “Night of the Long Knives” (1934-1945)
    • the NS-Volkswohlfahrt – National Socialist People’s Welfare organization (1933-1945)
    • the Werwolf plan of resistance against allied occupation was intended to use this symbol (1944-1945)

Under German Strafgesetzbuch (Criminal Code) § 86a, graphic symbolism including the Nazi Wolfsangel, swastika, SS-runes, the Sun Cross and the “White Power” Celtic Cross, are banned as “symbols of unconstitutional organizations.”

    SS Das Reich Division

By far the most notable Nazi use of the Wolfsangel symbol was by the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich, an elite German division fighting primarily on the Eastern Front during World War II.

During Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, Das Reich fought in the battles of the Dnieper River crossings, Smolensk, Kiev and Vyasma.

On 29 and 30 September 1941, a special team of SS troops supported by other German units and local collaborators murdered 33,771 Jewish civilians after taking them to Babi Yar, a ravine in the Ukrainian capital. It was the largest single massacre in the history of the Holocaust in Europe.

Das Reich was in the spearhead of the failed attempt to capture Moscow in December 1941. In 1942, after a period of very bloody losses for the division, Das Reich was pulled out of the fighting and sent to France to refit.

Early in 1943, after the catastrophic defeat of German forces at Stalingrad, Das Reich helped recapture Kharkov. During July and August, the division fought in the titanic battle of Kursk. Along with the 3rd SS division Totenkopf, Das Reich launched a counterattack against two Soviet tank armies, which had achieved a significant breakthrough. During the following battles the two SS divisions destroyed much of the Soviet armor, up to 800 tanks.

After Kursk, most of the Das Reich division was transferred to the West to refit, and while doing so, took part in anti-partisan operations. In June 1944, after the Allied D-Day invasion, Das Reich committed atrocities at Tulle and Oradour-sur-Glane in France.

    SS Galicia Division

In 1943, after the failure at Stalingrad, the Germans belatedly recruited manpower from the former Soviet states they still occupied.

Thousands of Ukranians volunteered to join the 14th Waffen-Grenadier Division of the SS, Halychyna (Galicia) No. 1. A special commando unit from the Galicia Division was alleged to have committed various atrocities, including killing 1,500 civilians in L’viv and burning the settlement of Oles’ko, causing the deaths of 300 inhabitants.

The Galicia Division was encircled and routed by Soviet forces in the summer of 1944. It was reformed and transferred to Slovakia for anti-partisan duties. In March 1945, the Germans authorized the formation of a Ukrainian National Army to which the division was attached.

    Ukrainian Neo-Nazis

After World War II, the Wolfsangel symbol has been used by several neo-Nazi organizations, including the Ukrainian Svoboda party (formerly known as the Social-National Party of Ukraine in a deliberate inversion of National-Socialism).

Svoboda and Pravyy Sektor armed neo-Nazi militants exploited the largely peaceful Maidan anti-government protests, and violently seized power in Kiev. Neo-Nazis leaders were given key positions in the post-coup government.

The Wolfangel banner is flying over Ukraine thanks to the US/NATO sponsors who helped instigate the February coup in Kiev, and continue to supply aid an political cover to the neo-Nazi forces.

Not only the notorious Azov and Aidar battalions, but regular Ukrainian Army and National Guard forces display the Wolfsangel and other Nazi symbols.

The Wolfsangel symbol and the SS runes recall the most violent and bloody battles against Red Army forces variously demonized in Nazi propaganda as “Jewish Bolshevik subhumans”, the “Mongol hordes”, the “Asiatic flood” and the “red beast”.

The post-coup regime in Kiev invoked the same vicious Nazi propaganda lines in its recent “anti-terrorist operation” in eastern Ukraine.

    Ladies and gentlemen,

just to be a little bit more accurate :

    – The “Wolfsangel” was the symbol of the “2. SS-Panzer-Division Das Reich”, a German Waffen-SS division. I have no clue why the Ukrainian Nazis (I call them Nazis, not neo-Nazis) chosed this very division’s symbol amongst many others.

    – What you call the “Galician SS” was actually the “14. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (galizische Nr. 1)”. This full-Ukrainian Waffen-SS division was formed in 1943 and fought on the Eastern front until the end of the war.
That division, often called “Galicia Division”, is much honored by Svoboda and Praviy Sektor, whereas the “Das Reich” is not – except though its “Wolfsangel” symbol.

    All the best

An estimated 3.3 million Soviet POWs died in Nazi custody, out of 5.7 million. This figure represents a total of 57% of all Soviet POWs and may be contrasted with only 8,300 out of 231,000 British and U.S. prisoners, or 3.6%. Some estimates range as high as 5 million dead, including those killed immediately after surrendering (an indeterminate, although certainly very large number). About 5% of the Soviet prisoners who died were of Jewish ethnicity.

In the summer and fall/autumn of 1941 during the German invasion, vast numbers of Soviet prisoners were captured in about 11 different encirclements (so-called cauldrons). Due to the rapid advance and an expected quick victory, the Germans did not want to ship these prisoners back to Germany. Under the administration of the Wehrmacht the prisoners were processed, guarded, force marched, or transported in open rail cars. The treatment of prisoners was brutal. In the most extreme case, a forced march of prisoners from Gzhatsk to Smolensk in December 1941 may have resulted in the deaths of up to 400,000 men.

The most deaths took place between June 1941 and January 1942, when the Germans killed an estimated 2.8 million Soviet POWs primarily through starvation, exposure, and summary execution, in what has been called, along with the Rwandan Genocide, an instance of “the most concentrated mass killing in human history, eclipsing the most exterminatory months of the Jewish Holocaust”.

By September 1941, the mortality rate among Soviet POWs was in the order of 1% per day. By the winter of 1941, starvation and disease resulted in mass death. For the Germans, Soviet POWs were expendable and, unlike Western POWs, were considered to be subhuman.

        October 17, 2014 at 11:08

Putin’s big mistake is that he refuses to speak English like Poroshenko did before Congress or even German. Putin refuses to understand the PR strategy of constant repetition in sound bytes (so things get through to the masses). Right now in Milan he could make a sound byte “Get rid of the Nazis and we will give you gas”. He doesn’t know how to do that. Instead he will make an intellectual speech that will win over intellectuals everywhere…all 300 of them. If he chose the sound byte route, he could win over Joe Six Pack in the US.

By elevating the Nazi theme as the main one after such a conference, nobody in the west can once again say “Oh, that’s just a stupid propaganda meme of theirs”.

Especially if he repeats it again and again “Get rid of those Nazi groups or no gas”. He has to make sure that everyone gets that the Nazis are really the main issue for the Russians and not just an excuse for propaganda.

Russians have never understood PR for the western masses. Most intelligent Americans do understand the Ukraine crisis, but the masses of unintelligent ones certainly do not because the Russians won’t even spring for a few billion dollars worth of ads. It’s like the Russians don’t believe it would make a splash if they ran an ad campaign condemning US State Dept collusion with Nazis. They would correctly guess that the campaign would be attacked as lies and propaganda, but cracks in that argument would appear if the Russians continued on to unapologetically press home all facts, etc, in bite sized sound bytes.

Every time Lavrov speaks, I wince.

This is because he is so eminently reasonable with his laconic, nuanced speech.

But I know that most people are not smart enough to appreciate that type of slow, reasoned speech.

It drives me up the wall that he doesn’t seem to understand that.

To be historically truthful and give credit where credit is due, and to honor the historical pillars of Europe United in One Nation Of States, we need to recognize that there was a European Union before the European Union we now know. That Union was the Dream of Keiser Wilhelm, who ‘recognized’ a need for a Continental European colony-empire administered by Germany to counterbalance the British Empire, specifically after the Boer War, a British war of aggression against continental European colonists in Africa. The Boer War British aggression was the real initial beginning for the First World War. It is what set Keiser Wilhelm off.
Adolf Hitler took up the cause, and where the Keiser had failed, Hitler succeeded: Nazi Europe was a United Europe. It was united by military, instead of economic conquest, but conquest is conquest.
And so, boys and girls, it is very, very appropriate that today, as the New United Europe seeks to expand its borders to compass more of the Old United Europe, the spiritual descendants of the Old United Europe should be honored, and the part they are playing in attempting to help bring the New to become as the Old be recognized.
Of course the Russians oppose these Defenders of EU expansion, and some Ukrainians do, too. But the EU should embrace them, since they are really their children, their predecessor European Union’s grandchildren.
Now, does it all make sense?

What’s really amazing about all of this is that it implies a complete lack of basic World War Two history on the part of the State Department and the Executive branch. AND, it suggests complete ignorance of the postwar elements that contributed to the establishment of the security services of the United States. Perhaps that is not impossible for someone who grew up in Indonesia and lacked exposure to American cultural history and values. But it is almost unthinkable that a bunch of Jewish Neocons, whom one would reasonably expect to know something about the Holocaust, could also be so shamelessly ignorant.

Kerry tried to blur reality by stating that these Ukrainian Nationalists “fought against the Nazis and the Soviets” during the war. There is a small but insignificant element of truth to that statement. Ukrainian nationalists began ethnically cleansing Jews while seeking independence, but regarded Germany as an occupier. Viewing Bolshevism, which they regarded as a “Jewish” ideology as the greater threat, they quickly adopted an alliance with their cultural brethren, the Nazis. At that point, they began ethnically cleansing both Jews AND Poles. Neocons seem to have forgotten the controversy over John Demianiuk, the Ukrainian Nazi who served as a death camp guard at Sobibor. American Jewish organizations campaigned diligently to insure his deportation to stand trial as a war criminal.

The Nazi intelligence service headed by General Reihard Gehlen was absorbed into the OSS, precursor to the CIA. (Yes, folks, that actually is TRUE.) Elements of Ukrainian Nazi SS units headed by Stepan Bandera of the OUN-B were also incorporated, and Bandera himself was employed by the American CIA front operation, “Radio Free Europe”.

Dave Emory of spitfirelist.com is regarded by many as an eccentric. He adheres to interpretations of current events influenced by putative links to a surviving Nazi “Underground Reich” with tentacles in American deep state politics and the intelligence community. While these observations may seem novel in their perspective, they are grounded in undeniable historical FACTS. As Emory points out, Poroshenko has reconstituted the Yuschenko team including Ukrainian Nazi leader Jaroslav Stetsko’s surviving personal secretary, Roman Svarych. Svarych served as – GET THIS – Minister of “Justice” under Yuschenko and both corrupt regimes led by Julia Tymoshenko. Meet the new Nazis, same as the old Nazis.

Given that the Dunham family had ties to the U.S. intelligence community, ignorance of these realities seem to represent either a willfully fabricated pretense or abject ignorance of historical facts. The latter seems unlikely. It’s about time Americans started asking, “Who the hell’s in charge”? As the New York Times and American corporate media continue to operate in Warren Report mode, the answer to that question is getting difficult to avoid. If Kerry now tries to claim that these Ukrainian Nazis are actually subversives working for Putin to destabilize the “democratic” Poroshenko junta, you’ll be able say, “I heard it here first”. At this point, nothing would surprise me.

Nationalist riot threatens parliamentary elections in Ukraine (VIDEO)
    http://en.itar-tass.com/world/754563

A disrupted Ukrainian parliamentary session suggests high risks for early parliamentary elections on October 26, the country’s Central Elections Commission (CEC) chief said in an official statement.

Lawmakers were forced to abandon work on Tuesday due to disorder from radical nationalists near the parliament building. Svoboda party activists were protesting over parliament’s refusal to consider a bill declaring the nationalist Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UIA) WWII military organization fighting for Ukraine’s independence.

Disorder grew into riots as radicals sought to storm the parliament building. Smoke candles, stun grenades and other charges were hurled at the police. Dispersing lawmaker numbers shrunk to below the required quorum level.

Abandonment prevented debate over military action in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics and law on the parliamentary polls. Voting procedures for servicemen in those districts and repeat polls where voting was found invalid failed to make the session.

“This situation jeopardises the election commission’s ensuring and protecting suffrage for Ukrainian citizens living or staying temporarily in Donetsk and Luhansk republics,” CEC head Mikhail Okhendovsky said.

“This poses major risks for preparing and holding early polls under the country’s constitution, domestic laws and universally recognised international standards of free and fair elections,” he added, while Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov pledged to convene another extraordinary plenary meeting if called for.

According to Russian Foreign Ministry’s commissioner for human rights, democracy and the rule of law, Konstantin Dolgov, “International experts and human rights activists note a tendency towards legalization of ultra-right parties and a general growth in Europe of xenophobia and intolerance to national minorities with indulgence of law enforcement agencies.”

“A policy towards building ‘ethnically clean’ Ukrainian state has never been disguised by Ukrainian ultra-radicals and neo-Nazis who first made up the driving force of Maidan, and then of Kiev’s punitive operation against population of the country’s southeast,” Dolgov said at a regional conference with ethnic Russians of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia in September.

“We can find a host of concrete facts and confirmation to that, including in two editions of the White Book on [human rights violations in] Ukraine, prepared by the Russian Foreign Ministry,” he said.

Dolgov also cited Nils Muiznieks, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, as saying many European leaders were failing to fight against a growing threat of neo-Nazism and xenophobia.

Russia has repeatedly highlighted the issue in the European parliament, to the EU commissioner for human rights and other executive officers of the European Commission, he said.

It is a sad truth and I do not know how to open people’s eyes. I constantly post links to Perry’s articles on Facebook, but nobody seems to care.

Thank you Consortium News for spreading true news. I’m getting sick of the mainstream news’ propaganda here in the west. It’s so obvious what’s happening, once you inform yourself a little.
I can only hope it won’t come to a WWIII.

I’m of the mindset WWIII has been ongoing for decades. With advent of the War on Drugs and Terrorism it is becoming less covert and more overt.
